After playing Miss Kitty in 569 episodes of Gunsmoke, Return to Dodge was Amanda Blake's last time playing the character. She passed away two years after the film was released.
Its crazy that they never hooked up, even when Matt retired from being Marshal, since him being a Marshal was the reason he never hooked up with her! Originally, Kitty was supposed to be the mother of Matts child, but this had to be scrapped due to Amanda Blakes death. They should have ended the series with one TV movie, as soon as they knew the show was cancelled(1975), to give all the characters a good send off. Matt and Kitty retire and get married, while Doc passes away from old age after one final adventure with the gang. While other long recurring characters could get moments to shine or be referenced(due to dead actors e.g Sam's actor died in 1973), keep the focus on the original trio - Matt, Kitty and Doc, since they were there from the very first episode. Even if we could get an animated movie wrapping up the series with new voice actors to copy the originals voices, that could be great. This brilliant show deserved a finale.
Absolutely agree with you that was nonsense to end the series the way they did..we the people still love those series and James and Amanda still living on our hearts...that was pure love in between them. I believe in heaven and in ,my heart l feel they are together again forever with the blessings of the lord almighty

What about after The Long Branch closed at night and Mat was seen walking upstairs with Miss Kitty to her room? I'm sure they weren't playing checkers or cards.
The producers of GUNSMOKE -- couldn't afford to have a loving romance between MATT and KITTY , because it would mess up the storylines they wrote for the show - they only wanted them to be close friends.Even after the series - in this movie return they forbad it.
James Arness was a blonde in real life, dyed his hair for gunsmoke. There was a movie that Amanda had starred in about 3 or 4 years before gunsmoke, James had two walk-on parts, no lines. He was a true blonde.
Even with all of her health problems, Amanda Blake was beautiful right up 'til the end.

And John Mantley was too cheap to have Ken Curtis return. I would have brought back Dennis Weaver also.

There seemed to be a subtle nuance between them that the viewers can guess. Are they or aren't? It's all good either way. That's what made it so good.
Poor Amanda Blake, died of pneumonia due to AIDS in 1989 at only 60 years old. Years of heavy cigarette smoking I’m sure did not help either.
I hated the ending of this movie. Never got closure for these two characters. Amanda Blake died the next year.
