In Germany, the price-tags include not only the price of an item (duh) but also the "price per liter" or "price per 100g" so you can see if the content of a package get more expensive

7:55 rabbit hearts, whole skinned rabbit, but it‘s not THAT common. In autumn and early Winter you can also find boar („Wildschwein“), venison („Hirschfleisch“) and similar stuff. Oh, and in autumn, also whole geese, and pretty much all year, turkey („Pute“).

6:54 The vegetable he did not know is called Rutabaga or swede in English. It was a very common poor peoples food during the famines of the world wars. Many of the older generations hate it because of that. Funny story; my grandma looooved making stew from it and had big quantities of the stew in her freezer. Most of the family hated it and to this day refuses to eat it. I was the only grand kid who liked it and also the youngest grand kid. So I was my grandmas favorite. Sadly I was not old enough to ask her the recipe before she got alzheimers and died. But I have down a pretty good approximation of the stew and wrote it down in the family cookbook. ( Still me and my mum are the only ones enjoying that one though xD)

Yes, there is rabbit. I figure it's not common in Canada? I didn't think that many people eat rabbit regularly here. But it's been available in the grocery store as long as I can think.

    For fruit and vegetables:
In Germany you buy seasonally. Watermelon and lettuce will be very expensive right now, while apples, oranges, kiwi, cabbage and root vegetables are cheap.
We also cook seasonally. That makes sense in an area with four seasons.
    Regarding cold cuts and meat:
REWE also has its own sausage production. A large slaughterhouse "Wilhelm Brandenburger". It is not of good quality, just like the fresh baked goods shown at the beginning, which come from REWE's large bakery. However, there is often a branch of a local baker and butcher in the markets. If you want good quality, it's better to buy there.

"Ja!" Brand is a generic brand, a "house signature brand" or "no name" brand of the REWE supermarket chain. They are usually the cheapest products REWE has to offer. However, those products/brand does not mean that it is any worse than a named brand. In fact, most often the product is made and packaged by THE SAME COMPANIES that make the major named brands.

6:23 fresh, unpackaged corn: not much of a corn/maize afficionado, but I think you can get unpackaged corn during the regional season for it… but as a rule of thumb, there will be less corn in European supermarkets or grocery stores than in any grocery store in the Americas….

And they even have two other own brands. Ja! is the absolute cheap brand, then there is the REWE brand itself and REWE - Beste Wahl. Unlike Aldi and Lidl, all of these products have their own manufacturers, while ALDI mostly has them manufactured by big brands. So REWEs brands don't taste the same like big brands.

Yes, the machine for bottle-refund is loud, because accepted plastic-bottles get immediately crushed, not only to save space, you cannot get money twice by re-using them.

Moin, Mace! Yes, the same in Germany, sometimes. They take the "normal" size of tea packages, but put less tea bags in it. Hidden price increase! 🤨🧐😤
Haha, perfect!!! I also always say: "an apple a day keeps the doctor away"! 🤣
Do you love all sorts of chips or just the usual potato chips???
(Potatoe, potAtoe, tomato, tomAto, either, EIther, neither, nEIther... (Harry & Sally). I love that movie).
Rabbit is very rare in german supermarkets, so far as I know. And I just know it as a whole like chicken. It tastes relatively similar, btw. It`s good.

And i was surprised, they changed packet sizes in both direction, some got bigger, some got smaller but the price per gramm always went up.

I love your 'Moin' as a canadian :D
Did u know: In Scandinavia (at least in Denmark) we say 'mojn'.
Some ppl say 'Moin Moin'. Don't know were this come from.
In Denmark 'Moin Moin' is sometimes like a good bye... And 'Mojn' is a hello, but PAST 9 AM! Before it is 'God morgen' - good morning. :)

Ja! is the REWE own brand, cheaper than so called big names like Kelloggs or anything similar, at the REWE near me they also have shelves full of single bottles, just Somali don’t have to rip open a 6 Pack 😊

Rabbit prepacked cold cuts are unusual, but you will find rabbit, boar or venison and to christmas even elk, together with the pork, veal or poultry in "fresh butchered section" of most Supermarkets.
Thats the difference to Aldi or Lidl etc... which are discounter.
Discounter have more limited range of stock, most of the time only one brand to choose from and/or they have their own brand, making money via selling cheap while restock also cheaper en bulk. Discounter usally don't have a fresh meat or cheese sektion, only packaged, while Supermarkets have a Fresh prduce section for butcherd meat and cheese, while also have more brands to chosse from and are more expensive than discounter. REWE has copied the idea of an own brand (Hausmarke) though.

The machines did not scan he barcode, they scan for a deposit icon. It doesn't matter which way you put the bottles in, the important thing is that they are not crushed. If they are crushed, the deposit symbol may not be read correctly. The scanner laser beam will be reflected incorrectly.

Yes, even worser, not only shrinking, even additionally price-rising on top. A diabolic combination.
For example my favorite baquette-salamis was sold in 100g (Gramm) Packs for 1,99€. Now it's just 80g AND 2,29€ ore more each Pack.
Potatoe-Chips the similar way and so on.

95% of the meat for topping bread, rolls and toast is pork. There is no rabbit in it, I have never heard of rabbit sausage. 😅 😂 🤣
It's pork because pork contains fat, which makes the sausage delicious. Beef is not suitable for sausage because it would be too dry. Apart from corned beef, you can't make much out of it.
