Fable 2: Lionhead's Last Good Game
This is the seventh video of an ongoing retrospective review series on the games of Lionhead Studios and Peter Molyneux. This time we're looking at a game that in some circles who grew up with it is a classic and for others is a disappointing departure: Fable 2. A game I found myself enjoying to an extent..

I can't say Im very impressed but tell me your thoughts on it. As always thanks for watching!

Lionhead Legacy: A Black & White Retrospective Review
มุมมอง 6K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the first part of retrospective review series on the games and legacy of Peter Molyneux and Lionhead Studios starting with their first game Black & White going all the way to the final game he worked on Fable: The Journey. Each video will feature a blending of the history of the development with critique of the game. I will do videos on other topics as well but I've loved Peter's games ...
I miss black and white and black and white 2
I recently replayed fable 2 and it froze so consistently I almost gave up on it. Which is unfortunate because I really enjoyed it otherwise. The first and third never had that issue.
nice video! glad to know B&W videos are still going
You can't even play Fable to anymore it won't work it's stuck it freezes every time
About the whole bringing Tyke into the base game and playing with the advanced creature AI - nowadays this was done and is possible through a mod called "Black & White: Ultimate", created by Shane, administrator of the Black & White Discord server. Ultimate features many changes and improvements, such as: - Playing B&W and CI through a modded CI client (which is slightly more stable and has some bugfixes over the base game) - An optional Hard Mode, featuring highly improved enemy god AI, agressive creatures and some additional trigger, i.e. instant death when Lethys or Nemesis influence reach your Temple - Being able to use Tyke in the campaign (requires you to beat Hard Mode once to unlock) - The ability to select your own player color, based on ingame RGB sliders - The ability to select your own temple style (only the existing ones from campaign and skirmish modes) - Optional settings to select your stating tribe, as well as being to randomize all villages and their miracles Overall, ever since I learned about its existence, Ultimate is now my go-to choice for playing Black & White, I'd highly recommend checking it out, it adds a lot of fun additions, and the Hard Mode is genuinely scary, well, as a good god anyway. If you're evil, the strategy mostly remains the same as in the original game.
I’ve heard about it haven’t had the chance to sit down and play it for myself!
My brother made a modded version of Creature Isle that has more villages to rule and two obscenely powerful enemy AIs that keep fucking with both the player and the Brotherhood trial-givers. It's genuinely a blast.
can you make video to show us how to install the game on windows 11 , or tell us where we can download it
I bought the P5 glove because I heard it was compatible with B&W. It controlled better than you might expect for the time, mostly the gesture mechanic actually worked! Eventually I got tired of my arm aching and went back to mouse though
I never got to play the first Black and White game, but I had Black and White 2 and it's expansion as a kid and it's still one of my favourite games I have played, I always hoped they would make a third instalment to the series but unfortunately that will never happen unless someone somehow manages to buy the IP to B&W
graphicaly its AMAZING
LOL I see so many of my filming and editing work in this video (from the Lionhead Video Diaries).
Thank you for your service. 🫡 That is so cool!
Im definitely excited to play a new god game made by wacky ol Peter but I'm not taking any of these mechanical promises even remotely seriously
Broadband was absolutely NOT widely available in the UK when Black and White came out. Similar to the US it was only easily available to students and in the center of some of the large cities. It was in Sweden and The Netherlands that broadband was broadly available at that time.
I was talking about Black & White 2 though and by 2005 Broadband was widely available.
Unity’s cancellation wasn’t to do with the MS deal, it was cancelled before I joined the studio in 2004 & the MS buyout was 2006. I really wish it had happened, Minter is a game dev hero of mine. Two games which did get killed because of the MS buyout were B&W games on the DS & PSP. IIRC they were more focussed on the creature, they were being done externally but we had builds to try on dev kits in the studio. There are a bunch of other LH projects which were cancelled or put on hold indefinitely - probably about the same number as we ever released.
@@thebag1981 Wow thanks a ton for your firsthand info and the correction. I’ll be doing an updated cancelled game video at some point and will be sure to include this. I did hear about those B&W games on the portables that’s cool.
What bow did it leave outside the fight with Jack for you? People have a Mandela effect remembering it being an ebony bow but I believe it's just yew.
are there any games that are atleast similar to b&w 2? I love this game and I wish I could forget and play again
This looks interesting. I... I have faith in Peter. He's a good, honest man, not like that sinister Todd Howard! Jokes aside, I respect Peter much more than Todd. He's certainly a far superior designer; he has many industry redefining titles to his name, whereas Todd stumbled into a position to benefit from the fruits of not only his forebears (Ted Peterson, Julian LeFay), but far more talented contemporaries who contributed to games almost despite his presence (Michael Kirkbride, Ken Rolston). I've doubtlessly forgotten much, but I recall the impression that Peter's falsehoods felt like the result of unchecked ambition and infectious enthusiasm, almost childlike, but Todd's lies are delicately crafted with malice aforethought, like a lawyer.
@@D--FENS With Peter it started out that way being mostly good intentioned but by the last 5 years of Lionhead (Milo Kinect shit) and the post Lionhead stuff he was definitely just straight up lying and not delivering any quality of product to make up for it
@erikmcswain it's sad to see how the media industries have infected these really passionate and artistic computer nerds. Man things were simpler 25 years ago.

The part where you said hearing Peter Molyneax and NFT game made your brain scrambled was pretty funny. Definitely can relate.
fable 2 is my childhood. I spent so much time on the minigame jobs to the point that they're a highlight for me. That's not a popular take, I know, but with hindsight it's clear to me now that it was related to my autism and the calming effect it had on me LOL Everything about the game was so stupid and wonderful that it sits next to dragon age origins in my all time favorites.
bro we are the same, dao is my life and at the time I destroyed the toolset, on fable 2 my favorite minigame was cut wood
Fable 3 upcoming?
Oh yeah making it right now and I have a ton of thoughts.
I've played through this game, no joke, 20+ times
Greatest tragedy was there was never a PC port. I'll never be able to play it again.
No no youre definitely able to, you just refuse to is all
@@themanwithnoname1839 Refuse to purchase an Xbox 360? I suppose so. Or is there another way? I hear there have been attempts at pirated PC ports but that they're pretty rough
Best hope right now is emulation. I’ve seen posts of people playing it and I would have thought about it too but it seems like it’s not perfect yet and there’s a little too much work involved for me to go that route especially since I have a series x.
I believe you can play it on PC via Game Pass Ultimate's cloud gaming service, though it requires a controller. This video is tempting me to upgrade from PC Game Pass for that very reason.
@@Easttowest45 I recommend you figure out how to set up emulation. It's super simple, and is a much better way to play compared to streaming it or even playing it natively(I own it on 360 and prefer to emulate it still). You can even use archon's toolbox to mod fable 2. On youtube there is a channel named Guy who has a few good tutorials. If you've ever emulated before, Xenia shouldn't be an issue, it's super user friendly. You could always try game pass ultimate, but there will ALWAYS be an input delay and screen smearing, regardless of how good your internet is. Game passes streaming just isn't that great, hell sometimes it can't even download your profile. PSnow is leagues better, but sadly will never have fable 2
Fable and fable 2 are legendary.
Been wanting black and white 3 since my childhood man… good memories with lionehead
9:57 I can't get the ballista challenge to work :( the ballista always goes haywire and any minimal movement on my cursor brings it completely down. The aiming is completely spastic. Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this? Thank you!
Imo their first bad game
I mean, he made so many great games! If he could have just shut up about ridiculous features and stopped overpromising on everything, we wouldn't be so mad.
of course you side with dean you sound homosexual
Nothing wrong with boobies especially since they're going now and all we have are fugly characters
I just want everyone to know that I bought Black and White 2 back in the day. This is your fault
Fable two was my intro to the series it was great still the best one
Fable 1 probably has the best time in the world no guns or ancient gods trying to destroy the world and probably the best villain Jack of blades. Fable 2 honestly has the best art style even three still uses it with it having probably the best atmosphere. Fable 3 is my favorite I understand it might be the most hated however it has the best story and probably the best ending outcomes even beating 2 including better characters with Walter and jester compared to hammer in the second.
Nothing wrong with liking Fable3 for the game that it was, I loved the weapon evolving system, even if it was flawed on how it worked, and the more slightly toned down evil morph in the game. Because the horns making you basically bald for me, felt way too much and annoying at times. But I could still see the charm of it. The world felt more alive, because of our actions at the end of the game was more impactful, than what the choices in Fable2 had, because was so few of them. Main menu, though annoying at times, I loved because it sort of allowed you to slow down for a moment, and you could see your inventory and things more immersed, than just small 3d models spinning at a flat screen, so to speak. Ohhhh, and the Gnomes coming alive, instead of Gargoyle heads, was a thing I found hilarious and loved it
@@NightBane345the decisions at the end of fable three included "oh no the hero fucked up and lots of us died now there are simply less npc's in the world now which you can easily replace by just buying the house or shop they left behind"
I never played Fable 2 while being the biggest Fable fan. But this console exclusivity was so disgusting that it really cemented my opinion that I should never buy an Xbox, as I did in the end. I hope it was worth it to diminish the reputation of the whole series by ripping the communities apart just to sell Microsoft more consoles.😊
I mean it always was an Xbox exclusive on console. I’m guessing you’re referring to there being no PC port which is fair it could have benefitted from one
Slow Time was my favorite crutch in this game.
Fable 2 was definitely a great step in the right direction, you can tell the intention of the game was to emphasize all the stuff that was meant to be in the first game. It's a shame that the core development team had pretty much abandoned it after this game, mainly those from Big Blue Box Studios.
Yeah I was honestly surprised that Simon and Dene Carter stayed at Lionhead basically until the end considering what happened to their studio.
fable 2 was soo good. unfortunately i got rrod just after my first playthrough. i didnt even know you could get new hair so my character was bald af. i wish i could do a new playthrough but as a pc gamer im fd (yes i saved the dog)
fable 2 is to this day one of the most fun games ive ever played. I absolutly adore this game. its a capital crime that it is the only one without a PC port. id sacrifice my sister to the sword of aeons to get a PC port
😂
Im ngl fable 3 is my favourite by far idk why I know it’s the worst made but it’s so fucking fun
Nothing wrong with enjoying something more than everyone else. I think it has some awesome ideas.
Disagree with it being that superior to the first one, I think it is more nuanced than that. 1: The controls feel more janky to me. Full disclosure, I never played the second game back in the day. But I recently replayed the first which did not hold up to fond memories and then this one and I think that the controls and physics are actively more frustrating. I am watching you put down those roads smoothly though and wondering it if is more me. I've already tinkered with frame rates and mouse sensitiviely enough though, I barely had to touch those in the first game and reviews from the time do complain about how frustrating placing things or interacting with them is. There are times the cursor feels like it is jumping or is very rigid and it actively makes the experience far more frustrating for me than the obscene difficulty of the original did. That I can't do things while the game is paused or slow down the speed to compensate for this like in the original only irritates me more. 2: This is more a personal preference, but performing miracles to get people to believe in you made me feel a lot more like a god than sending out armies or getting people to migrate to my over developed city. The bigger more destructive miracles are nice but the actual means of taking territory/population is so pedestrian. So MORTAL. I especially find the good method egregious. I am aiming for a neutral play through, so I can city build and conquer, but FFS half the map ends up joining my city before I can muster a good army. I have to pick hovels and not build temples. It locks you into playing one way or the other, instead of letting you do a little of both. Of course I can capture those settlements and repopulate them but it is so tedious... 3: You already mentioned the lack of squirmish or multiplayer, but it really is the one thing that makes it inferior to the original. If it had it, I would probably consider it the superior game, if barely. 4: Least of all, and also mentioned, is that it tries to be both a city builder and a real time strategy game, on top of being a God game and a pet trainer, and kind of fails at all four. That is a critique you could levy at the original, but I felt it way more here with the additional features that felt like they cut into or undermined what was already undercut in the original. There are other complaints, but they either fit into one of those four points (I'd like to play as a civilization other than the Greeks, but this could have been fixed with squirmish/multiplayer) or just aren't as relevant as them.
@@deplorabledegenerate2630 Hey can totally understand this perspective. Of course it’s always gonna be a little more nuanced than the flag planting takes I make but that’s the price I pay for deciding to form a rhetorical argument based on how I felt playing the game haha. For me the original is more of a sick combination of individual tech demo type ideas that is super interesting and a product of a bygone era where innovation was actually valued by critics, consumers, really the industry as a whole and I will always always respect and love it. In theory I probably would have wanted a more fleshed out version building off of some of the better ideas of the original but they decided to make a more conventional game with conventional ideas and for me based on the current playthroughs with the games we have I preferred the gameplay loop even though you perfectly pointed out the flaws with it. That opinion can always change. Anyways thank you for this awesome insightful and thoughtful comment.
@@erikmcswain I wouldn't worry about planting flags, people like what they like. The first was too ambitious for its own good and the second made the smart choice of playing it a little more safe. Which in some ways does work to its benefit. Both could have stood more time in the oven, that much we can all agree on. I think given the time it came out a multiplayer function could have turned it into the more memorable of the two, it would have has steep competition but I could see me and my dumbass friends wasting way more time on this one than the first. And to satiate your curiousity from the first Black and White's video, yes, it was as chaotic and insane of a mess in multiplayer as you think it was. A nice change of pace from Starcraft and Quake but for whatever reason it always felt more personal in Black and White when you'd start up and immediately that one jackass (me) would start throwing rocks and fireballs at your stuff from across the map. No one aims good in Black and White but eventually one of them is going to hit something important and when you've just started the game and that happens it is a uniquely infuriating experience.
@deplorabledegenerate2630 haha I don’t plant flags for others don’t worry. I think on it after my playthrough and it helps keep me focused and helps get some good conversations flowing in the comments. I do stand by my takes but I know it’s all subjective and while I might like something more there’s plenty of nuance and reasons for someone else to like the first more. I agree thought multiplayer in 2 could have been so much fun and super chaotic it really is such a missed opportunity. I only played some games using Hamachi in like 2012-2013 or something with people on the fan forum and it was such a blast those couple times.
i truly like yo style man, the way ya structure ya vids is nice to listen to and we can truly hear your passion for em games o' Lionhead. I sincerely hope F3 isn't gonna break ya m8 .
@@TheRKG1337 haha I promise it’s not breaking me it might be the most interesting game in the series to talk about despite its flaws.
I always loved that Lionhead intro. Showing off the physics engine and being really damn unsettling at the same time.
I always had a issue with games where they impart how important your decisions are, simple and binary as they can be but the game doesnt adequatly showcase the impact of them often enough or they are the kind of decisions that do not impact things till a lot of time has passed cannonically which most games do not do that kind of time skip. I will say tho the music and cutscenes in the game are just great, i always love the etheral and mysterious music theyve had in these games, especially that intro choir
It’s always been one of the big gimmicks that hasn’t really been figured out. Some ways of doing it work better than others. I definitely want to do a wider exploration choice and endings in gaming. That’s one of the things I’m most curious about with the reboot. I agree though the music is so special it’s the most consistent thing about Lionhead games lmao.
19:45 "You can't really be purely a mage due to how fast you run out of mana..." Whoa whoa WHOA, did you forget about mana potions? It's not very difficult to stock up on them. I seem to remember some items giving faster mana regeneration to help some with that as well (or was it a skill/attribute thing? I know it's there somewhere, been a while). Pure caster is overpowered. Go through spamming high level enflame with an occasional Infernal Wrath/Divine Fury while chugging mana potions and just try to tell me it isn't the easiest, breeziest way to play the game. Beyond that some spells like lightning are also good and have the potential for stunlocking enemies. But enflame specifically turned all of the areas that were a slog on all of my other playthroughs/builds (like the arena) into a breeze, there's nothing like it for ease and power fantasy. This is especially important to convey for people who might like the game for reasons other than the combat and just want to get through combat as fast and easy as possible.
The mana regeneration never really gets to a point where you don’t have to stock up on mana potions to actually only use it. I do agree though that it works for the pure power fantasy and note that in my Fable 2 video when criticizing the implementation of magic there.
@@erikmcswainRight, I think mana regeneration only helps to a certain point, but usage of mana potions is a small price to pay regardless. It's easy to get tons of potions. The wording in the vid made it sound like pure caster isn't feasible, which is what I took issue with because someone who wants to be a pure caster might be turned off by statements like that. See I'm doing it again, "Guys seriously! Pure caster is good, mana potions aren't a problem!" XD No hate, I'm enjoying the series! I'm here after seeing your Black and White 2 video. Thanks for the vids!

@@erikmcswain What I've seen from the trailers, with the guy sitting there, talking about some other heroine, for me, felt off. British humour can be difficult to get right in a way, even if you're British yourself. But I do hope they get it right, and I laugh whole heartedly as I did with the humour from all the games. But as said, trailer felt off for me, with the guy talking, felt more as them trying to hype up some random character, rather than jokingly hype up us, the playable character.
