God Damn, this game was awesome in virtually every way. I wish I could go back in time and Kickstart this. I'm honestly tempted to buy a second copy. It is worth WAY more than $15.
Charles Jones yeah dude if I had known anything I would have put enough money in to get a ghost character at Least. Dung Beetles are my favorite insect. So mine would have been a much smaller Dung Beetle. That was an Alchemist who liked to live with the Mushroom People.
Each special moment in this game is worth the entire price of the game, all by themselves. Sitting on a bench in Dirtmouth. Being bowed to by the Mantis Lords. When you find out why it's called the City of Tears. When you beat the Trial of the Fool. Each of those moments could be fifteen dollars. There's so much content, that even after 65 hours, I still want to go back for more. Just an incredible video game and a fantastic example of video games as art. This masterpiece deserves a perfect, dunkey sealed, five out of five.
@@mayamelodyegg1607 yeah I was wondering the same thing, is he talking about sitting on the bench when quirrel talks about the blue lake above it? Or is it cause it got sealed off and everyone got infected or starved to death. I would venture the second but I think it was called City of Tears before then
I love the music to Hollow Knight. It's extremely atmospheric and absolutely beautiful, everytime I listen to any one of the soundtracks again, it just reminds me of how much I love playing this game
I was stuck in the Path of Pain for 3 days, and then I died in the last room, now I got a see-through TV screen(for theatrical purposes only, no TV or controller was harmed, only my thumb). Path of Pain's theme(Radiance) changes as you are progressing, it really reflects your own determination and the meaning of the challenge; never lose hope, never give up, even it was for nothing. No pain, no gain, in the end it was totally worth it.
When I was fighting them, I was like "Oh, too bad I have to kill them, they are so badass and they dont just jump on you when you show up, they wait to be provocked !" And at the end of the battle... I was stunned (like IRL stun, not in game) !
After that challenge I couldn't make myself to harm anyone of the mantis people. One thing is to kill dead husks for Geo and another is to kill proud intelligent creatures.
OMG, someone who agrees w/ me, i was so mad when i found out >:( I personally like cuphead soundtrack but on a scale to 1 to 10 cupheads at 7/10 and hollow knight at 700/10
Well cuphead was also very impressive, and it had a lot of variety and personality with each boss.. also the music was actually played at that speed which is also an achievement. In saying that, i much prefer this soundtrack though.. nothing I have ever heard has matched the tone.
I think my favorite part about this game is its ability to tell its story without ever really telling you. It breaks the story into suggestive pieces and lays them out for you to find along the way. It rewards players curious about the story, without annoying those who are not. By the end of the game, everyone is satisfied. It’s the best kind of storytelling.
Problem with that statement, I feel, is that the term 'metroidvania' implies you are going to get abilities to help you progress through and access new areas. In Souls, you don't really do that, you just level up, get better mechanics and gear as you play, and beat bosses with enough persistence. Of course, I could be wrong about that.
You do get literal keys that serve to unlock zones and leveling/gearing up still earns you abilities that help you progress even if combat is the main challengs.
@@SilentSputnik not necessarily. You can look at games like Unepic that are certainly Metroidvanias but have literally zero movement options. It's not about movement itself anyway, just about gradual unlocking of areas. Even in Metroid most of the upgrades were only useful to unlock specific doors and close to useless otherwise.
There has been a year and a half since I first played this game, and listening to this music revives the feeling of the game. it's weird, I don't even remember an specific part of my gameplay… I just, "feel" the game when I listen to this music. Damn, this game was so fun and frustrating and beatiful… I love it.
*My favorites* What are your favorites? White Palace - (53:39) Hornet - (12:34) Queens Garden - (39:53) City of Tears - (18:46) Green Path - (8:57) Resting Grounds - (37:41)
Apparently the answer is YES! I don't know the station number but I imagine it was a college station (I live in the Boston area). It wasn't the only thing the station plays - I was driving home very late & just scanning through the stations to keep me awake & came across it. Just did a quick search & it might be WZBC in Newton.
the music is a huge part of why this game is so good for me! really helped build the world and atmosphere up! i almost cant imagine this game with any other music!
Fantastic OST, seriously! It was one of the things that caught my attention when searching about this game, i believe that says a lot cause how often do we consider music as a decisive factor for choosing games. Dirtmouth theme brought tears to my eyes, and i just barely played the game at that point.
If you listen to Larkin's Other music, it's very different. He mentioned something about it being very unique to produce music for a game genre based off the joy of world discovery. I've always wanted to compose video game music, but I've never quite found the genre that my style worked off of. This Soundtrack encapsulates the theme of Hollow Knight Perfectly, and is also quite impressive how many details went into the music itself (for instance, almost the entire soundtrack is in C major or C minor. The few pieces that break this are the "important" pieces like Sealed Vessel).
My favorite game now. So much content, such engaging lore, incredible boss fights and exploration... I'm so happy that it has gotten some of the recognition it deserves. Can't wait for Silksong
My friend convinced me to get this game the other day and I am absolutely in love with it. From the gameplay to the music to the art style to the landscapes everything is so beautiful.
Sealed Vessel is the most epic song in history of videogames. It shows a tragedy, and a choise... Love Hollow Knight forever. A real orchestra of videogames.
Sealed vessel is so genius we all knew what had happened to the hollow knight as soon as 1:00:10 hit... had dudes crying in the 'last' boss fight instead of trying to kill the boss....
1:00:12 When the Hollow Knight is crawling after you desperately trying to attack and you can just lazily dodge it. When a game can make you feel pity for the final boss you know it's doing something right.
Resting Grounds was so simple and short yet it stirred so much in me. It's always a trip getting back into real life after you get so into a game like this. I'm gonna be feeling 'hollow' myself when I finally finish beating this game, masterpieces like this do not come around very often.
Man, the resting grounds has got to be the most spine-chilling place, the souls of the people in there, the moth, oh the moth, to think she was a true believer of the radiance, and how she passed away. I gotta tell you, not even dark souls has a story so heart-breaking as this one.
Dude, when just listening to the soundtrack of HK like this, i'm legit fighting back tears. :') Each and every song is a masterpiece in and of it's own, but the added emotional value of having actually played through the whole game + the music is the limit breaker for those waterworks, man.
53:40 This soundtrack is just amazing, everything about this game just reflects the passion and love of the developers.. I've always thought a game's music said a lot about the quality of the game, and I was right. It just gives you a sense of belonging and nostalgia after you play through all the content, leaving you with emptiness... It reminds me of the first time I beat Dark Souls, and watched as the credits rolled. Bravo Team Cherry.
This game's music is so good! It's also really interesting to look through the comments and see what other people's favorite songs are. Personally, i really like Greenpath And Crystal Peak.
Just picked up this game, and it's absolutely amazing. The atmosphere and the music and the characters and literately everything is absolutely beautiful. It's quite challenging but it really makes me feel accomplished when I do achieve something.
I don't know how late I am to this fandom, but recently I started playing Hollow Knight, and it was AWESOME!! I haven't even gotten to Hornet yet, but I've watched other people play it. It's a masterpiece. A beautiful masterpiece.

can you believe that ori and the will of wisps and hollow knight: silksong are coming out? unexpected sequels to my favorite games
God Damn, this game was awesome in virtually every way. I wish I could go back in time and Kickstart this. I'm honestly tempted to buy a second copy. It is worth WAY more than $15.
Update, I did buy a second copy, and gifted it to a friend. All hail Hallownest!
All Hail Hallownest!
I'm pretty sure there is a different saying, but I don't remember it! All Hail Hallownest!
Bought on PC and Switch. Worth every penny
Charles Jones yeah dude if I had known anything I would have put enough money in to get a ghost character at Least. Dung Beetles are my favorite insect. So mine would have been a much smaller Dung Beetle. That was an Alchemist who liked to live with the Mushroom People.
Sad that the only person that has mentioned this game who is popular is Dunkey. This game deserves SO much praise.
Just wait for the switch version. The game has a good chance to blow up.
Vinny from Vinesauce just finished playing this, that's how I heard about it
In France, we have got MisterMV.
Hérisson Siffleur i watched MisterMV's The End Is Nigh gameplay, but i didn't knew he played Hollow Knight! *boi*
like the switch controls ;P
The greatest metroidvania ever made
I wouldn't say the greatest as I haven't played that many metroidvanias, but I definitely agree that this is a phenomenally good game.
Excluding classics like Super Metroid, yeah I agree. A phenomenal game!
@@jamez62982 hollow knight is better than metroid imo

UNDERSTATEMENT!!
This is hands down my favorite game! And I’ve played LOADS of games
My peabrain forgot, why's it called the city of tears again??
@@mayamelodyegg1607 yeah I was wondering the same thing, is he talking about sitting on the bench when quirrel talks about the blue lake above it? Or is it cause it got sealed off and everyone got infected or starved to death. I would venture the second but I think it was called City of Tears before then
I love the music to Hollow Knight. It's extremely atmospheric and absolutely beautiful, everytime I listen to any one of the soundtracks again, it just reminds me of how much I love playing this game
Crystal peak is so good with that bass

Hollow knight is easily one of my favourite games of all time and I still havent fucking beaten radiance ._.
Note: Sealed Vessel's slow part plays during the Path of Pain, and not Radiance
You know what? I STILL feel like this game hasn’t been given it’s fair share of praise, even after all this time. That’s how good it is.
I agree, I never heard about this *once*
I only saw it on gamepass a week ago, loved it
My hearth breaks with Soul Sanctum every time. Holy molly what a good piece....
Arvangath VGM I know something about it I was looking for a comment about it and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels that way ❤️
So ominous and chilling
i remeber i went there a bit too fast and got destroyed XD
ayyy fellow soul sanctum lovers! the organ music makes it terrifying, it's amazing
Mantis Lords fight, oh boyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
I felt like such a beast doing that fight with the music in the background
When I was fighting them, I was like "Oh, too bad I have to kill them, they are so badass and they dont just jump on you when you show up, they wait to be provocked !" And at the end of the battle... I was stunned (like IRL stun, not in game) !
After that challenge I couldn't make myself to harm anyone of the mantis people. One thing is to kill dead husks for Geo and another is to kill proud intelligent creatures.
I love the game but those god damn mantises!
Lunar Guard well if try to deepnest, they will close the door in front of you, so they provoking you as first
Ok lets be real. The Dung defenders theme sounds like he has such a great time fighting you
he truly is

I love how each area theme has a more intense part that it can fade to whenever you take on one of the really difficult enemies.
Absolute joke that Cuphead won the vote for a better soundtrack than this. Even NecroDancer, another nominee!
OMG, someone who agrees w/ me, i was so mad when i found out >:(
I personally like cuphead soundtrack but on a scale to 1 to 10 cupheads at 7/10 and hollow knight at 700/10
Cuphead has a fantastic gameplay and i love both games but you just cant approach me and tell me that cuphead has a better soundtrack
Well cuphead was also very impressive, and it had a lot of variety and personality with each boss.. also the music was actually played at that speed which is also an achievement. In saying that, i much prefer this soundtrack though.. nothing I have ever heard has matched the tone.
All 3 are 10/10, only one can win. Just the way it is.
Gacku I mean, the only problem I had was that Hollow Knight wasn't even NOMINATED
Something I love about the area themes is that they get tense when you're fighting a strong enemy. It's a really good way to warn the player.
I've completed hollow knight yesterday. I feel so empty now :s
you mean, hollow?
Patrick Bonczyk I was literally thinking these exact words but I was 2 months late
Don't worry theirs going to be a second game! :)
@@DGamingSh Wait, for real?
@@thamonito I may be a bit late but yeah. the "hornet dlc" is actually a full new game called silksong

That last track. Wow. Absolutely stunning.

If Metroid-Souls-Vania is indeed a thing, Hollow Knight just became the GOLD standard...
Souls are basically just 3d metroidvania so this part is absolutely unnecessary.
@@Spellweaver5 Certainly not a metroidvania. You get radically different movement options in those.
How the heck was this game made by 4 people it’s masterful
I didn't know about the game. Not even a minute passed and I'm in love with the soundtrack and I'm searching to buy this game.
This soundtrack is truly gorgeous
Understatement!!
I played Hollow Knight for the first time yesterday, and I fell in love with it immediately :D
I love how the Broken Vessel music sounds. It’s like a more intensely mixed version of the final track, and I LOOOVE it
Greenpath is definetly my favorite area. Very serene, the leaf-walking animation is super satisfiying and the music is just beautiful.
White Palace - (53:39)
Hornet - (12:34)
Queens Garden - (39:53)
City of Tears - (18:46)
Green Path - (8:57)
Resting Grounds - (37:41)
I personally really enjoy the main theme, Dirtmouth theme, mantis lords, greenpath and hornet
@@crispedhades9907 Those first three bring back memories when I was playing the game!
ALL OF THEM.
I love how the Greenpath song picks up by the end and completely transforms into a hype song from a chill melody.
the soundtrack most definitely drew me in and kept me there for this game. beautiful
I haven't played video games since the 80s - I was listening to a radio station last night that played this. GORGEOUS!!!!
There are stations that play video game music?
Apparently the answer is YES! I don't know the station number but I imagine it was a college station (I live in the Boston area). It wasn't the only thing the station plays - I was driving home very late & just scanning through the stations to keep me awake & came across it. Just did a quick search & it might be WZBC in Newton.
Judy Maggs and you fell asleep :') that soundtrack could not keep you awake it's so relaxing ( also sorry for my bad english)
What station actually plays good music?
Sorry pal, but I don't believe it.
You're missing out on videogames bud!
Queens gardens...it makes me want to dash through mid air, like I'm trying to get somewhere quickly. And it's serene...I can't explain it

I literally can't listen to Sealed Vessel without a waterfall bursting out of my eyes. I feel bad for The Hollow Knight but, it had to be done.
My son plays this game, and while looking at a couple of game play videos, we saw this soundtrack one. OMG....stunning music!
the music is a huge part of why this game is so good for me! really helped build the world and atmosphere up! i almost cant imagine this game with any other music!
i never realized how empty Dung Defender sounds like without "Doma, Doma! domadomADOMA!!"

Mafius I believe you're referring to 37:40
Love the OST and the game. A really "Must Have" for all Metroidvania lovers.
The last 3 minutes of Sealed Vessel are sublime
I can't stop playing this or listening to this soundtrack. I don't know what I'll do with my life after I'm done.
Queen's Garden is just beautiful. Gives me some Witcher 1 Lakeside vibes.
The Sealed Vessel track is the most powerful to me: The moment when it changes at 1:00:07 especially
The whole soundtrack is just amazing but Dung Defender is my favourite, sounds so adventurous, happy and epic at the same time :D
When I first reached this part, I just sat my controller down and nearly cried, this game is such a flood of emotions. So many good memories :)
The game, the soundtrack... just wow.
Wow indeed!
1:00:12 When the Hollow Knight is crawling after you desperately trying to attack and you can just lazily dodge it. When a game can make you feel pity for the final boss you know it's doing something right.
you ARE talking about the Hollow Knight, right? No other final bosses?
Resting Grounds was so simple and short yet it stirred so much in me. It's always a trip getting back into real life after you get so into a game like this. I'm gonna be feeling 'hollow' myself when I finally finish beating this game, masterpieces like this do not come around very often.
Very true. I'm pretty sure we are not gonna see another this good game in awhile.
The last track... Just wow...
So emotional...
dark souls casttlevania buckethead?
He didn't say its more emotional than those piss in a wooden spoon.
I'm sorry, but I can't listen to Queen's Gardens without hearing the squeaky platforms they drive me crazy
Reminds me Child of Light OST a lot!
oo ye
I wouldn't have thought of that, but yeah, it kinda does.
Each and every song is a masterpiece in and of it's own, but the added emotional value of having actually played through the whole game + the music is the limit breaker for those waterworks, man.
What a beast of a sountrack. One of the best for sure. A pleasure to the ears
That Nosk song has to be the best song I've ever heard. The Resting Grounds song is sad as hell. What a great game.
They really nailed this one
Lol

I see what you did there
One of the best soundtracks in gaming history.
This game just destroyed my expectations limits over and over! One of the years very finest!
A true indie achievement! :)
I don't know how late I am to this fandom, but recently I started playing Hollow Knight, and it was AWESOME!! I haven't even gotten to Hornet yet, but I've watched other people play it. It's a masterpiece. A beautiful masterpiece.
Hollow Knight was one of the mosy breathtakingly poetic experience of my life. I cannot find words powerful enough to describe how excited I am for Silksong.
