Glad I found this wonderful advice. I recently came back to the game. I shot every day in my early 20'S for a few years. I got pretty good then life happened. After 22 years I'm back. Ive got two months in. Started feeling like I was making progress then today happened. Played like total crap. I have no idea what happened today. Make hard shots then miss easy shots. I'm committed to the game and will be for the rest of my life. I think I'm rushing to get good again which is definitely a bad idea. Appreciate the advice. Will try a new pre shot routine tomorrow. Take care
Can’t wait to apply this. Agree 100% This is really going to help me. I’m a top shooter in BCA league. My mental game is where I’m looking for help. All this info is awesome. Never realized until hearing it. my conscious mind and subconscious mind we’re battling each other.
David I just got back from league night.... I just wanted you to know I put your lesson to good work and beat 3 people that I wouldn't have if not for this mental lesson. Going forward things will not be the same for my opponents!
Some of the best players I have ever gone up against were not very bright. Their game was good because they played on instinct, not trying to outguess their opponent. The more you practice and the more you compete in tournaments, the better your instincts become.
Exactly what I was looking for. As you talk my subconscious mind is giving flash images of examples of my mistakes. I will be rewatching this video many times. Thanks a million!!!
I am 68 yrs. old and have been shooting for 2 yrs. and when I practice I'm satisfied with my skill, but when I play with someone I feel bad for them when I'm winning and I make a mental note to miss the shot and break my concentration so they wont feel bad for loosing but I processed that thought so quickly that after the game I forgot about the mental note and couldn't understand why I was shooting so poorly. Some games I would be so focused that I would run-out and be surprised about how quickly the game seemed to go. Now that I 've watched this video the mystery is solved. I still have these disrupting emotions and I hope I can put them aside during a game. In the mean time I'll study the "Mind Game " more. I know I have the potential to be a good player.
I know what you mean. I would never throw a match in a competition but I remember when i played as a junior a moment of empathy could turn my subconscious mind against me making me lose match to an opponent that couldn’t win a frame against me any other time. It was a brief thought about his supporting mother that triggered me then i could not snap out of it so the match embarrassingly dragged on and on as i waited for him to win because i could not hit a ball straight.
great vid,,,im not a regular pool player but you came up on google for mental games and i will apply some of your steps here in my day to day business,,,many thanks
I’ve only hit that perfect break shot once and that was years ago. It was so damn beautiful!! Thanks for the tip! So important and beneficial to the game of Billiards 🎱
Thanks Dave. Your video was awesome and I now have a new friend. My subconscious mind. We shall see if he comes through or not. I have a lot of confidence in him. but we shall see.
good stuff mr sapolis, now the people that watch this and can absorb it need to quicken the recognition process and will see even bigger strides in their game. everything you said makes sense and then it comes down to if you can develop a quad core processor instead of having a dual core processor. if one can literally speed up the analytical process ones game will become more instinctive and free flowing and thus induce the mighty FREE STROKE MODE or to be EN FUEGO.
I play a pretty damn good game. However, I do have a pre-shot routine and a trigger as you mentioned. Two things dog me. 1. Focus. I tend to lose focus at the last second. 2. I tend to not trust my original alignment and occasionally adjust it and miss by the amount of adjustment. I'm so thankful that I ran across this video, when I am practicing at home, I'm going to bear down using your instructions. Thank you so much!
I love to work on my game and with a friend Introduced me to this. Mind game I'm going to try it and stick with it and see where I be. Thank you very much. Daved.
I'm serious brother! I cant wait to keep you posted on the progress. Just wait man. Would be awesome to link with you and play some time and get some of your expertise
nice advices. thank you from iraq. when i imagine the shot i do it and when i can't imagine it its high possibility to miss it. i play snooker not pool game but i am learning alot from you. thanks.
You are absolutely correct and I have been knowing this for a long time however you have to give you're unconscious and your subconscious mind a basis to go off of because if it's used to doing it go wrong way but with results he will continue to do it that way you will run the table what play position play that great safety but you have no idea how the hell you did it and everybody that plays you will be like he's so lucky at the table I know this because at one time I was that pool player that just did it didn't ask questions didn't even want to know why I could shoot the way I could I could play position where I could exedra but I just had to go asking questions will at the end of it all I found my answer and it was my subconscious mind for my infant being was playing the game for me see the worst thing I ever did was trying to find out how I aimed so at that point I had to start all over because I consciously did not know how to aim even though I knew how to aim also consciously did not know how to play position and did not know how to play safety so I've become very aware of what I did not know how to do anyways I guess it was for the best because now I understand the game even more and I can consciously or subconsciously do the things I need to do I can physically angle shot but I was much rather let my subconscious mind do it
I just find out about your video, I listened it very carefully and I am amazed! I just have one question. Did You unintentionally mixed up terms subconscious and unconscious and which one is it? One moment you are saying subconscious, next is unconscious. Just need You to make this clear for me. Thanks in advance.
another huge tip to become better then a B player is to develop the "dominant eye" to aim with and it will become an subconcious action too...you're just aiming like that an wouldnt even notice it. that doesnt mean to close one eye...lol the dominant eye is used and the other eye is used to adjust subconsiously. if you're gonna be a decent pool player plz plz plz learn to stay down on the whole routine and watch the ball go in or not as that will help immensely in your game too. jumping took forever to break for me as i started out gambling first instead of actually focusing on learning all the good habits first and you learn alot of bad habits which you'll need to break including jumping up on a follow through.
I like to call my unconscious mind "Yang" the opposite of Yin which is Negative that makes Yang very positive and peaceful. Zen is also another good name if I was to use a different name
The hardest thing is when let's say it's hill hill, you have to shoot a difficult shot for 1 million dollars: you do all the preshot stuff, decide to trust your stroke and trust your unconsciousness then right before you pull the trigger, in the back of your mind you know that if you miss this shot you'll be upset with yourself but then you try not to think about that and just trust your stroke. That internal struggle of not allowing yourself to think about the stroke mechanics is uncomfortable and challenging when everything is on the line. But can probably be mastered with practice. That said, I've never seen a single elite player not break a sweat at some point, so they all struggle with this at least a tiny bit. They all shoot much better in practice than on Mosconi cup. ( Maybe except Rodney Morris, Jayson Shaw, Warren Kiamco, and maybe Efren and SVB )
you need to shorten your preshot processing time buddy and take less warm up strokes...theres less time to get doubts and be afraid and you'll become more instinctive. this is true for all sports by the way. that damn shot that you are worrying about...literally if you've played enuff pool you should've have shot it thousands of times already. hesitation means death...lol.
Yes sir, I provide specific tips for individual players as a coach through my website. I also have a large volume of free information provided here on TH-cam. www.thezone-spc.com
Nothing you will ever do can mimic the feeling of pressure while in the heat of battle. This is why your practice game is so much fun and relaxing. The best way to cope with tournament pressure is to continue to practice, and enter other tournaments as time allows. This will get you use to the feeling of high pressure play, and practice will give you the confidence that only comes with being well prepared. Good luck!
There really is some kinda fate or law of attraction. Just today i was thinking man i have made very kinda shot there is its in me just let it out and quit over thinking it and i burned uo my tio making balls so fast the tip of my cue smelled like a burned vacume cleaner belt no shit. Now i ran across this video. Also my friend has called me 1r times in 2 weeks right when i was texting him. Life is magic man

How do you think while you're in the chair? Should you try to (waste) focus/concentration on the game, or is it okay to let the thoughts wander off?
Niels Feijen has a nice video on that
Go to your happy place and use that time to detox the same as a couple days

Over analysis leads to mind paralysis.
I like to call my unconscious mind "Yang" the opposite of Yin which is Negative that makes Yang very positive and peaceful. Zen is also another good name if I was to use a different name
So i have to name my unconsciousness, and i have to talk to it while playing?

what to do when you feel pressure while you play?
