Okay you just made me become an instant fan! I love gardening experiments. 🤗 Your ideas sound spot on and you’ve got the resources. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. Thanks for sharing.👍🏾
What are you doing with all the stalks from your sunflowers? That's many times more material that you could be adding back into your soil than just the seeds. If you press the seeds, you can get sunflower oil for many purposes and still have the solid output from the oil press to use for soil amendment, or chicken feed. There's a tremendous range of things we can do and grow to improve the health of our soil and the productivity of our gardens.
Hi there! You are absolutely right. We initially were intending on trying that with this mill but it was too small. We will be investing in a bigger mill in the future so we can do exactly that. There is so much we are finding we can do with sunflowers that we will be experimenting with. We appreciate you giving us some valuable advice! Do you grow sunflowers?
You can eat the sunflower seeds. A big waste to recycle them back to earth. Sunflower seeds were highly prized item by the native Americans. I guess times have changed.
Appreciate the comment! We do that as well and along with utilize it for animal feed which in turn gives back in so many ways. What we have found with owning our first farm in today’s age is that you need to be creative and resourceful. We also have the ability to sell at market. Milling them is just one of the many ways growing a plant like this on your property can be used as a resource to save or bring income into your property in form of sales. Is there a certain way you like to prepare them or just eat them straight off the plant? Thanks again for the comment!
@@MadAcreFarms Good to know you use the sunflower seeds in other ways. Looks like I misunderstood your video and took it to mean that you had grown a pile of sunflower seeds and turned it into fertiliser since you did not know what to do with it. I have a hierarchy of use for farm products. 1. Humans- Whatever can be eaten by humans should be eaten by humans 2. Next comes bovines, equines, sheep, goats- anything unsuitable in 1 goes to them if it is suitable for them. 3. Next is pigs, ducks, chickens for those items unsuitable for 1 and 2 4. Last is back to the soil if unsuitable for all the above. Normally I roast sunflower seeds, shell them and eat it. The Chinese are very fond of eating it this way so if you have Chinese in your area they may be interested. If they have a restaurant you could swap a meal for a few pounds of seeds!! If you can use the seeds you could swap them with eggs with someone who keeps chickens. This is high energy/protein food so you should be able to get quite a few eggs for a pound of seeds. The American Indians roasted it and then pounded it and took it with them on long hunting trips or when going to war. Not clear whether they shelled it first. I read about it in a book about how the Indians grew their crops but I can't remember the name of the book. Once it is mashed up I suppose you could use it to cook with it or use in salads. No doubt the internet has more ideas.
@jirik2435 great information! Truly appreciate the feedback, we definitely have some opportunity to give a clearer message on our videos. The hierarchy is very enlightening and worth us taking into consideration as well. Thank you again for taking the time to respond.
Hey there! We don’t have a link, we are just trying out a smaller mill to see if it would be something we want to invest in a larger one. We got it from that big website that sells everything 😊 once we get it tuned in we will be investing in a bigger unit. We will be sure to provide an update!
I love your resourcefulness and how you look to your farm to sustain your farm!
Thank you! We appreciate your support Toni!
That mill looks like a great addition 🤓 TFS your homemade fertilizer process!
Thank you!

Thank you!
You have plenty of great resources on your farm to help you make that black gold. You are right about compost being expensive. Great video.
Appreciate that! Thank you!
