Thank you so much for making this review! I really hope this game type makes a come back. Townsmen VR has some similar movement controls like you're a hand and you pick things up. I was 9 when this game came out and me and my brother (15) would be fighting over who got to play and I would be praying he would go hangout with his friends. Still play this game today through abandonware. Love this game
Seeing the ending of this game was a childhood dream of me. I doubt I would've been able to make it work, but thank you for showing me what it would've been like.
quick tip: start planting and watering trees immediately in every land. Soon you reach a tipping point where the trees grow faster than you can harvest them. get your creature to water them too. Another tip is to find or generate wood miracles from the beginning of the game and never use them, just pass them through to the next level. I did this once and always managed to have a free supply of wood miracles.
When watering trees slow down time (alt+1) then every five seconds water the tree for one click not one second just one click and a sapling will sprout. By doing this you can grow up to 15 saplings with one water miracle. If you do this process on fertile ground (trees planted in fertile ground release a green mist when planted) the saplings will grow quickly without watering them. Use alt+2 to speed up time! I love this game
The Black & White games were my entire childhood. I have incredibly fond memories of them, even if I never finished this game. I look forward to watching the other videos you've made.
One thing I remember about this game was that when I was playing with the menu buttons I found a combination that always triggered the 'idle' conversations between the two helpers. The sad part is I've forgotten what the combination was but I know it was a specific combination of menu keys then exiting the temple. I loved doing that just so I could get a chuckle out of the helpers dialogues.
I remember playing this as a kid. I absolutely loved it, I remember a trick to maximizing your wood gain was by building a Norse wonder next to a relic (The result of the mentioned glowing rock) which made a Wonder be it's max size. Since a Wonder's power was based on its size, you could cast a single wood miracle and fill a storehouse.
I bought the P5 glove because I heard it was compatible with B&W. It controlled better than you might expect for the time, mostly the gesture mechanic actually worked! Eventually I got tired of my arm aching and went back to mouse though
Such a nostalgic game. Great review. I remember giving up when I was a kid after the third world. I downloaded the game a few days ago and made it to world 4 before deciding I wasn't having fun anymore, haha. The skirmish had so much potential.
I also quit on the 3rd world as a kid. Which is funny cause I used to call it my favorite game even though I would just repeat the first two worlds over and over again.
Fantastic video! Only thing I could complain about is some audio leveling issues and a premature cut here and there, but I already watched your latest video and you've improved! I learned of these games from a weird friend of my, he was strange. He showed me the game and said he was breeding the villagers in a separate area to make them wild people. I wish that was in the game.
The black & white forums have made it super easy. Basically just fan patch and making sure it’s set to run as admin by default gives you a pretty clean experience.
Great video! There's seem to be a hole in White boy video essays™ when it comes to some of the half obscure half famous titles, Lionhead is just too interesting to be slept on, congrats Erik!
Black & White was a truly innovative game, and I think for what it was, it was great. For all of its flaws, I periodically find myself itching to play it, and nothing else exists like it to scratch that itch - even though 23 years have passed since its release. It's such a shame that it's so difficult to get it to run. I always get halfway through the game before all of my saves start corrupting.
I remember both really enjoying the good parts and to this day I still remember how infuriating deforestation was. Even when you managed to deal with that it just leads to endless demand for children until there is no way to have enough resources. Actually not that different from reality I guess?
I'm making a black and white clone! It's 2D though lol, and there are no creatures :P yet! I would say the creature can be very useful in skirmish game, and actually essential especially to defend against enemy creatures. You can impress an entire village AFK just by letting the creature dance near them
can you number these ? i watched thru almost 10 minutes of the 3rd part confused but trying to follow along until i read the description and itd be ashame if someone dropped this series because of that.
This game was buggy, clunky and very repetitive. At the same time it was very innovative and I love it to this day, even if it's a pain to run on a modern system, then again it was a pain to run back in the day as well and I had to buy extra 128mb of ram just for this game. There's just something about petting a 70m tiger and then seeing him accidentally killing your villagers with big turds because he mistook the grain silo for the litter box.
The boat builder song will stay with you for the rest of your life.
20 years later in my 30s and I still randomly "eidle eidle eee"

Abandonware is great. It’s what I wink wink nudge nudge recommend. It’s a shame that only the fable games are still available in any form.

Good stuff thank you both for schooling me. That’s the cool thing about these older games is that there’s still things to learn.
@@erikmcswain No worries! This game is one of a kind. This game is way better played than watchws. Thanks again for the video!
@@dogwithnobones906 it’s true. I played the first 3 lands a billion times as a kid and used to call it my favorite game and it still has surprises.

Thank you so much!
You can download the game online still!
Great video Erik.
Great review! Even with its flaws this is a very memorable game.
Thank you! It’s such a unique experience even today.

what i wouldn't give to be able to get this game to run on my current pc.... i loved it so much as a kid.

I just watched this the other day and I was thinking the same thing haha still proud of it as a first attempt.
Loved this video, great job
Thank you so much I really appreciate it!
I absolutly love the game and really want to play it again but i already know it's gonna be a pain in the ass to get it to run on my pc ^^''

This game made me fall in love with PC gaming. It was not the best controlled and made me so confused. Still had a warm place in my gut.
Hey, did you read one of my tips about the dancing rocks? I swear I am the one who spread that tip
