  • YES! YOU ASKED FOR IT! In all honesty, the Classic 350 and the Dominar 400 belong to two different genres of motorcycling. But the internet is weird and this turns out to be one of the most searched terms on the web. Why are people searching for this? Does it make any sense at all? Should you be comparing the two? Shumi and Varun Painter sit together and discuss in our newest series called, YOU ASKED FOR IT!

As someone who has been riding the Dominar for the past year and has covered 5000+kms only in touring, I don't personally agree with all the criticisms of the bike. I test rode almost all 300-400cc bikes before purchasing, and I picked the Dominar for not only speed but the feel and handling.
My only complaint with the bike is that I wish the fuel tank capacity would be more. A 17-18 or 21 liter tank like the Mojo would have been awesome.
To each to his own, but as Powerdrift always says. Test ride and decide for yourself.

Have the dominar 400 for last 4.5 years. Not even once i felt the points mentioned in the vid. Yes refinement levels could have been better when compared with ninja and r3 but again more the sugar, sweeter the tea.
However, my cruising speed on dominar is 120-140 somewhere and absolutely no vibrations. It munches miles like no other and on highways the weight really give a stability to the bike. Although, in city its a bit of pain to cut corners with its high turning radius, also the gearing makes it a pain. But its kinda get used to in sometime,i have a strong build and weight never really bothered me. Acceleration is linear and pretty good. 6th gear on highways is love.
I do not really understand why the hate towards domi.
Although (must mention) i prefer my bike not to look like a mule all the time with saddle stays and top rack and all. But again my version is only 35bhp not even 40 and it keeps me grinning all the time. (2017 model i.e- no gear indicator, no avg consumption display, no twin exhaust, no *USD* , no 40 bhp)

I feel Shumi as a rider is fairly different in terms of preference of the feel of a motorcycle compared to the average Indian riders. So take these opinions about the Dominar with this in mind. Take a ride. You'll know what to do.

    • @VigneshV-lo6fi
      @VigneshV-lo6fi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @NVIDIAGeekify

@@VigneshV-lo6fi I disagree. No one should inculcate anybody else's preferences as their own. He's a fast rider and doesn't care about fuel economy and what not. As a previous 2015 Duke 390 owner, I dislike the bike because of its lack of comfort (184cm tall) and vibrations, not to mention the fuel efficiency. It was nice to wring the throttle but it was always short-lived in Indian cities with the roads and traffic, and as Shumi said about the Dominar, too vibey on the highways to take it past 100 kph. Kitna deti hai is an important variable as you'd want to ride a motorcycle, not just look at it and feel good that you have it, and sadly I've seen few who buy Dukes and rarely ride it out.

@@VigneshV-lo6fi i understand what you're saying but here's what i mean. The Dominar is not made for Shumi a Duke 390 is. The Dominar maybe doesn't make sense to Shumi but it does to the rider that it's tailored for. Every rider has different expectations and requirements from their motorcycle and you must keep that in mind whenever you listen to any auto journalists reviews and then decide what you can take away from it. The mindset of the person must be understood before you take their advice.

    • @vivejk4443
      @vivejk4443 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I don't think people are understanding what Shumi meant. Remember when dominar was launched and it came with the tagline haathi math paalo? It created a big rift between loyal RE fans and value for money and spec sheet obsessed Bajaj fans. This also made the Bajaj fanboys compare every single motorcycle launches with dominar and criticize it.
So what Shumi means is that dominar is not perfect and people should stop pretending it is just by looking at the spec sheet. People should take test rides and see if they like it and stop comparing every single 2 lakh rupees motorcycles with dominar.

You sit in the dominar whereas you sit on the re. Also re lacks power beyond 90. You can munch miles in the dominar easily going 120-130 on highways and expressways. The good thing about the enfield is because of the long stroke and a huge crank, it makes it a lot easier motorcycle to just accelerate and carry loads at lower rpm and that's ideal for touring.
I would yes we would like more power but when are you ever going to achieve 8000 rpm and stay there? Not in a thumper, not in India mate. For 90kmph average cruising speed a 20 bhp long stroke motorcycle is categorically "enough" for touring in India.
And let's not forget it's air-cooled and a stone breaking the radiator fan would leave you in middle of nowhere. Once you get Outta schoolboy poster book attitude about motorcycles and start looking at what really matters when touring you will start seeing the requirements.
I have been an advocate of long strokes instead of over squared engine for sometime now, especially for touring. So more power equates to more displacement. In that aspect i simply think a 350cc long stroke is the best compromise between fuel economy, torque and rpm.

I got the Classic 350 for its timeless design..... Its like the Safety pin - design has not needed any improvement over a century - in fact they took extra care to not change it while having to redisign and fit an entirely new double frame chassis and engine combo.
It will look just as appealing in my garage after a 100 more.
On the road the customization options are just too many thereby not much trouble if you want to modify.
Mechanics at every nook and cranny know this machine very well. Or even with the new one will learn it quickly including all jugaar.
Only thing i would pay to see an upgrade is the spoked tubeless tires - cast tubeless while available are not best for badly broken surfaces..... And tubed ones are more vulnerable to puncture
Coming to the Dominar.... It's nice but just not for me given it's tall gearing.... And many other small bits (looks, tires, slow speed friendliness) which come together to make it a "No" for me - seems They have had to sacrifice somethings in order to take it to the expressways - but then they have not gone the whole 9 yards to reach the KTM 390 standards either.
So ended up as a bike which does not really know what it wants you to feel from it (lacks character - IMHO)

Boy, you take the cake - on Enfield payroll.
Between, the weight comes in handy on highways when you are power riding. I just completed Bangalore- Vizag - Araki - Bangalore and can vouch that the weight did wonders on the highway when heavy vehicles pass you at high speed.
Take a Domibar for a long ride and do an unbiased review
Interesting, RE 350 Max speed mentioned is 110 and Dominar is 160. In the review, Shumi says both Cruze at 110 the same way. Maybe because Dominar is 190 Kgs and would not go beyond 110 :-)

Vibrations are intolerable in RE not sure about the new one. So it totally depends on an individual of what actually there need is.

    2. The current state of jawa bikes and Mojo 300 in the Market - what went wrong with them, what was or is great about them ? I included mojo 300 because they all have the same engine and the bikes are tuned in different ways to suit their own character.

The Dominar is indeed one of the best value for money bikes, but Bajaj messed up its marketing. Dominar in my opinion is good for all. A little touring, a little racing and a little commuting, it's a jack of all trade but not a master of any. That's ok and would have been good if marketed that way, but Bajaj went straight with the anti-RE campaign and I think it did hurt sales. Also, Shumi is right, if Bajaj wanted a tourer why the power cruiser design? Also what is going to happen if Bajaj comes out with a 400cc Avenger or some new cruiser developed alongwith Triumph.

Ill rather have domi 250 purely for touring.
    Here's why
    1)it costs almost 60k less then classic350 & 45k less then domi400
2)tubeless tyre's are must on long distance touring.
    In case of classic 350,
buyer have to pay 10-12k extra for alloy wheels with tubeless setup over bikes costs
(In case your spoked wheel get puncture then replacing tyre is not an easy job anymore as ABS & all bits&nacks are connected to wheels.
There is an option, where you can opt for steel tubeless spoke wheels. But it will cost you atleast 20k )
3)i would prefer hard panniers over soft luggage for long distance touring because of safety reasons
& only RE which looks good with hard panniers is Himalayan.
    4) installing hard panniers & replacing spoked wheels with alloys on classic350 is like removing soul from that bike

Owning the Duke 390 BS6 since last 3 weeks! The bike is Damn🔥. Acceleration is brutal specially for me because I upgraded from a Honda Aviator 😅. But not the kind of bike you would like to use on daily basis specially in the city, the milage is low, the bike tends to heat up easily in traffic. The other issue is the ground clearance specially with the BS6 models. But overall it's the kind of bike you would always enjoy riding and the best part is the Quickshifter+ it does jerk sometimes and sometimes it just works flawlessly maybe because the 1st servicing is due, there is vibration though while riding in the the city you may felt it often as you have to ride it low gears but overall the experience is good till now hope for the best in future!🤞

Both the Bajaj dominar and RE classic 350 are great motorcycles for touring with different flavor. The dominar looks modern, its fast and comfortable but its not comfortable on city traffic also its less refined to. Where as the Royal Enfield feels very good in the city, yes its not exciting to ride on the high way as compared to the dominar 400 but it get its job done. In the city the RE engine feels so relaxed and refined, i known this because i my self uses a meteor 350. The bike feels effortless to Ride in city traffic where as on the dominar its not easy. It depends up on our choice whether you wan fast motorcycle like dominar or a slow and relaxing like a classic .
The dominar is mostly well suited for highways. It can do city commutes but we need hard where as the classic its very good at both highway and city conditions, has ride quality, its fuel efficient and they are motorcycles that can be easy to live with.
Thanks guys for doing this amazing video. It was realy usefull video 🤩🤩😎

If the classic 350 was significantly cheaper, then it would've made a lot of sense. As it is pretty expensive, i will go for the dominar. The Dominar is a stable powerful bike. It is hard to handle in the city make no mistake about that. But the sound, brakes, tubeless supported 17 wheels and better features makes me move towards the 400.

A newbie Dominar owner here. 2023 May . If I had watched this podcast I wouldn't even try dominar firstly but fortunately I did the opposite and looks like it turned out to be a good decision to me. I feel he should present his ideas which would touch the larger audience that is the first time buyers. For them this is heavenly. I rode RE and in the first rev itself I decided am not going for it. It might be a good bike but when you look at the use case of the Dominar, it is built for highways and I have riden it in Bangalore roads and cannot describe the emaculate experience I got. Cruising at 110 is very easy on this which you can't do in RE. You don't have the fear of braking because of its dual channel ABS. The ride position suits for long rides with all the accessories given in stock . I was following all the spy shots and details of speed 400 and harley but I still felt domi is a much better machine for me in highways.

Having owned the dominar for 4 years now and ridden for 30k+ kms, I agree with some of the criticism w.r.t slow speed riding and handling it in traffic situations, but on the highway it’s quite good and is fairly comfortable over long distances. The only main sore point has always been the gearbox, it’s noisy and clunky, even though there aren’t any false neutrals or bad shifts it just doesn’t feel smooth or refined. Also mine being the early model initial services were a nightmare.

I have ridden both these bikes extensively...the first gen Domi and the old classic 350...What you guys has said is true...ride quality is on stiffer side on Domi and its steering is front heavy...on some occasions you simply wish to ride on an easy riding bike like the classic...its easily flickable...and you get to slowly enjoy the views listening to the slow thump...
