Think of the scene where Phoebus has to convince Quasimodo to help him find The Court of Miracles, Phoebus says he won’t stand by while innocent people get massacred, Quasi says he’ll only help to repay Esmerelda’s kindness. The original story had to be toned down significantly to make it more child friendly and it still deals with heavy issues like lust, racism, and corruption. I just imagine someone reading the book (which does not have a happy ending, by the way) and going, "You know what? This would make a fantastic children's animated musical!" Still wish Quasi got the girl in the end, but it's a great movie. Definitely one of Disney's best!
