Catching bass, walleye and trout in my local CO reservoir is fun, but nothing beats surfcasting the Jersey shore. It’s my absolute favorite place and method of fishing.
Depending on the current, you can be in waters that are usually hundreds of miles away from each other. One day it’s cold, dark upswell and you’re fishing in New England watching whales. The next day it’s clear warm Gulf Stream water and *poof* you’re in the Carolinas. Same beach the very next day. Great blend of northern and southern conditions and species.
We head to Ortley Beach every August and for me, it beats going on vacation elsewhere. Nothings better than going home and being with family and friends. The Best.
After greeting the family, unpacking, and the obligatory “quick walk up to the beach”, it’s time to inspect my gear, and take stock of what I need. Next, a quick trip to Hook House for tackle and bait (shoutout to Dennis, he takes care of me year after year). I’ll spend some time tying up rigs for the week while I catch up with my family. I always look forward to the moment my aunt gasps and yells at me once she notices the bait in the refrigerator.😁
    Time well spent.
That evening and every morning/evening for the next week I’m in the surf. Sometimes I get real lucky and get a schoolie striper, or a snapper blue during a bust I can reach, but the monster bass and gator blues have long since moved on before I arrive. Early august is like, the WORST time for beach stripers, but I count my blessings and am thankful for having the time at all. I’ll chunk a couple surfcasters after the lifeguards leave especially if the family comes down to the beach with the little kids so they can reel in something- usually dogfish or skates.
Mornings I’m mobile targeting fluke with a lighter set up in the surf and wash from lavalette to seaside.-c’mon shore-mat!
Truth is, it doesn’t matter what I catch while I’m there, nothing beats that “tap-tap-tap” on the line in the surf.
Just a few short weeks to go and I’ll be in my favorite place, with my favorite people.
    Honestly, I can’t freakin’ wait.
