Seeing Vhagar and Arrax take shots at each other (with Vhagar killing Arrax) while Aemond and Luke failed to control them REALLY hammers the point home in regards to the line "Dragons aren't slaves". In that episode, we also see how the dragons connect to their riders. We see Rhaenyra's pain during her miscarriage in her dragon, and when Daemon confronts the kingsguard we see anger through his. I think Luke's and Aemond's underlying hatred of each other also fed into what happened between Rhagar and Arrax. Although as humans, they understood what killing each other would mean to the beginning of war and they refrained from it, whereas the dragons being weapons of war, embraced the idea and acted on it.

i mean it could be the subtext for sure, but alicent put viserys' crown to rest on his body and gave aegon the conqueror' crown because this is what viserys told her he saw in his dream in episode 3 - that he had a dream about his son being coronated with the conqueror's crown.
a lot of people seem to forget that and not understand why she interpreted his last words to her as her son being king because she didn't know about the prince that was promised prophecy. but rewatching episode 3 and what he told her on his deathbed in episode 8 really helps understanding she thought he was talking about the dream he told her about in episode 3, 20 years ago (which is why i think she looked a bit confused herself for a second because it's been so long. but when he says "don't you remember? "it's you" or something like that... i mean i would misinterpret him too lol)

Because of the sudden time focused on Luke in the last episode, it was obvious that something was gonna happen to him. I didn't feel that much when he died because we didn't know him better. @SoSodawgindahouse I will add, it did make sense for her to go mad. What didn't make sense was the timeline of it. I wondered about her going mad somewhere around season 4/5 ish (it's been a while since I've watched), when things started to get complicated and go wrong for her. I wondered and, in fact, supported the idea of a tragic end for Dany because she went mad. It made sense in a way, daughter of the Mad King and all that. But also because she was introduced as a fragile girl kept down for her whole life. Only when she came into power and embraced it did she start projecting confidence and being more assertive (which would eventually lead her down a darker path that would drive her mad).
But the showrunners never did it so I gave up on the idea. Given that it needed time, a slow-burn if you will, to be executed properly, it got too late in the show to start doing it so I figured we were going to get victorious and heroic Dany, as they had set her up to be in the early seasons. Instead they realized too late that (my opinion) The Tragedy of the Mad Queen was the better story arc and forced the character into that role for the final season.
Had they started laying the ground work around season 6 and paced it up to the end it would have worked but they messed it up by shoehorning the entire arc into the final season. At that point they should've just let her be the hero we all expected her to be because in 7 seasons that's what they gave us.

But if like you said they had planted the seeds more clearly of her loosing her mind earlier, it would be less shocking and would make more sense overall. Your analogy is actually spot on. Dragons are the nukes of this world. Power so great and so terrible that it is not to be trifled with. "Dragons are not slaves" as Viserys said earlier in the season. They are the mightiest force in this world and the mere thought that the Targaryens can control them is hubris in the highest order. Add to that Vhagar is one of the oldest dragons in the world, one of the ones that Aegon the Conqueror and his Sister-Wives rode when they took over the Seven Kingdoms (she's the dragon of Aegon's older sister, Visenya and the only living one left of that time). Arrax is a little teen lashing out, Vhagar is an old and bloodthirsty war veteran who toppled nations. One was too stupid to know better and the other too bloodthirsty to let it go.

I don’t blame Alicent for misinterpreting his words and running with it. Back in episode 3, Viserys expressed something similar to her. About how he dreamt that his son would sit on the Iron Throne and that dream made him question his decision to keep Rhaenyra as heir after Aegon’s birth.

    • @hh-ug4ki
      @hh-ug4ki ปีที่แล้ว +10

yup, in episode 3 he also told her that in his dream his son is being coronated with Aegon The Conqueror's crown- which is exactly what she did and that's why she put Viserys' crown to rest on his body, believing to go according to the dream he told her about.
i liked reading Olivia Cooke's (Alicent) interviews on these moments and Alicent's internal conflict in episodes 8 and 9. she said that a part of Alicent was kind of furious at that moment, right after she finally started letting her guards down, put that paranoia, bitterness and resentment aside and finally made peace with Rhaenyra being heir. I read another interview where she said that Alicent loves Aegon as he is her kid but is disgusted with his behavior and doesn't really really believe he'd be a better ruler than Rhaenyra whom she does miss deep down.
But it's like, Alicent had been taught all her life to put her duty (as a wife/widow, as a hightower, as a daughter and as a mother) above everything else (including herself like she did as a teen conceiving babies for Viserys or her instincts/feelings like when she last chose Rhaenyra over her duty to her dad, which resulted in his expulsion). Anyway I found it really interesting and helpful to understand where a lot of her decisions come from and makes her standing up to her dad refusing to kill Rhaenyra (with him also calling her out for using her duty for Viserys as an excuse for the real reason she doesn't want to kill her) even more impactful.

Vaemond is the perfect illustration of that (which also had Rhaenyra's tacit stamp of approval). From her perspective, marrying Daemon is gaining a powerful ally to her side and eliminating the potential for him ever becoming a third faction in this mess. But from everyone else's perspective ... she just married freakin' Daemon! The very embodiment of a lose canon! The guy that inspired the realm to swear an oath to crown a woman for the first time specifically in order to ensure this particular jerk would not be king! For anyone who’s curious, here’s the translated lyrics to the song Daemon sings to the dragon Vermithor:
    Fire breather
    Winged leader
    But two heads
    To a third sing
    From my voice:
    The fires have spoken
And the price has been paid
    With blood magic
    With words of flame
    With clear eyes
    To bind the three
    To you I sing
    As one we gather
    And with three heads
We shall fly as we were destined
    Beautifully, freely

The "Lament" and "Fate of the Kingdoms" soundtrack is absolutely beautiful. It expresses the urgency of the moment so well. And the thematic richness of the visuals are stunning. The silent sisters, viserys being wrapped up, Alicent in front of the window sil, it all has an ambience of a catholic sadness inside a tragic renaissance painting. tgc's aegon during the coronation looks fresh out of a panel depicting a prince in a middle ages lithography. the sadness in his eyes omg you only see in church winds..this is the aegon we need.

The sword crossing, the tapestry, the bagpipes playing “king’s arrival” from GoT, proud Otto enjoying his life’s work, the veiled & somber Queen kissing the King, the Septons marking his forehead...I was blown away by the details in the coronation. It felt like watching Nicholas II being crowned in an Orthodox ceremony with all the hollow pomp & circumstance of a rotting system. It's what I'd always envisioned from a GoT coronation. Tom Glynn-Carney was terrific in bringing out Aegon's fear, hesitation, pride & euphoria all at once. He’s got a sadness about him you only see in catholic stained glass windows. I'm glad they kept much despised Criston putting the Conqueror's crown on Aegon II's head. The Kingmaker is born! What the show's doing really well is the details, down to splitting the treasury or locking up servants. Usually the passionate debates, the sense of treachery, the heartbreak are glossed over & we only see the regime change as a "fait accompli". This bring to life the mechanism that historically goes behind a coup, which I assume is as emotionally taxing for the people seizing power. That's why I like agonized & conflicted Alicent more than her steadfast source counterpart. It's more flesh & blood. She vacillates but her messianic fear for her children fates her to make a cursed gamble.

Idk Aemond has a right to hold a grudge against Luke. He claimed Vhagar because she was meant to be his. He only said it was a fair trade to calm Alicent down. Aside from the fact that she’s his mother, Alicent is the only person who’s ever stood up for him, whether it was when he was getting bullied by his brother and cousins, or when Luke took his eye.
Not only that, there was never an apology or any remorse shown from Luke’s end. It’s easy for Rhaenyra and co to pretend the incident never happened, but considering Aemond is the one without an eye it’s pretty hard to forget.

I have such a love hate relationship with reaction channels. One thing that bothers me about this show in particular is that y'all spend so much time talking and trying to be entertaining, that you miss dialogue that would fully explain things that seem to confuse you. They straight up said at the beginning of episode 9 that House Baratheon might be an issue, but that he has lots of daughters. So they immediately planned to offer him a wedding proposal. So the odds that Aemond was there was actually really good. They had to get there quickly to win him over, dragonback is the fastest way to travel, and Aemond isn't married. The odds were really good that he was there. I'm not hating or anything. Just that a lot gets missed for the sake of being entertaining instead of just paying attention. Make your money though. 🤷‍♂️

viserys is a well written and acted instance of a horrible father and king, who deceives himself that he is well meaning, but really isn't. he is well meaning only to his daughter, to others, including his children by alicent, alicent herself, and his subjects, he is opposite of well meaning . he is a horrible father, husband and king. foreseeable consequences of his actions prove that clearly.
show did well to ensure vaemond went on saying what he said instead of backing down, even though he knew there wont be a good outcome for him. he for one is not taking injustice of entitled tyrants passively. and this is an instance where making his house black fits rather well. scene is full of various subtextual nuances and allusions.
