This is false. Methanol poisoning could have easily been done by accident not intent. Any tourist that goes overseas should have a heightened awareness of what they eat and drink, especially alcohol
Also, labelling specific tourists as dying from this is ingenuous. If 10 tourist die, then most likely 90 local people died of the same thing. It is the poor quality of alcohol that people should be wary of and many are
methanol is a by-product of distilling ethanol (the "safe" alcohol). The first few volumes of the distilled alcohol contain mostly methanol and need to be disposed of. This is why it is illegal in a lot of places to distill your own alcohol. Because people arent careful enough or dont know how to rid the product of the methanol. Incidentally, one of the treatments for methanol poisoning is to give someone a lot of ethanol (basically get them super drunk). This counteracts the toxicity of methanol which causes blindness and nerve damage. It is very sad and preventable to lose these beautiful young people to such a careless event, but more than likely it was not done intentionally or maliciously, and my guess is the owner of that hostel got his hands on some liquor he thought was a great deal but it turned out to be poison.

Unfortunately it's an extremely common occurrence. It's well known that cheap booze in poorer countries has more methanol and sometimes a dangerous amount. This can be from poor distillation or deliberate cost cutting. Hopefully international pressure will help the investigation to find out when these drinks were contaminated or adultered.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning are very similar to those of excess alcohol consumption ( central nervous system depression, headache, dizziness, nausea, lack of coordination, and confusion) so many who have ingested lethal doses (as little as 15 mL) of methanol may not seek immediate treatment, thinking they are simply intoxicated. Best prevention? Avoid alcohol consumption. Second best solution? Only drink from sealed, labeled containers preferably sold by established producers.

The whole thing happened in Laos, but many foreign media outlets reported the news in Thailand. It made people who don't know the truth about this matter think that Thailand is dangerous. The BBC intentionally damaged Thailand's image. I will tell the truth for many people who don't understand what happened. 1. Vang Vieng is in Laos, not Thailand. 2. Vang Vieng is not part of Thailand. 3. A tourist died in Laos. 4. Because the Lao medical system is not up to standard, they contacted the Thai doctors to take the remaining victims for further care. 5. Thailand is only the recipient of tourists who died from the Laos side. 6. The reason why there were fatalities on the Thai side is because Laos sent the patients too late, causing Thai doctors to not be able to treat them in time. 7. But the BBC lumped Thailand together with the whole story, leading to the issue of banning Thailand. 8. The Lao government tried to cover up all the news that happened. To blame Thailand 9. BBC must come out and tell the truth and take responsibility for the matter of generalizing Thailand with Laos 10. Thailand wants to demand justice from the world😢

Methanol can be present in alcoholic beverages as a contaminant. This can happen if the beverages are made from contaminated raw materials or if they are illegally produced. Methanol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic beverages is a serious public health problem in some parts of the world. This was not intentional. Methanol is also a normal product of the distillation process that produces ethanol, and in home-brew distilleries without strict controls - often found in poorer countries - it can end up in the mix.

Vendors add a small amount of methanol when they manufacture spirits Some vendors can add more than what is required to replicate alcohol effects or they add more methanol to alcohol that has already been spiked It can only take a tiny amount to go from buzzed to organ damage and blindness

5. Thailand is only the recipient of tourists who died from the Laos side.
6. The reason why there were fatalities on the Thai side is because Laos sent the patients too late, causing Thai doctors to not be able to treat them in time.

Vendors add a small amount of methanol when they manufacture spirits
Some vendors can add more than what is required to replicate alcohol effects or they add more methanol to alcohol that has already been spiked
It can only take a tiny amount to go from buzzed to organ damage and blindness
So basically a few case like this happened before -> they (the alcohol seller/producer) mistaken using ‘methanol instead of ethanol’ in the process of making/mixing. Please avoid blaming the whole country or the neighbor country like Thailand… no one wants this to happen. For safety, please drink from the trustworthy brand from the bottle.

These are methanol poisonings . Symptoms include a decreased level of consciousness , decreased physical ability , vomiting , abdominal pain , and a specific bad breath caused by breathing . Visual impairment can occur as early as 12 hours after exposure . Long-term symptoms include blindness and kidney failure . People that want to travel and see the world don't get drunk and partying like that they mingle with the local and learn about their culture. Partying and drunk like that is not asian culture it all about the money, money, money
We just need your money, money, money
We just wanna make the world dance
Forget about the price tag 😂😂😂
@@sue_shi7552 Europeans/Westerners dont do that for the most part because sub-consiosly many are conditioned to see the ''local people'' as less then and beneath the so called middle class Western tourist.
Laos is one of the most incredible places I've ever been. I was there for 2 weeks this July and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life. Laos is home to some of the kindest, most hard-working people I have ever encountered and it's natural landscape is unmatched. I realise these are important PSAs to young travellers, but hate to think people would consider Laos 'unsafe' or 'dangerous'. I'm wary of how these incidents and their reporting can give Laos a twisted and unfair reputation.
You're full of shit! RIP to all the young backpackers who died recently!
Good to hear you had a terrific stay.
Unfortunately, one only has to have one I'll advised experience to ruin your life.
Like what happened there...anything free is free for a reason, usually not a good one
When making ethanol it’s impossible to make methanol at the same time, ethanol is made of sugar and yeast , methanol is made by a chemical reaction between hydrogen and carbon-monoxide and a catalyst, not the same as condensing ethanol.
Everytime i go back home, I will bring alcohol from Australia for my dad. He says fake alcohol is sold everywhere. After living more than a decade in Australia, i feel paranoid about consuming food or drink in Vietnam. We only eat at restaurants that are popular among locals. The safety standard is very different from the west. So please be cautious if you travel to Asia.
When it comes to consuming alcohol stick to the genuine stuff.
Really, excess drinking is REALLY a bad idea. People will take advantage. For one.
I hit $113k today. Thank you for all the knowledge and nuggets you had thrown my way over the last months. Started last month 2024. Financial education is indeed required for more than 70% of the society in the country as very few are literate on the subject.
It's essential for you to have a mentor to keep you accountable. Myself, I'm guided by Evelyn Vera. for years and highly recommend her I focus on her. To be honest, I almost didn't buy the idea of letting someone handle growing my finance, but so glad I did.
I would really love to know how much work you did put in to get to this stage.
I will leave her info below this comment.

Girls!? ARE YOU IGNORING THIS?
It can happen anywhere around corner near you
This only happens to you if you go to poor filthy Third World Countries and drink toilet liquor.
More questions than answers
If you're going to drown yourself in alcohol like that, it's only a matter of time before it catches up with you. It doesn't matter if you're in Laos or anywhere else-your life will be affected. Take care of yourself
People forget it's still a drug, something dangerous at any time
Most young people are dumb. Brains not grown yet. I lived near a college. It was unpleasant.

For Americans; 30 ml = 1 oz. and 25 ml = .85 oz To put that in comparison to what we're used to when you got a bar here the standard pour is 1.5 oz - 2 oz.(45 ml - 60 ml). Methanol ain't no joke and it seems like the bars serving alcohol was cutting it with unregulated hooch made in somebody's house.
The joke is that most Americans do not have a good sense of ounces. We have a decent sense of quarts and pounds, but ounces are just too messed up. Ask an American how many ounces are in a quart or in a pound, and you'll likely get a shrug. The world assumes that Americans must be experts in imperial units, but we are actually better at measurement avoidance.
@@DemPilafian 16 oz in a pound. I'm older, and honestly, how many oz in a quart has never come up.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 The fact that you know how to use google does not refute my point.
Developed country issues (alcohol, cheaper costs, etc). It appears it’s related to alcohol. WHO does also not recommend consumption of alcohol and advocates lifetime abstinence. It appears the same WHO cautions about the dangers of drinks from that area.
Last dude interviewed is going to amount to so much in life….
why people still go to laos is beyond me
dont drink unregistered alcohol
Vang Vieng is a creepy small town and so gorgeous at the same times.
For everyones information, it is safe to travel here just please be vigilant. Note: please avoid alcohol if it is offer to you by a stranger.
for people who wanted more context: "Six tourists who were staying at a youth hostel in Vang Vieng, Laos, have died of methanol poisoning. The methanol was believed to be in contaminated drinks. Methanol - a colourless, tasteless liquid - is extremely toxic. As little as 60ml can be deadly - that's less than a triple UK shot of alcohol (ethanol)."
They died not only methanol poisoning, but Docters also suspected they consumed drugs called "yaba"

Their first mistake was going to this poor Third World country.
Laos and Thailand are trouble. Avoid drinks or even travel to those countries at all costs.
You seem coming for Thailand for this case.
Maybe that country has something your hometown lacking of? 😂
It happened in Loas and they sent patients to Thailand !, the bad is idiots problem. You can baught alcohol from 7-11 and Supermarket in Thailand and it imported from around the world. The trouble came to us ! We didn't make it
