To be fair, Splatoon doesn't have aim assist for dual analog stick controls so it's harder to use than most other console shooters (though IMO I agree that motion is better and I'm kind of shocked it hasn't gotten more adoption in other games, at least from Sony since their controllers also have a motion sensor).
It's due to how other companies implement motion controls in the nost gimmicky fashion resembling the Wii ( most being waggling which is both lazy and irritating).
The issue here is Splatoon lacks more in-depth Gyro Aim (Motion Control) settings. If Acceleration existed, you can completely increase your maximum range of motion with minimal physical movement and still be quite steady. I actually made a video about this not too long ago for CoD where I was able to optimize the use of Acceleration so I had access to MUCH higher Sensitivity levels while still being able to stay steady, thus giving me a feeling a greater freedom and control: th-cam.com/video/e41IoftsrNQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oZeD5QRX6425pX4Z
I never thought about having more advanced gyro control. Personally I have trouble deciding what sensitivity I wanna use anyways, so having that much more control would make that harder lol
@Radi0Active01 Part of the issue with you trying to find that right "sensitivity" feeling is because you probably feel like youre compromising somewhere from day to day. For example, you can crank up the Sens one day and be great while doing much closer ranged engagements (not worrying about long range and very precise aim). But the next, you may feel slightly "jittery" and playing more for longer range. I use to do the same when I had Linear Sensitivity (no Acceleration). But as I incorporated Acceleration into my settings, I noticed I was doing this less and less to the point where I actually love where my settings are now but only tweak my "Steadying" based on how my jitters may feel. I now have both great control of very fine movements for sniping, can track enemies well, and also have excellent range of motion thus using my Right Thumbstick quite minimally. If devs implemented Gyro Aim at the same depth as say Fortnite or MW3, you would be surprised how much you can manipulate the settings for your preference. Gyro Aim is arguably the most versatile input method currently because of this.

I learned to play Splatoon with stick controls because I spent many hours on long drives playing story mode, and if I had motion on, every bump and turn would flip my view around. (I did however, learn to use motion, and it is objectively better and more precise.)
I also played sorry mode (and now side order) on long car rides. But I just suffer through the bumps and turns messing with my camera. I'm too stubborn to play stick controls again.
I am both a sticks and motion player. I got both e-liter scope and splatterscope to 5* before I swapped over to motion. Now I use them interchangeably depending on the weapon. Though, overall motion controls are far superior because of your ability to have very precise control and movement. Ggs for trying sticks for a week, it’s a good challenge
the absolute jumpscare i got realizing i was in the match at 14:41 (roombus) anyways i used to play sticks when i didn't have a switch and would play my partner's copy of splatoon 2! for some reason, i found rollers significantly easier to play with sticks and haven't been able to play consistently with them outside of salmon run since i learned motion controls
I’m a stick controls player (I’ve been playing since the launch of Splatoon 2) and I have my sensitivity to max (Stick sensitivity 5) when I play. (I grew up playing games such as Plants vs zombies garden warfare, which is stick controls only.) With Splatoon 3 I tend to take advantage of main weapon strafing and moving my character one direction while having the camera movement go along with the character. I also heavily utilize jumping to increase ink spread and heavily moving my character left and right in both humanoid and swim form) I do better with explaining via visuals of how I play vs explaining how I play with text though, but I hope this can help you with some tips/ideas on how to get better at stick controls if you ever want to try them again.
I use sticks because motion doesn't really work for me. My hands are so shaky that even if i have the sensitivity turned all the way down, it's still really hard to be precise. I've tried motion controls multiple times, and it was just physically uncomfortable. Sticks let me play without always having to be in an awkward position.
I've noticed, that I just strafinmg more to correct shots when usings sticks, but it would seem that the correction is in the turn of the camera with motion controls
The only reason why I use sticks is because both my wireless controller and joy-cons have drift. The joy-cons are unplayable (you can’t move at all like it keeps going all over the place and the camera moves like crazy) HOWEVER the wireless controller isn’t as bad so I have used motion controls rarely but u can’t use them properly cus my character KEEPS DRIFTING UGHH. I’m also clearly broke to get a new one so I have a wired controller I got for my birthday (yay) so I’m obligated to use sticks.Anyways I really can’t use them and I’d really like to. End of story :/
I have 1,034 hours in this game only with stick controls, I’ve been in S rank like, 4 separate times including the current day (due to rank decay) and was at S+ at one point. Watching people who only play motion try sticks is funny because, Yknow, they’re not used to it.
See, it’s funny because I’m a stick player and I tried using motion controls, so now I went from being a carbon roller deco player into a sloshing machine player. It’s completely different, and it’s making me wonder, how do people play carbon roller with motion controls?
Fair. But would you consider trying it for a bit longer JUUUUUST in case? As long as you like the game your way. The game feels completely different changing from stick to motion and vice versa.
I think if stick movement were as smooth as they are with motion there wouldn’t be a big issue. I don’t know why it’s not as smooth since using stick on motion should be the same as without motion
Your answer is in your first statement. If you were used to motion controls like most splatoon players, then you would probably also find them annoying or difficult.
I mean, I did realized that, but it's pretty unreliable where you'll end up facing. Maybe it can be mastered though. But if someone is willing to master something like that, they should just learn motion ;)
As a professional stick player. Motion controls on joy cons really suck and I tried motion and it just did NOT work out. It felt like there was this signal interference. And it just didn’t feel right. With sticks I can also play in any position like laying down and my wrists don’t have to be pointed at the screen. Also to answer your question as to why anyone would press the Y button is because it allows the camera to zoom quickly if you want to do a 180. also as a stick player I DO have precision. Having played for over 600 hours of Splatoon 3 on sticks I notice my hands make a ton of micro movements to line up my aim. So like it’s all instinct.
@@Radi0Active01no actually. I just checked and i have it on 2.3. (Tv) I prefer to be able to move the camera quickly. That’s why my thumb does micro adjustments all the time in rapid succession. Instinctual aim. (What’s funny is that I used to be terrible at this game as a kid) oh and on handheld I have it on 3.5 (probably because I have less of a field of view as the screen is smaller) the only weapon being a problem with sticks is chargers. That’s pretty much it. (Pencil being an exception).
I am baffled you have precision with that high of stick sens. Accuracy maybe, but precision? Of course I only played for a week. I'm sure it'd get better with 600 of sticks, but that would be counterproductive for me to try that 😄
@@Radi0Active01 just checked the difference between accuracy and precision. (Precision is how close each shot is to eachother on the target, and accuracy is the actual area itself.) Yeah you’re right then my precision isn’t too good, but I have great accuracy. I’m actually in S+ rank and have fairly good knowledge of the game. Solo que just sucks.
Accuracy and precision are frequently used interchangeably, so I understand how you have good "precision" (accuracy). Nice work. I bet if motion controls didn't have as bad of motion delay, it would be easier for people to adapt to it. Glad you can make the most of sticks though
I used sticks for a long time but had the same idea as you to try the other method. Spent a week on motion wasn’t really a fan but when I went back to stick I had forgotten all my muscle memory. So now I’m a motion control user. 😅

Early on, you mentioned Y being a bit useless with sticks, but that isn't quite true. You can use it in conjunction with a Squid Roll or sub strafe to turn around quickly, or at least more quickly than you would by simply holding the stick to one side. Pro tip from a stick player lol
Someone else brought that to my attention as well. I had not considered that during the video, but it probably would somewhat work. I think it's a bit janky though.
@@Radi0Active01It's definitely a little jank and not always useful, but it's saved me a good number of times and even helped me get some really cool-looking turnaround one-shot kills with Wiper Deco lol
It's very context dependant. Comes down to preference in terms of ease of use. But I believe skills are fully shown through motion of you take the time to learn it.
I use it in conjunction with motion, which only allows left and right movement. I did not use sticks exclusively where it allows vertical movement with stick as well.
I have put about 1000 hours into stick controls in S3 (+5 sensitivity) cos I like playing after smoke sessions and the motion + my monkey brain can't compute how the up/down aiming works. if there was up down on the stock as well when motion is on I would use it
I think you should use -5 sensitivity. It was easier for me but its kinda slow(not slow slow but still) if that doesnt work for you, then practice from -4 - 5 until you find a level thats comfortable for you :)
Motion controls in splatoon are better than stick controls in splatoon but they're both still bad in Splatoon. Something about Splatoon's motion controls control a lot worse than other games with it, and even a lot of games that don't naturally support it
I'm using stick controls since 2020 and joy con grip got x in every mode in 2 and 2400+ in the tentatek division and 2300 in the Takaroka division I'm using the octobrush and it's not hard to play with sticks
As a stick main, For what purpose do people go like “oooh fun challenge to use sticks” and hate it, and most ppl i seen (havent watched the vid yet, wont blame you) tend to blame sticks being bad and go “never again”. Sticks can work if you just get good, this game doesn’t require perfect mechanics to be good anyways
Switching to sticks after that many hours is what makes it a challenge. The reason most say "never again" is because most are motion players. I did a small poll, but about 77% of players are motion. It works vice versa as well. There are people in the comments saying they'll never try motion again. I'm not trying to diss your choices. Sorry if you took it that way.

Lol! At least playing against bots isn't as bad (I think?).
I used stick in S1 for so long (didn’t have S2) and kept using sticks in S3 until i reached around 100hrs then I switched to motion and totally dropped it, It was was at first but now with 500 hrs on it I can’t go back
Believe it or not I got to S+ rank with sticks but I got to say motion is better
I actually do believe it since I've recently met multiple S+ stick players. Still think they could maybe do even better if they mastered motion.
same :)
RADI! could you maybe consider doing a video for ALL the different types of controls? i.e handheld, pro controller, and detatched¿ amazing video though, youre crazy underrated ! def turned on notifs alr c:
I could, not a bad idea. Any particular reason you'd want that video, or is it you just think it's be a good idea?
Also thanks for subbing and turning on notifs!
Okay you are cracked if you can play charger with sticks
Sorry, just saw this now. Thanks for the ggs. I still despise the week of sticks I did.
This is practically me trying to use motion controls asdfghjkl
the absolute jumpscare i got realizing i was in the match at 14:41 (roombus)
anyways i used to play sticks when i didn't have a switch and would play my partner's copy of splatoon 2! for some reason, i found rollers significantly easier to play with sticks and haven't been able to play consistently with them outside of salmon run since i learned motion controls
Small world 😄
These videos help make my influenza bearable
Oof, being sick sucks. I'm glad I could aid in making it bearable though!
I also heavily utilize jumping to increase ink spread and heavily moving my character left and right in both humanoid and swim form)
I do better with explaining via visuals of how I play vs explaining how I play with text though, but I hope this can help you with some tips/ideas on how to get better at stick controls if you ever want to try them again.
Another guy was talking about strafing as well. Not something I had considered. Perhaps if I revisit this topic I can try it out.
I use sticks because motion doesn't really work for me. My hands are so shaky that even if i have the sensitivity turned all the way down, it's still really hard to be precise. I've tried motion controls multiple times, and it was just physically uncomfortable. Sticks let me play without always having to be in an awkward position.
ive used stick from splatoon 2's release to 2022 and when i switched to motion i suddenly realized why i was C rank

This is true
I've noticed, that I just strafinmg more to correct shots when usings sticks, but it would seem that the correction is in the turn of the camera with motion controls
Oh yeah, 100%! With camera I wouldn't take the time to walk sideways to change my shots velocity
As a Sticks player with over 1,000 hours, i’ve been doing a 7 Days motion challenge thing lol. its honestly not that bad.
Send it then! Keep using it!
@@Radi0Active01 yeah:D is it ok if i make a video out of it? i will give credit
Of course! I'd love to see what you cook up. Please tag me in it or something so I see it!
it’s uploaded now!
That's unfortunate. I think nintendo has a way to send joycon in for repair at their cost since they're detective. Might wanna look into that.
@@Radi0Active01 sure will 👍
13:58 I DID WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT
also salmonella run was my joke not mars' :(
Whoops, forgot to fact check that 😅
I spent the last year thinking that I was a stick player when I’ve been a motion player this whole time 💀 this is so embarrassing
I was pretry good at stick controls for a while but i decided to switch to motion because i thought i was interesting. I havent gone back
Ya know, that's one thing I've noticed as a consistency. People who get used to motion never go back. And I think that's for a reason 😆
4:32 “friggin die”
I stand by my command
I have 1,034 hours in this game only with stick controls, I’ve been in S rank like, 4 separate times including the current day (due to rank decay) and was at S+ at one point. Watching people who only play motion try sticks is funny because, Yknow, they’re not used to it.
See, it’s funny because I’m a stick player and I tried using motion controls, so now I went from being a carbon roller deco player into a sloshing machine player. It’s completely different, and it’s making me wonder, how do people play carbon roller with motion controls?
I've never felt that sticks was good for any weapon, so I've always used motion for everything, including carbon
As someone who switch from sticks to motion this is first experience from splatoon 2
I meant *first time *
I love using stick control ngl. I hate how the game moves itself depending on where you are so much I overcame the fear 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
I’ve played too many other shooters before splatoon, so I could never get used to motion controls. Turned that off the second I finished the tutorial.
Fair. But would you consider trying it for a bit longer JUUUUUST in case? As long as you like the game your way. The game feels completely different changing from stick to motion and vice versa.
7:56 that music sounds SO familiar but I can't remember what it's from
I believe it's from Streetpass Mii Plaza on 3DS. More specifically from the Find Mii game. I think anyways.
I’ve only played stick controls lol. Since 2015
That would be crazy to try to switch. Although I encourage trying it out long enough to form an opinion on it
I think if stick movement were as smooth as they are with motion there wouldn’t be a big issue. I don’t know why it’s not as smooth since using stick on motion should be the same as without motion
I have always used stick motion, I never had problems, I still don't understand why most players find it annoying or difficult to use
Your answer is in your first statement. If you were used to motion controls like most splatoon players, then you would probably also find them annoying or difficult.
Did you know that if you press the Y button and hold a direction you can turn around instantly with sticks !
I imagine your stick sensitivity is pretty low on the spectrum then?
My adhd is so bad i litterally cant use stick contols, its so god damn slow i end up not being able to shoot correctly, plus i alr hav my sensitivity high bc its super slow. Motion controls have made it so much easier to play on my switch ppl question how i cant play a game with it on. Plus i dont hav a pc & im alr much better a fps games with a mouse. But since i cant affor a pc i had to play on switch & played Warface for a total of over 600hrs bc it was free & i didnt hav much money to get other games.
Anyway ppl u dont use motion contols plz tell me ur secrets
Bro I'm the opposite, my adhd is so bad motion controls makes me wanna quit the game
Update: I USE MOTJONS CONTROLS AND IM NEVER GOING BACM
ooky spooky
It was a nightmare that wouldn't end. Longest week of splatoon ever 😖
@@Radi0Active01 Can't imagine the pain you must have felt. Thank you for your service o7
You're welcome! Here to help the masses
I use stick controls primarily because i play on Switch Lite aka always in handheld mode
I use sticks and I’m a brella main :)
i used to pity brella mains, but after getting my ass beat multiple times by people using undercovers, i realize that you don't need pity. godspeed
Stick controls are mad easy, I always thought that motion was hard it seems that it’s the contrary
It's very context dependant. Comes down to preference in terms of ease of use. But I believe skills are fully shown through motion of you take the time to learn it.
been using stick controls since splatoon 1 i tried motion but it feels weird and ive played other games with only stick controls so its easier
as a stick player YIPPEE for you
You’re telling me, you don’t already use the stick? I thought everyone did
I use it in conjunction with motion, which only allows left and right movement. I did not use sticks exclusively where it allows vertical movement with stick as well.
I have put about 1000 hours into stick controls in S3 (+5 sensitivity) cos I like playing after smoke sessions and the motion + my monkey brain can't compute how the up/down aiming works. if there was up down on the stock as well when motion is on I would use it
stick not stock
I think you should use -5 sensitivity. It was easier for me but its kinda slow(not slow slow but still) if that doesnt work for you, then practice from -4 - 5 until you find a level thats comfortable for you :)
Thanks, but I ain't going back to sticks for a while if at all 😅
@Radi0Active01 def trauma from stick controlls
@@shiba284 Exactly
Motion controls in splatoon are better than stick controls in splatoon but they're both still bad in Splatoon. Something about Splatoon's motion controls control a lot worse than other games with it, and even a lot of games that don't naturally support it
When i Get Both Splatoon 3 Switch With The Expansion DLC I’m Gonna Use 4.5 Sens & Also I’m a Splat TryHard Btw!
Awesome
But of course
I'm using stick controls since 2020 and joy con grip got x in every mode in 2 and 2400+ in the tentatek division and 2300 in the Takaroka division I'm using the octobrush and it's not hard to play with sticks
The first 2 words in this video together are terrifying, please never say them again. 🤣
You have my word
i use stick as i play handheld/couldnt understand motion controls and mainly play scope chargers (:
Ppl actually struggle with stick controls?? So cwazy
haha u know what its like to be me, never play with motion in any game (i move too much irl)
I used to play splatoon 2 with stick controls idk how I did it….. no wonder I never got past level 14
As someone who's controller doesn't support motion, this video feels sad
It's a completely different game
@@Radi0Active01 im not offended really, just saying lmao
Oh, good 😅. I bet it would be a bit annoying having majority saying how much they hate using what you're using.
Motion in this game does not feel nearly as good as it did in splatoon 1, I'll suffer through stick controls and with tri slinger and charger at that
Maybe Splatoon 4 they'll finally improve on Splat 1 motion
@@Radi0Active01 and with enough hopium maybe more stick settings to go along with better feeling motion controls
I know people encourage others to use motion but honestly, i CANNOT use them, its not causw i get motion sick or anything, its just incredibly hard imo 😭
I forgot what the y button does lol
I use stick control
I've used +5 sensitivity with sticks since splat 1 and have never deviated and win at least 85% of my ranked matches so seeing someone struggle so much with sticks is...interesting.
85% huh. Do you play much? Surely you're pretty high ranked with that win rate. Quite impressive 👏
@@Radi0Active01 I used to play more but took quite a break from September to November but right now me and my bud are S+40
Holy crap. How? With sticks?? Do you play x battles much?
@@Radi0Active01 I dabble in X rank but usually I just like to play salmon run and normal ranked and I guess the best reason to how I’m more used to sticks is because I play A LOT of shooter games that use sticks so I guess it’s just muscle memory :)
I admire it
I got to x rank 2.1k power in sp2 using sticks on charge but I got into motion in3 - no turning back
That's an incredible feat, especially for splat 2! Glad you joined the correct side though!
I get motion sickness using the motion control.
I play on sticks and I’m perfectly fine
I cannot with motion because I have very shaky hands 😭
im forced to use sticks because of my usb controller
I always used stick controls and I still do😭😭
Hey, you do you
Motion controls are so confusing to me😭
NOW TRY 1 MONTH WITH STICK
nah, I'm good
I use stick and I usually get 6-10 kills with flux and I have over 200 wins with flux using stick because I hate gyro controls I don't hate people who like gyro controls
