Thanks for that! I try really hard to make each new video better than the last. It takes a ton of time but I really enjoy it. I'm looking forward to becoming more comfortable with everything as I keep learning and improving! 👍
If you were looking for deeper drawers, cut out the bottom of a shallow drawer and bolt it to the drawer below. That way you keep the look of the drawer front while getting more capacity.
This seems like a really good idea.... You could fold the bottom down and rivet it to the sidewalls of the lower drawers. That would make use of the upper pair of drawer slides for weight capacity
I have done similar to this, I cut the bottom out of a drawer then put in 1/2 inch plywood "U" shape nearly the height of both drawers and screwed that on the sides. This nicely completely covered up my very messy cut so I dont cut my hand open every time I stick it in there. I couldn't use a square shape because I couldn't open the drawers fully and place it in so I wound up cutting the back off so it's just a U now. Of course this means I lost an inch of drawer width but not a big deal for what I was doing. I also cut the bottom out of the top drawer with an angle grinder before removing the foam base from the second drawer. That was also a mistake.
Very similar to what I started 2 years ago. Job changes put the project on hold. Many of the ideas were the same, height, legs and organizing the top drawers. Nice job!
Holly! Using a router is an awesome idea! So simple, yet I completely over looked that. I put a piece of ply wood down and then the work bench top on top. Next time I get a chance I'm going to copy you.
Something to consider, it does technically weaken the work surface by routing out the bottom. If you're hammering a lot and using the bench for heavy work, there's a chance it can split at the seam. I have other benches for that kind of work, but just as a caution 👍
I used my 3d printer to print boxes exactly to my specs. All are 1 mm thick walls and bottom - for the upper drawers. Thicker below for the larger items. Using these cabinets for nuts & bolts is the smartest way to store and retrieve.
Dude, Yes! This is great. I've been looking at a lot of different shop organizations as I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to lots of little parts that need a home. My intial go to was bin organizers like for bolts but that leaves a lot to be desired especially for keeping things clean, this is awesome.
That's fantastic, so far this has worked out really well for me! It's definitely not as heavy duty as a lista or Stanley, but for my needs so far it's been great
you did an awesome job! well thought out. i would have out wood on top of the tool boxes and then glued the butcher board to the wood so it remained in place that way rather than doing what you did, but it worked out.
Definitely would've been a bit simpler that way, I just liked how they look sitting flush to the boxes. Hopefully they don't split over time, it'll be more annoying for me if I need to replace them later on
i was actually thinking about doing the same thing, and routing out a butcher block for those us general cabinets. I like the 26in but maybe not six of the same.. thats alot of small drawers.
I have binged your entire Datsun build. You have done such an amazing job for not speshalising in that field. Props for the camera work 👌 very easy to watch. What happened tho? I want to see this all painted you smiling!! Or sid the missus found out you borrowed her wheels 😂
I ended up getting an injury shortly after filming and kind've hobbled the bench together over the course of a few months, then our home got flooded early in the year and we've been dealing with rebuilding and repairs... Has certainly not been the last several months I've wanted to have for the channel! I'm glad you've been enjoying the build series so far. I'm getting to the tail end of repairs and have been coming up with ideas and filming small sections for upcoming projects. Excited to get back into it!
You can usually just stick the end of the shop vac hose on the router dust port and the suction will keep it on there pretty well, or electrical tape is your friend.
I'd tried taping it but the plunge kept screwing with it. It came with an adapter but it kept falling apart on me. It got really annoying and just said screw it haha
They used to be. HF changed the design (in 2024) and the new design is not as good as the original. I have several original bases, like you bought, and love them. Not sure what I will buy when I need more.
Miller is an Excellent choice! The "Storage Bin" Idea is Wonderful! As for the router, just get a friend to hold the vacuum close to the work: A Pizza should pay for it.
Your very first sentence in this video is brutally true and I'm really struggling with it. If you fix and DO things all these little bits are essential and often save the day. OK, getting back to the video, thanks!
This brings me back to when we where getting Nine Lives Racing fired up and I was working by myself. Your attitude is spot on. Before you know it you’ll have a full shop packed full of employees.
Starting all this has been the most gratifying uphill battles I've ever had. Everything's been a huge learning curve but it means a lot hearing that I'm doing the right things- thanks for that, really. 👍
New subscriber as well. Love the workbench. I’m not sure what year the Z is but I had a 75 back in high school. I had the racing fenders, bbs wheels, Newman Haas paint scheme and the number 75 on the door. Loved that car. My dad bought it new and I bought it from him in 84.
Hey thanks for subscribing! That's awesome, legendary car 🤘 mines a 77, 100% bucket list car for me. Hopefully get a series 1 someday to do more factory style build with
I've done the same thing with those Schaller bins using a jewelers saw on the router table. That way I was able to just turn them upside down and trim them. Unfortunately Schaller does not make 1-1/2" deep bins.
That's a great, really smart solution. Being able to put them upside down makes trimming them really easy I'd bet. I REALLY tried convincing them of the business case to make a set of tooling for 1.5" bins. I even spent a week working with different injection molding companies to look at making bins specifically to fit the HF drawers.. designed dies and everything 😅
Hi there ,just wondering where you got the bins ,ive been thinking of a project very similar, but didn't have much luck finding reasonably priced bins ,love your stuff bye the way
I'm in the process of working through storage options for my tools and parts is something I've been thinking about for a while. I think I've decided on the US General boxes as well because of their quality & price. I might have to take some of your ideas for parts storage.
Great Video, I am so glad I came across this video. I was looking for ideas for my set up and this really helped. You ever think about picking up a band-saw? It would help cut those boxes in 1 cut without having to rotate it. Look on marketplace you can get one cheap. You can also use it to cut metal and whatnot.
I really wanted to make my bandsaw work. I had done test cuts with pretty much everything I have with a blade on it and seemed like the table saw with a fine tooth blade had the cleanest edges. My bandsaw would start melting the edge halfway through cutting them when I tried it out
@@GrindhousePerformance ahh, i forget not everyone has a variable speed motor on theirs. I ripped out my ac motor and put treadmill motor on mine to avoid burns and dulling blades by going to fast. Still is a great idea a and it worked for you. You gained a follower!
Love the video man! It definitely made me chuckle that you designed a custom 3-D printed wrench to cut the bins, but not a shop vac adapter for your router. 😏
It comes to a certain hour marker in a project where you just want to get it done hahaha. I wanted to see the counters on the bench and didn't want to wait until the next day. Maybe next time haha
It served me really well for a lot of years and I very nearly bought another one. I could've bought several 😅 hopefully it pays for itself and stays trouble free, I've had some friends have issues with their nearly new machines lately, sounds like during covid they had a lot of issues with quality control. Fingers crossed! It's been a monster unit so far 👍
Nice! I did almost an identical setup in my shop, except I ended up just buying a 3d printer and printing bins to fit. I also used some of those yellow bins that Come in the cheap black parts organizers and they fit pretty well in the thin drawers. I think I like your way better though! Looks awesome
I've got some yellow ones from those organizers too 😅. I'd originally planned to print the bins, but I needed waaaaayyyyy too many to print them in any reasonable kindve time. Thank you for checking out my project! 👍
It's amazing how my brain shuts off sometimes, I was at that point in the project where I wanted to just push through and get it done. I definitely should've printed an adapter 🤣

@@ClarkHaskins it came together really well! I've still got a lot of room to grow. Been waiting for a new video! Great bench idea, not overkill by any means, seriously great idea. I would have done the same thing with routing the bottom of the bench tops. I’ll be asking you where the red bins came from, gonna steal that one! And I want a hat.
Thanks Fred! Routing the top was worth the effort and mess. The bins are from Schaller, they're what people use in pro cabinets. I actually reached out to them about producing a run of several thousand 1.5" deep bins specifically for the Harbor Freight boxes but they weren't interested... I also looked into developing the tooling to injection mold them myself but this seemed like the easiest alternative. I've got black, and red/white/blue hats in stock!
Hey thanks! Glad you liked it. I ended up getting injured shortly after posting this video, and slowly finished everything while I was recovering. I'm going to post a shop tour video + workbench update video sometime soon
Yes yes yes! This is what I'm looking for. I've got a 2000sqf garage and one of my back walls I want to build something similar. I however want to be able to pull the carts out from under the countertop and wheel them over to a workstation or welding table or anywhere in the shop I'm working. I can't get 72" tool chests here so I'll likely need to do smaller ones like yours. Like 10 of them or something. Good to have a visual idea from your video on what that might look like. I subscribed and would like to see more 👍
@shiftradition Look up STORLOCK . Don't know where you live or what your budget it, but you can customize Thierry drawers. It may save you some time. Unless you like doing things yourself. The drawer depth was a deal breaker for me. STORLOCK has dividers. This guy down played all the work he put into these. I have been there to a degree. Again he did A LOT of work . Not to mention the Brain work . This guy is no dummy. I think he will do very well in his endeavors.
It was a ton of work but it's been well worth the effort so far! This was one of those builds I put off a long time but now I wish I'd done years ago. Im planning to do an update video and shop tour after the holidays 👍
Great looking workbench ideal looks great and you put a lot of thought and effort into it I would have wanted to just get it done and put pull out trays in the top drawers but you did it right you will have a nice shop, real nice shop, when you get a shop back look at the Pool section and buy a long hose for your shop vacuum 😊
Hey thanks! It's been a ton of work getting it this far, but it's all been well worth it. It's been a lot better working out there lately with all the updates.
Did I miss something but where did you get your bins? Loving this idea and might do something like this for my house. I was between doing milwaukee pack outs or something like this.
The bins came from Schaller Corp 👍 packout is great IF you're planning on taking stuff with you for projects, or frequently do any kind of remote work. If you're mostly working just on projects at your own house packout can get expensive pretty dang fast
I just stumbled on this video and your channel. Great content and very well produced. I hope you complete videos on the rest of the build. You got a lot of potential here, I hope you start posting more
I thought the same thing I have a red box for home tools and blue for auto related tools. Of coarse I use the green box for my everlast welder and fab equipment.
I really like the workbench made with tool boxes. It looks awesome. I'm currently remodeling my garage and I'm curious. What was the deciding factor on the box? Why not the icon boxes? Great video can't wait to see the finished setup.
I picked these specifically because of the drawer arrangement and width. With the top narrow drawers I think you'll run out of physical space before you hit the weight limit of the drawer slides. If the drawers were a lot larger they'd get extremely heavy full of hardware and that's not really what these style toolboxes are designed for. Being 8 drawers, I'm planning to have the bottom 2 deep drawers be overflow storage for the 6 top drawers. Drawer 4-6 has enough height for adding a second set of slides if I overload them. I also liked the symmetrical look between everything, a lot of the wider boxes have a wide set of drawers and a smaller one. I'm also only putting hardware & supplies in this box. If you're also storing tools there might be better options 👍
So far it's worked out really well! I had gotten injured shortly after this video and then my property went through some pretty bad flooding damage that I've been having to deal with. I did have an IG post about the bench completed with photos if you were curious. I haven't gotten as much use out of the bench as I wanted with all my time away from the shop but what I've organized in it so far has been fantastic. I might do a follow-up down the road once I've put more miles on the bench to see how well the drawer slides etc have held up
been working on a similar setup. biggest difference I've been 3d printing my bins 40mmx40mm and up. thank fully i have multiple printers other wise i would have spent some time looking and bought them. but i do have the upside of doing custom bins for tools and other items as I go
That's fantastic! For how many bins I was going to need, I couldn't justify how long the prints would've taken and couldn't justify adding more printers. I'm planning on printing one-off's for special cases/odd-ball options though. Did you use the HF toolboxes as well?
@@GrindhousePerformance I did for similar reasoning. all though I Did go with more than one color for quick reference in organizing them in a zone kind of reference. Orange hardware, Blue Electronics, Green for welding and PDR. it had helped with quick visual and all so for when I have some one in the shop helping to be able to give them color and drawer for locating items.
VERY nice job with cutting down the red parts bins. Getting the precise depth required makes maximum space utilization. I would like to get some of those bins for my upcoming shop redo. Are they made by Schaller, by chance?
Hey yep these are the 2in (1.75in actual) Schaller Corp bins. I wanted to have enough room to clearly read the labels, and it wouldve been too much wasted space. Im still cutting bins as I'm needing them but it's really not too bad to do. 👍
@@GrindhousePerformance Thanks for the info. I have done a limited batch of bin cutting on the band saw, but will make a jig for TS. Your results are far superior, with no cleaning of the edges. Time to order more bins!

crazy to know your channel is just starting and your production value is already so good and it will just get better from here great video all around keep it up man excited to see where you go
Thanks for that!
That'd be pretty intense 😯
Nice job!
It's been a huge upgrade, I'd definitely get back on it! Way better than expected 🤘
Glad to see some content back on the channel.
Same! It's been too long 👍
@@GrindhousePerformance I see. This would be for tinkering on small stuff. I have a metal bench for heavy work. Thanks
I used my 3d printer to print boxes exactly to my specs. All are 1 mm thick walls and bottom - for the upper drawers. Thicker below for the larger items. Using these cabinets for nuts & bolts is the smartest way to store and retrieve.
That's awesome! How have they held up? I looked at printing my own bins but talked myself out of it because of needing so many
I did the schaller bins in mine. Best thing I did.
These were Schaller as well, by far my favorites
I really need to get into modeling and 3D printing. The small tools you made can make the difference in a process. Good stuff here.
Im planning on some tips videos in the future for beginners! It'll be awhile but I've been penciling pointers as ive been learning myself
This video is awesome. Love that you are selling the design assets used for this.
Hey thank you! I'm glad people were able use them to build their own benches
It's definitely not as heavy duty as a lista or Stanley, but for my needs so far it's been great
Double Whammy. I'm looking at shop organization and my friend has a Datsun. Please put out more shop videos and a follow up to this workbench one too
Im planning a shop update video soon! Just need to finish the dang console haha
Awesome! Shop is going to be sweeeeeeeet
Travis! Dude! Thanks so much. I've learned a lot from you over the years 🤘
you did an awesome job! well thought out. i would have out wood on top of the tool boxes and then glued the butcher board to the wood so it remained in place that way rather than doing what you did, but it worked out.
Definitely would've been a bit simpler that way, I just liked how they look sitting flush to the boxes. Hopefully they don't split over time, it'll be more annoying for me if I need to replace them later on
@@GrindhousePerformance yea that was kind of my thought. i was wondering if they would split later. fingers crossed!! :)
Excellent video! And use of 3d printing to add efficiency, very nice.
Hey thanks! I'm printing parts just about every day now. Would love to get more machines!
Just came across this channel through your 3d printed press die and stoked on your content. Definitely giving me some inspiration for my own shop.
Hey I'm glad to hear that, thanks for checking out my videos! 👍
How have I not seen this channel before?! That z is what dreams are made of
The camera hides a lot Haha, I'm just trying my best to learn and grow 👍 hope you enjoy the series!
Great idea and build thanks. You can 3D print the router vacuum connection. Good luck from New Zealand
Hey thanks, I'm glad you liked it and you're 100% right on printing the adapter
You need to patent and sell that bin cutting pliers. Amazing ingenuity. Subscribed.
Hey thanks for subscribing! You're right, a lot of people have been asking to buy them
Man what happened to this guy. I was totally inspired to 3D print interior stuff for my FJ-40 because of this guy!
I had to put my video projects on hold while I'm sorting out some flood damage at our home. I'll be coming back though!!
I bought 2 of those harbor freight tool boxes like yours too… i think i need to get a 3rd for those storage doors.. keep on trucking…! 🇺🇸🏁🏁😎
It's made a huge difference in the shop, would definitely recommend it!
i was actually thinking about doing the same thing, and routing out a butcher block for those us general cabinets. I like the 26in but maybe not six of the same.. thats alot of small drawers.
Six is definitely overkill, but I thought routing the countertop was a really nice touch versus throwing planks underneath. You won't regret it!
I love the design of this! I will be copying it for my garage.
It's worked out a lot better than expected so far! 👍
Good to see a video from you again. The workbench look great, can wait to see what you make on it!!!
Long overdue, but really excited to be back recording in the shop again. 👍
It's my first time seeing your channel - you sound like an absolute hoot to work with. Subscribed
I'm just trying the best I can! Glad to have ya!
My first time being on your channel I have to say you made me laugh 😂😂😂. I really like your setup for your hardware.
Thanks and welcome! I hope you check out some of my other projects on the channel
If you use bambulab PET-CF you can have the metal upto 150c before the plastic starts to warp. (Not PETG-cf)
These HF 26" cabinets are the best value out there hands down
Anyone who says otherwise hasn't gone to the stores and seen what $3xx gets you elsewhere. If I had to do it all again I'd do it exactly the same. 👍
They used to be. HF changed the design (in 2024) and the new design is not as good as the original. I have several original bases, like you bought, and love them. Not sure what I will buy when I need more.
nice job on the bench and love the process, i have subscribed and need more .....
Hey thank you! I hope you check out some of my other projects in the meantime! 👍
I’m so glad you are back! Keep it up!
Its going go be a spicy winter, I'm excited! 🤘
Miller is an Excellent choice! The "Storage Bin" Idea is Wonderful! As for the router, just get a friend to hold the vacuum close to the work: A Pizza should pay for it.
Ive been extremely happy with the unit so far! Thanks for watching 👍
cant wait to see this shop come together and get organized. love your ingenuity
Hey that means a lot, thank you! Ive really been looking forward to finally upgrading the shop!
I'm in. Loving the process.
Nice job Dave! This very time consuming storage project will pay off when you can walk to it and find what you need.
Amazing piece of work !!! Can't wait to see the next vid !
Hey thanks!!
Man O Man........I need you to make me a batch of those bins! Or one of those little plair thingys.
Gained my sub as well. Exactly what I'm contemplating right now with my new shop.
So far all the work has been worth it! Im still filling drawers and organizing but it's felt like a really, really solid upgrade in the shop
Hopefully get a series 1 someday to do more factory style build with
Great video good luck. You will be building a great memory rembering where those parts are. Next time just 3d print a router vac attachment.
100%! I got caught up in the moment and just wanted to get it done. Everything's been working out great so far though!
@@GrindhousePerformance If that ever happens I will be a customer. Love your ingenuity and videos.
Hi there ,just wondering where you got the bins ,ive been thinking of a project very similar, but didn't have much luck finding reasonably priced bins ,love your stuff bye the way
Hey thank you! The bins are from schaller Corp. I added a link to the description, good luck! 👍
I'm in the process of working through storage options for my tools and parts is something I've been thinking about for a while. I think I've decided on the US General boxes as well because of their quality & price. I might have to take some of your ideas for parts storage.
It's been well worth it! Good luck building yours 👍
De verdad que fue mucha talacha, no se si tienes ayudantes o lo hiciste todo tu,
Se ve nice,
Me sirve de inspiración
It was a lot of work, my wife helped me unload the toolboxes from the truck but otherwise I was solo for this one. I'm glad you liked it!
Saw this video and instantly subscribed! Awesome content
Awesome, welcome! I hope you enjoy some of my other projects on the channel!
@@GrindhousePerformance totally understand! Gotta get shit done sometimes. 🤙🏼
Great to see new content!
Thank you sir, hope the Z's treating you well!
👍👍👍 Job well done 👍👍👍 can’t wait to see the finished project!!!!!
Planning on doing a full shop tour/workbench update video soon!
For the hose adapter, check out Rockler’s “ Dust Right FlexiPort Power Tool Hose Kit, 3' to 12' Expandable”. It has fit my DeWalt 3.25hp router
I'll check it out thanks 👍
This channel is LEGIT 🔥🔥 Keep the videos coming! -Your latest subscriber.
Hey thank you, welcome! I hope you enjoy the other project videos on my channel 👍
Excellent idea!! I've been looking for a budget set up just like yours, im putting this in my favorites folder for sure!!
Awesome! Thank you! So far it's worked out great for me.
Eastwood welders are great for the money! Congrats on king status with that Miller need financing on those machines lol great vids!
Is there a "year-later" follow up video for this awesome build? Thanks!
You deserve more subscribers. Well done, sir.
Really kind of you, people have been great sharing my content despite being so small! Thanks
You have a 3D printer but want to know where to get an adapter for a hose to your router?
Good enuff for me! Liked and subscribed.
It's amazing how my brain shuts off sometimes, I was at that point in the project where I wanted to just push through and get it done. I definitely should've printed an adapter 🤣

I'm sorry if this has already been answered, what are the dimensions of the ikea butcher block counter top? Do you by chance have a link to those?
They're the VRENA countertops and come in 98 or 74in length, 1.125" thick and about 25.575" deep
@@GrindhousePerformance Thank you!
I really like your workbench build and organizing ideas. I'd love to see the finished product and how it's organized. Very cool.
Im planning to film a follow up video after the holidays touring the shop and bench ! 👍
@@GrindhousePerformance How did this work out? I am looking to do a very similar setup for my parts storage! Did you end up continuing with the schaller bins or did you jump down the gridfinity rabbit hole?
@@ClarkHaskins it came together really well! I've still got a lot of room to grow. I've cut bins for a handful more drawers and have been labeling and filling it all out slowly over time after getting the important stuff organized. It's not perfect, but it's significantly better than what I was working with before!
@@ClarkHaskins there's a few pics on my Instagram of the finished bench, I believe it was also finished in the background of the heel plate press die video on YT👍
@@GrindhousePerformance you should totally do a follow up video! I would love to see the current state! I wound up getting the 1" bins for a few drawers, we will see how it works out.
Where did you get the bins? I liked the video! I know you’re going to enjoy your new organization and storage solution.
The bins were ordered through Schaller Corp 👍. Its been working out really well so far, really happy with it overall!
NICE JOB
Great job, I have to have things organized. My OCD won't allow me to search for supplies, that's an awesome setup.
It's made a world of difference for me and still has a ton of room for expansion. Very happy so far thanks !
I had a 240Z years ago, so I am going to subscribe to see this build.
Hell yeah, I hope you enjoy the build videos!
Thanks for sharing this video! Would love to see the follow-up progress on your awesome workbench. Please share if you have ti.
Hey thanks! Glad you liked it. I ended up getting injured shortly after posting this video, and slowly finished everything while I was recovering. I'm going to post a shop tour video + workbench update video sometime soon
glad youre back. Please pick up on the Z. Love to see it finished!!
Working through some Z new content this weekend, aiming to get a couple video updates out before the end of the month!
Look forward to it.
Hit you up on your website. Lmk
I subscribed and would like to see more 👍
@shiftradition
Look up STORLOCK .
Nice video love your work, can you tell me where you got the little red bins.
Hey thank you I'm glad you liked it. The bins came from Schaller Corp
@@GrindhousePerformance thanks mate
Did I miss something but where did you get your bins? Loving this idea and might do something like this for my house. I was between doing milwaukee pack outs or something like this.
The bins came from Schaller Corp 👍 packout is great IF you're planning on taking stuff with you for projects, or frequently do any kind of remote work. If you're mostly working just on projects at your own house packout can get expensive pretty dang fast
I just stumbled on this video and your channel. Great content and very well produced. I hope you complete videos on the rest of the build. You got a lot of potential here, I hope you start posting more
Absolutely! Dealing with some ongoing property damage issues and hoping to get back into the rhythm to get more build videos out! 👍
Being the tool boxes are from harbor freight you could get them in different colors to indicate like sae blue metric in red etc
I couldn't decide if it would be good or bad for my OCD 😅
I thought the same thing
I have a red box for home tools and blue for auto related tools. Of coarse I use the green box for my everlast welder and fab equipment.
Awesome job !! Very cool !! You are talented!!
That's really kind of you to say. Im really happy how everything worked out and I'm excited to put it to use!
Did you ever do a follow up to this video ? How did the storage work out ? Are you happy with the outcome ?
So far it's worked out really well! I had gotten injured shortly after this video and then my property went through some pretty bad flooding damage that I've been having to deal with. I did have an IG post about the bench completed with photos if you were curious. I haven't gotten as much use out of the bench as I wanted with all my time away from the shop but what I've organized in it so far has been fantastic. I might do a follow-up down the road once I've put more miles on the bench to see how well the drawer slides etc have held up
@@GrindhousePerformance Thanks for the reply !
Love this! Rockler has a dust adapter kit.
Hey thanks for the heads up I'll check it out! 👍
Love the video! Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Hey thanks Ira! Made progress this weekend!
been working on a similar setup. biggest difference I've been 3d printing my bins 40mmx40mm and up. thank fully i have multiple printers other wise i would have spent some time looking and bought them. but i do have the upside of doing custom bins for tools and other items as I go
That's fantastic!
@@MrWasjoe that sounds awesome! Nicely done
@@andrewbieger5004 Good luck!!

Glad your back, I'm rebuilding a Z, you were my go-to channel due to build quality. Workshops great but what's happening with your build - looks the same? Putl my tools on walls, found that when the draw closes or the door shuts you don't know it's missing.
