    I think Jonathan Porterfield must secretly be a benevolent multi-millionaire...?
    I've watched / heard him numerous times over the last 12 months and it always strikes me as amazing that (at least, prior to Covid) he would travel ALL over the UK buying used EVs, then drive them to his client and yet only charge a nominal £300 for his services...!
    Truly amazing...
    What a gent :-)

      Old habits die hard with most of them. It’s so ingrained they don’t even realise they’re doing it. I remember looking over the hill for a service on my wife’s car a few years ago. She was all chuffed because there was a ‘goodie bag’ when she collected it. The bag contained a litre of oil & a few other bits that you’d buy for a tenner. They’d charged £30. They were quite shocked the following morning when I rocked up & demanded to know why they had supplied stuff we hadn’t ordered. The service manager got a bit snotty until I asked him if he’d prefer to deal with trading standards. Big dealerships are all about milking the last penny from you. 😬

    What I learnt going to a car auction once was that some dealers buy cars even at very high prices because more money can be made selling the finance rather than the profit on the car. This may have changed now as this was about 8 or so years ago but still worth thinking about.

    I have "Book-Marked" this, so if anybody asks about second hand EVs I can send them the link!
    On second hand values: We ordered one of the first round of 'Founders' cars for the Kia eNero. There was a waiting list of about 9 months. We collected ours, then they added £3k to the price! We could have run ours for a year, then sold it for the price that we paid new, I have no doubt. But we are keeping it for the long term, as it does what we need it to, at a lifetime average of 5 miles per kWh so far. Charged mainly on solar. . . . . Why change?

    Your comment about replacing battery cells in the Renault Zoe is being addressed. We are seeing quite a few needing to be replaced and are currently developing a programme to support the brand. We are also addressing the subject of swapping from battery lease to complete ownership. EOL (End of Life) seems to be the largest issue when dealing with this area. We are seeing very positive responses in being able to handle this awkward subject.

    I buy used Premium EV's for a main dealer group and Tesla's are currently making very high prices in auction. Spec does make a difference of course, alloy wheel size, number of seats, enhanced autopilot etc. I would suggest not waiting till the end of the month for a sort after electric cars as they have probably got none in stock and the financial kickbacks only take effect for dealers if the cars are delivered in the month mainly end of quarter. Jonathan is a great guy and his channel is very informative. I personally would buy a car in manufacturers warranty or you might find yourself with a big repair bill or selling batteries and motors to the EV conversion enthusiasts....Aka the Chargeheads. #ChargeheadsUK

    Well played to Jonathan. A man of good service to his customers.
    Ok, I leased. Simply because it was less impacting on my wallet than a used EV was. I could either realistically buy a 24-30KWh Leaf or lease a VW ID.3. The former would have made a big dent in my savings, the latter hardly makes a day to day difference, because I can manage it over time. Also, in 3 years, I can appraise the whole scenario again, should I wish to purchase outright.
    Have to say that I was finally pushed over the edge by FC's previous excellent video on leasing an EV. 😋

    Glad to see you addressing the cheaper end of the market..I'm one of those people for whom an electric car would be ideal..50 mile round trip commute 3 or 4 times a week..my Honda Jazz continues to impress running like it was a 2 yr old car not a 18 yr old and showing 140k miles. Not let me down once in the 4 years of ownership..but I'd be looking to replace it with a 3 to 5k car and I can't see anything in the EV sector that is likely to match the Honda for practicality , space and value so I'll probably buy another..which is a shame because I would love to join the EVolution of the species!! See what I did there!! 😂. First EV manufacturer to give Joe public a 70 mph 150 mile range basic electric vehicle for say 7.5k will have more orders than they can handle and I may just be in the queue.windy windows, radio, 2 door 2+2 hatch the size of a Fiat 500.low tech low cost easy charging from 3 pin socket...sold to the man with the Honda!!

    Usually cars like the Leaf are disposed of when the battery had degraded; so typically you need to replace the battery pack in order to restore range to usable; Europe being closer together may be different than the USA. So you end up putting about $5000 into a $5000 car and end up with a pretty short range, small EV; adequate for some and 1/5th the price of a Tesla.

    The plugging-in/charging routine varies massively between cars/batteries.....eg it’s fine/recommended by the manufacturer to keep a BMW i3 plugged in... to help keep the 12volt ancillary battery topped up... the top buffer on the main/high voltage battery is set to allow the thing to be always on charge. Very different with a Tesla....with these owners are advised to usually charge to 80/85%.. owners need to set their own top limit as the BMS (battery management system) will allow the battery to fully charge to a ‘real’ 100 %..... horses for courses!

    There's a garage just a few units down from where I work where all the mechanics are qualified to service/repair electric vehicle drivetrains (the last one in a few weeks ago wasn't a pure EV, but a nice black NSX hybrid), which is also an important point to sort out as it's not possible to just go anywhere, especially if the 'pre-loved' EV is out of warranty!

    If only I had seen this before I bought a 30kwh Leaf in December, it had a duff cell in the middle of the pack and had to sell at a loss to we buy any car, so beware and plug in leaf spy before you buy second hand, if Jonathan wants to keep clear of it when it pops up on auction I'll pass on the registration. My MG is a much better car.

      @@Koda14 The problem being it was still showing 11 out of 12 bars on the battery health so I would have a fight on my hands to get Nissan to agree that the pack was faulty, but the biggest fault was that the previous owner hadn't completed the service which was due in early 2020, I contacted Nissan's and they weren't helpful nor able to guarantee that the vehicle would have maintained it's warranty, so I contacted Cleevey's and Matt was very helpful, he told me after looking at the screenshots of leafspy I had sent him that it would cost about £700 minimum to remove the pack, charge it back to match the rest of the pack, but it would be no guarantee that this would carry on working or revert to unbalanced later on, yes I could have sold it privately but felt it would be unfair to do so. I therefore cut my losses selling to we buy etc. I've now got an MG ZS EV, and wish I'd gone for that first of all as it's way better even over the mk2 leafs, registration of old car GU17SKO avoid at all costs.

    As he says battery condition on a used ev is 'Russian roulette' and you won't know until after you've paid. Many manufacturers only expose the battery condition data via a main dealer's diagnostic tools. Let's face it evs like all secondhand cars are passed on when they exhibit problems. You're naive if you trust that the battery is ok, capacity diminishes depending upon how its used, and you can't check that, buyer beware.

    • @michaelgoode9555
      @michaelgoode9555 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you buy from a dealer you have legal protection. If you buy an EV most have 7 or 8 years battery warranty so you are not going to get a huge bill.
      And do your homework: no need to buy the first one available whatever the car is.

  • @kjh789az
    @kjh789az 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    EV? Buying 2nd hand? Buy an OBD dongle and stick it in the car you fancy. It will not sugar-coat the truth about the battery condition, including its real capacity now and the degradation since new. Caveat Emptor if you buy online! As this guest seller/dealer frankly says, he doesn't have time or access to do this.

    Auctions nowadays are not as they were a few years ago. BCA now cream off the best lease cars on their return and retail them through their "New Company" called Cinch and we've all seen the ads with the guy who has the big white teeth. Cinch reviews are not of the best reading either. I wouldn't be surprised if Manheim and the other national auction houses do or will start doing the same.
    This means that the quality of the cars at auction now are not as good as they were before Cinch.
    I've bought many cars from auction houses for myself mainly but also for friends and family, Manheim, BCA and Wilsons etc etc and over those many years cars owe me nothing as I've mainly bought for my own use but now cars at auction have a higher risk of problems with repair bills and cost to repair/replace going through the roof.
    Auction buyers beware, John seems to know what he's doing and his profit doesn't seem extortionate.

    There's a fixation especially in Europe that ev's are the way out of climate change and internal combustion engines is are bad this not the case. Internal combustion engines have developed to such a level they are no longer an issue for the climate it's fossil fuels that are the issue efuels now being developed will resolve the emissions issues of ice yes there is a place for ev's but they alone are not the answer. We're always lurching from one thing to another only to find out later it was wrong, it's not one or another it's a combination of things which will resolve the climate issues

    • @michaelgoode9555
      @michaelgoode9555 ปีที่แล้ว

      EV's are not touted as the panacea to climate change at all. There are issues that you allude to but conveniently do not expand upon. Firstly though, urban pollution is massively reduced when you take fossil burners away from densely populated areas. Yes, you are redistributing the pollution but it is more diluted and therefore less toxic to the individual.
      As regards synthetic fuels: what are you going to make them from? We need agricultural land to feed people, not cars.
      Electric can be generated by varying means all over the planet whether it be solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, water storage, etc. and electricity is hugely versatile, accessible and easy to use. Oil needs to be transported, refined and stored for distribution.
      EV's may not be your answer but the bigger picture says that electricity is far cleaner and more practical than fossil fuels.

    Hmm. Sorry, but I didn't hear anything encouraging. 😞 A great time to be an EV dealer, eh? Massive interest... High prices... Competitive market... Not just maintaining their value but climbing... EVs = juicy profits = 2 decent holidays a year... Loadsamoney! A used £65,000 Tesla for £40,000... An equivalent sporty BMW would cost £6,000...
    If that weren't so disgusting it'd be hilarious.
    EVs are definitely not meant for poor people. They're starting to make me quite angry, actually. Like Apple products and Dyson vacuum cleaners: brutal marketing; reassuringly expensive. Aspirational pricing.
    But I don't have to buy a £1,300 iPad - I can buy a £50 tablet from Argos. I don't need to spend £500 on a poxy Dyson; I can get a £30 vacuum from the local DIY shop.
    So where are the cheap EVs? If I can't spend £30,000 on a posh new one, why can't I buy crappy new one for £3,000?
    I like my old bike more and more. It costs me nothing but a bit of physical effort.
    EVs be damned.
