Im listening to music over 60 years i believe Steve is in his own league he may be the greatest singer ever especially from the late 70s thru the 80s. He was,at the top of the heap. Fortunately he's making a comeback, his stellar voice is so needed on the airwaves.
This is why us Classic Journey fans call this live song a 'Masterpiece!!!' It's perfect in every way! Also this song wasn't performed during the whole Escape tour. Only a few cities were blessed to hear this amazing song! Mother Father, has always been my all time favorite song from the Escape album. It's such a underrated song! Next up should be ...... 'Still They Ride!!! and Why Can't This Night Go On Forever!!!'
Its a special song for true old fans like us. The length of the song kept it from the charts, hence is why its that masterpiece just for us fans to enjoy.
Such a sad song on so many levels that a lot of the world's population can relate to unfortunately. A broken home with an alcoholic father who's addiction just tears a family unit apart from the inside out as the mother is left to care for her children .... alone. Steve is an absolute alien and the last 30 secs of this performance confirms he is not human. Incredible display of passion, emotion and vocal skill. He truly is one of a kind.
Steve has talked alot about his own family breaking up and how deeply it affected him. You can hear his emotions in this song. He is a one in a million singer.
@@gram5751 Yes he has and he found solace in singing growing up as therapy to him due to how much he was affected. Very sad situation but it also molded him into the musician he was destined to become. You are absolutely correct, one in a million.
You commented on the musicianship and are absolutely correct. They were all such accomplished musicians to begin with. Neil Schon played with Santana at age 16. Cain was with the Babys with multiple hits. Valorie was based in Rock/Jazz fusion. Then the voice....wow
You may have just witnessed the greatest live vocal performance in rock music history! I was at that concert tour, and song after song the band and Steve Perry were absolutely F-lawless! This song was written by Neal Schon's father, so they wanted to do him proud and they certainly did!
I have seen alot of epic shows in my life, and I have to say this was one of the most surreal concerts I ever went to. Lover boy opened for them and Journey was just spot on all night long. His voice and Neal's playing ,. Everything was clicking that night for sure
Unbelievable!! I thought he was the best singer of all...last part of the song his voice is beyond anything I ever heard!! Your rite like an angel!! His voice unreal!!!
He thought it was one of the hardest? Cain said he did the song for the album in one take. Can you imagine doing this in one take? Broke the mould when Perry was created.
You nailed it. Each band member is pulling their weight and then some. Each instrument and the incredible backup vocals are so on point. If that wasn’t enough, you throw Steve Perry into the mix and the song elevates into the stratosphere. They are unmatched.
They definitely need to upload more of Journey and Steve Perry... some like Don't Stop Believing, Separate Ways, Wheel in the Sky, Ask Lonely, Suzanne, Lights, I'll be alright without you... pfff many more is what that your fans were waiting for :')
Steve Perry é único. Até hoje não apareceu ninguém que chegasse perto da potência vocal dele. Ele canta, ao vivo, mil vezes melhor do que em estúdio.. Chega a ser insano. A voz... 🤍🤍🤍💜💜💜
People never talk about the rest of the band a whole lot, but Neil Schon was playing guitar for Santana when he was 16. It's Neil you see at the beginning of Black Magic Woman. Steve Smith is regarded by many as the GOAT rock drummer. There's always the argument of him or Neil Pert from Rush. You could do a lot worse than either of them. What makes Steve so phenominal is the fact that rock isn't even his first love. He plays jazz and other genres too. Jonathon Cain on keyboards is a fantastic song writer and keyboardist. Ross Valory is solid, sometimes great on bass. I think Perry was the magic piece they were missing. Once he joined the band it all came together. Greatest band in the world IMHO.
I was there too...I would have been about 75 feet further back, on your right side...in the middle of the lower level seating. Man, what a great night that was!!
I love me some Steve Perry, I would do anything for him as long as he sang while I did it, lol. There is a ton of songs by Journey to react to. I've never heard a Journey song I didn't like. Thanks for the reactions, ❤️✌️
When the Escape album was being recorded Steve Perry recorded vocals to Mother Father in one take done! I was at this concert in Houston Tx MTV with 5 VJs was getting big and every Saturday night they broadcast a concert and they were there At this big arena in Houston Joel Olsteen has gigantic church and my wife and Daughter live in Houston area and I go down to visit we go to church there and always look where Journey was close my eyes and remember so much
Im glad I grew up during this era . I was fortunate enough to be able to see this in concert live in Philadelphia. Looking at things today makes you appreciate what Steve Perry was back then . I love the 80’s Music we had so many wonderful bands back then to listen to . Generation X is the best my opinion
Ditto, Mike. I was in the lower level area, about in the middle of the Summit, on stage-left. Everyone knew we had just witnessed something really special that night!
I had their album 'Next'...which was the one before they added Steve Perry. Man...did his vocals ever make a difference on the Infinity album, which followed 'Next,' for the band.
Yo Dawg hope you see this. Yo love Journeys vibe and bluesy jazz because a few of the guys left Santana when they were babies after Carlos Mentored them. They went and formed Journey. Neal Schon dropped out of high school and Santana asked him into the band. Schon was 15 and playing at Woodstock! 🤣🤣🤣🔥🔥🔥. Steve Perry was working on pops chicken farm. Mom made him fight for his dreams. Journey made the call to him. Bro i saw Journey at least 11 times. One of the groups i traveled to see!!! 70-80’s were fun and lit!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😎😎🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Steve said this was his most difficult song to sing...can see the energy spent on his face at the end of the song...EDIT: posted this before your reaction mentioning the same at the 3:30-3:40 mark. Great reaction!
Not my favorite song of theirs but never fails to amaze. Perry is a vocal god and Schon brings out the song’s pain and tension masterfully. Great band.
Please react to more Journey off their greatest hits cd. Separate Ways is a great banger from them, but any song you choose from their greatest hits will be a winner! Thank you!
I've seen journey 7 times with 3 different singers but was born in tha late 90's and never got to see Steve but I'll tell you what... if you get a chance...Fucking go!
STEVE PERRY deserves ALL the praise he gets but I feel the whole band gets taken for granted. They all play for the song, not for their egos or to "flex" their abilities. This is especially true of Neal Schon's guitar playing. He is praised by other guitarist from different genres as a "musicians, musician." His playing is both technically flawless and his solos add another "voice" to the song. Not a surprise that he makes his guitar actually "sing." I read a long time ago, that he approached his guitar parts as if Aretha Franklin was singing them! That explains why each note he plays has meaning and not just a reason to play, just to play. It really has/adds emotion. There are MANY examples of his playing but check out an early JOURNEY song, "Of A Lifetime." This is the original version of JOURNEY before Steve Perry. They were more of a Progressive/Jam Band. It blew my mind as a young kid in the 70's & 80's, going to a record store and "discovering" this version of one of my favorite bands. I'm so glad I grew up without the internet. Ha!
I honestly think that out of all classic rock singers (Plant, Mercury, Daltrey, etc.) nobody could sing better live than Perry. NOBODY!!
khm..McCartney... khmm..
@@andrewsneacker1256 McCartney couldn't touch Perry's tone, range or emotion.
@@dhawkins13770 Oh yes. Live? Sure. I thought he said that "nobody could sing better than Perry". My bad
You're def right
Mercury sucks and he cant sing
Steve Perry is the greatest of all time. Yes, I said it.
Steve Perry is a class of his own , that man remains unmatched
his voice is INSANE!!
The Greatest Front Man Lead Singer...EVER!!!!!!!!!
You know it.
Totally agree!
Singularly one of the greatest live vocal performances I've ever heard. It's incredible.
2024 and still breaking out in chills
i was at this concert, i was 13 years old what a great childhood
You all just watched the greatest live vocal performance ever recorded
I was 10 years old at this show with my Mom and sister because they couldn't find a babysitter. I became a musician because of this show.
Im listening to music over 60 years i believe Steve is in his own league he may be the greatest singer ever especially from the late 70s thru the 80s. He was,at the top of the heap. Fortunately he's making a comeback, his stellar voice is so needed on the airwaves.
When Steve sings he makes love to the words and the songs are orgasmic. That's the VOICE!!!
Excellently put 👋
And this judge gives Steve Perry a 10 for the microphone dismount!!! 🤣 The man is a vocal genius!!!
No auto tune, pitch correction or pro tools....just plugging in and playing live. Incredibly talented, all of them.
As a tenor vocally, this song is ridiculously HARD!!!
This is why us Classic Journey fans call this live song a 'Masterpiece!!!' It's perfect in every way!

So grateful that he shared his gift with the world 🙂❤️🙂
Love it❤️ that folks is Steve Perry’s version of a Mic Drop 😎
My first concert! Steve has one of the most beautiful voices ever 🖤
You commented on the musicianship and are absolutely correct. They were all such accomplished musicians to begin with. Neil Schon played with Santana at age 16. Cain was with the Babys with multiple hits. Valorie was based in Rock/Jazz fusion. Then the voice....wow
They sound like an a orchestra! It was brilliant having Steve be in the center of them all belting out those 🎶 notes!
Just stripped down, pure talent.
When lightning strikes the family...have faith believe!
Steve Perry's voice is unreal. The band is awesome. I seen them on this tour in 81 in Cleveland. They was at their best then.

Steve without a doubt is fabulous! The rest of Journey was unbelievable. Neal Shcon was a beast at Gutar, Gregg Rolie key boards.
Absolutely in a class by himself.
You nailed it. Each band member is pulling their weight and then some. Each instrument and the incredible backup vocals are so on point. If that wasn’t enough, you throw Steve Perry into the mix and the song elevates into the stratosphere. They are unmatched.
Best,most heartfelt comment ever:"My God,he can sing!"
Yes indeed the man made me and the angels weep.
No body can sign like him... Steve Perry the best Malé voice ever no doubt about MR STEVE PERRY this group never be the same with out him
Steve Perry at his peak. Early 80s his vocals were untouchable. Don’t sleep on Neil Schon
Escape was his vocal pinnacle. And Schon is as good as there have ever been.

Saw them live. Best most perfect concert ever. Flawless.
Steve Perry - often imitated, never duplicated. 🤘
Never!!
I always say this on reaction videos: this song, the album recording,-was his FIRST TAKE! imagine that
Masterpiece
That's what you call ANGELIC! Gifted and rare. Steve's voice is now studied in universities. His voice is considered to be an anomaly.
I saw this live in Philly in 1982 . I will never forget it . It was in my top 5 concerts of all time.
Also seen this tour in California, they were amazing.
Wow 🤩 would have loved to see them in concert. I had babies to take care of and of course we had no extra money for squat.
I was at this exact show (16 yrs. old) , was a great one

There were only two singers I practiced their songs to hone my voice when I was young. Steve Perry and Rob Halford.
Pretty impressive. Try anything off their Infinity album. Can't miss.
Journey is absolutely one of the greatest bands ever! That wrote so many incredible songs and Steve Perry is the Greatest

Neil Schon was in Santana when he was 15. Prodigy
Your still my favorite-couple :-))
More Please!!!! jaajajja
If nothing else for yourself check out post Steve Journey with the drummer Deen Castronovo on vocals while beating the skins. Also incredible.
