Hi mikes, I used HCL 30% to get rid of the gunks inside my W202 expansion tank, it works with 10% success then I tried soap, chlorine, kerosene and wd40 with no success. I used ultrasonic cleaner with just hot water, it removed 50% of the brown residue ! Then I added some Branson cleaning solution I found it in hand inside the expansion tank and the solution turns to brown again. I ended up with just few spots of light brown stains in the concealed area of the level float in side the tank, I am happy of the results.
I was wondering if you could find transparent white spray paint and paint over it, it might work , I think frosted white spray paint will work but I would clear coat over it , going to try it out myself . Great video .
Ideally, you need top be able to see through the plastic of the header tank to be able to see whether your coolant is at the right level. If you paint and clear coat it that might limit your ability to see through the plastic. Mike
Hi Mike. We made it back, but no sign of the car. They are saying the radiator repair will take a little longer than expected. Anyway we are heading up country tomorrow but will be back in Bristol at the end of the month. I’ll keep in touch.
Yep agreed. As pointed out in the video if the plastic has yellowed due to age, no amount of chemicals will fix that. Sonic Solutions did do a good job of cleaning the tank though. Mike
Thanks for your comment. You are right, not everyone notices the question mark (?) in the title which makes it appear a bit 'click baity'. This video is a response to the "How To Clean & Restore Coolant Tank - PERMANENTLY" which has 7.2million views and purports to be able to restore a coolant tank to new looking. My video makes it clear (no pun intended) that it is not possible to restore aged plastic with the method shown in that video. Mike

Thanks for your comment. Ultrasonic cleaning worked best for me too. I’ve not heard of Branson cleaner but will give it a try next time. Mike

Ok. If you get stuck, I can put you in touch with repair people in Bristol. I got the impression they were pretty busy. Mike
This has been proven many times to not work . . . .
