  • I was getting a lot of questions about freshman housing at BYU (Brigham Young University), so I decided to film a mini tour of my dorm room at Helaman Halls (Taylor Hall). Hope this helps! Feel free to comment any questions and I'll try to answer :)
    A few things I forgot to mention in the video:
    - thin hangers allow you to fit a lot more into your closet! I got mine at Costco for really cheap, but they have the same black, velvet ones at Target and other stores too.
    - The beds can be raised or stay low. As seen in the video, my bed is raised and my roommate kept hers low. I would say about 90% of the girls raise their bed to maximize storage space. HOWEVER if you are shorter, a stool of some sort is nice for getting into bed. I use the grey cube I have from Target.
    - Living at Helaman Halls requires you to have a meal plan, which is why we don't usually have a ton of food in our room (although we still have plenty of snacks here!)

      I’m so glad! And don’t worry, if you want to get into Heritage or even another Helaman building, you can always try swapping after you secure a bed space! There’s a lot of shuffling that happens before the semester begins.

    this was super insightful! one question- is there wifi in the dorms? I know you said there is connection in the common area, but does it extend to dorms? I just want to know if I need to buy a router 😅

      @maceyfisher454  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, you or your roommate will need to bring a router! The wifi only covers the common rooms and won't reach all the way to the halls.

    Thank you so much for this! Trying to organize things for my son who is currently in French Polynesia finishing up his mission and will be staying in Budge with his cousin this fall. Tell me about the bed risers. I noticed that your bed was a little taller than your roommate's. What height will the beds be at move in, and what should we buy to get them taller so there is more storage room. You had so many great suggestions for things I haven't thought of. I stayed in Stover a million years ago and love Helaman Halls.

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I think the bed risers have just two settings. I raised mine because I wanted more storage underneath, but I think the Helaman Halls bed frames are usually lowered when you move in. My room had the older bed frames, which you can adjust yourself in like 60 seconds. I think the newer ones (they are in some of the other halls) work the same way.
      NOTE: The bed frames in Heritage Halls can not be adjusted manually so you will have to ask your RA/HA for assistance if you want it adjusted!

      @maceyfisher454  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As for measurements, the white drawers under my raised bed frame are 24 inches and I have space underneath to spare. I am not sure how tall the lowered setting is, but I would estimate around 20 inches.

    Thanks for this video, super helpful for those of us moving in :) what meal plan did you get/ which one do you recommend?

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course! I got the basic one (I would say at least 80% of people also had my same plan), I think it is called "dining plus"?? It is the one that gives you a flat amount every day ($13 I believe for 2020-2021) and you can spend it in the CANC/cafeteria or anywhere else on campus. It was plenty for me and a lot of people have money leftover at the end of the year, especially if you eat off campus a lot. $13 doesn't sound like a ton but since the cafeteria is so discounted for students, my friends and I never ran out of money.

      @maceyfisher454  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ALSO don't stress about settling on meal plan now. You can change it even after the semester starts, so just go with what sounds best and then adjust once you move in and try it out.

    My roommate and I were wondering, did your RA put the stuff on your door or did you bring that? Just trying to decide how to decorate :)

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We added the hearts, but our RA made the name tags. Typically, RAs will put both of your names on the door when they decorate the hall before you move in. It shouldn't matter if you take them down to put up other things though!

    Your video is AWESOME!! My son is moving into Helaman this month for Fall semester. Can you tell me the dimensions of the table over the minifridge? Thanks!

      On BYU’a website there’s a 360 tour of the rooms where you can measure everything!

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! The tabletop is about 40 x 26 in. and it stands at around 29 in. tall.
      I think this is the one I bought from Ikea (unfortunately they have since raised the price): www.ikea.com/us/en/p/linnmon-adils-table-white-s29932181/#content
      It is definitely not necessary, but came in handy since we occasionally prepared food in our dorm!

    This video is amazing! I have a question... are you able to request a roommate? Like if you and your friend are going to BYU would it be possible to room together?

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! You can request a roommate in the spring when contracts are available. They will allow you to choose a bed space and reserve the other bed space in that same room for around 24 hours so that your friends can claim it (your friend will get an email when you reserve it). This process is different for other on-campus housing, 19+ housing, etc. though, so definitely check the website where they review roommate requests!

    Nice video! Do you happen to know if I would be on the 3rd floor of a Helaman Hall if my room is a 3000 room?🤷‍♀️🤔

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes! The digit in the thousands place indicates your floor (1000, 2000, or 3000 for Helaman), the digit in the hundreds place indicates your hall (3100 or 3200, each floor has two halls on it), and the last two digits are specific to your actual room. Hope that helps!

    My daughter will be in the Hinkley bldg in August. Do you know if the beds are single, twin, or twin xl?

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are twin XL I believe! I think the only Helaman dorm with regular twin-sized beds is David John. But I would call/check the website to be sure!

    What’s the bathroom shower situation like is there a separate room just for the toilet and shower?

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Each floor has 1 communal bathroom with 3 toilets and 5 showers. I was initially worried that sharing with so many girls would be too crowded but we never had to wait to shower, etc. Also, the communal bathrooms are constantly cleaned by university staff so you never have to worry about cleaning it yourself. (Exception: David John Hall. In this hall, you share a bathroom with one other room, so 4 girls sharing 1 bathroom. You do have to clean it yourself though.)

    Did the closet already have the towel hanger inside of it? Or did you put that up yourself?

    what’s the tallest you can raise your bed? i move into taylor next month and i have storage drawers that are 30 in tall but i’m afraid they’ll be a couple inches too tall!

    • @maceyfisher454
      @maceyfisher454  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The drawers I used (from Target) are 24 in. tall and there were a few inches between those drawers and my bed. I am not sure that 30 in. drawers would fit, but definitely check the website to see if they list exact dimensions! Also, there are at least 2 different types of bed frames used throughout Helaman Halls, so the exact height could vary depending on the bed frame you end up with. Sorry I don't have an exact answer for you!
