Ebikes 2025 In 2025, new law will be going from 250w to 500w with speed staying at 15.5mph with a plus side being a throttle going from 3.7mph to 15.5mph the same as max speed which is good as 3,7mph is silly. They should allow whatever watt motor you want as this will not let you go any faster but get up hills easier that will assist those with health mobility issues. I have a 1000w which I bought in 2023 when I didn’t know about ebike laws. So am thinking to buy a 250w, but as this will change am holding on a little longer, I hope they can allow up to a 1000w motor before I have to sell this lovely bike for a 500w, but I think am dreaming. The laws are so harsh and unfair on those who have mobility issues or age against them. I do hope things can get better. There are many cars and motorbikes that can go over 100mph but can be driven on uk roads providing they stay within the speed limits, so it should be the same for ebikes.
You raise very good points. I agree there is great benefits to people to allow faster E-bikes.I know the police will soon have special on the road vans and new machine to check it capacity my friend in Spain, is a engineer and is training them. But people with a disability might have a reasonable defence in court.Anyway enjoy your E-.bike as best you can and we will await the new legislation 👍
None of this is true. The law has not changed and no law change in 2025 to increase from 250w to 500w and throttles remain legally at 3.7mph max unless type approved by DVSA. Certainly not in the UK. The proposal was part of a consultation by Rishi’s Govt in 2024. It is not law and nothing has been announced in 2025.
The laws are very very stupid. A manufacturing date should not deem a throttle legal or illegal when 2 bikes specs are exactly the same. Currently owning a 15.5 mph Throttle is illegal yet you can hire an ebike through Repsled with a 16mph throttle or buy a Pedibal bike which costs an extra 200 quid for a throttle with a piece of paper. (You can also hire a scooter with a 12mph throttle) It's all freaking nonsensical. I hope the laws change so there is one single set rather than and ifs and buts set of laws. I also hope they raise the battery to 500w for range and safety purposes. Raise the speed limit to 20mph which is concurrent with most streets speed limit and allow a throttle as it would benefit older people or less able bodied people.
heres my guide to ebike law. ignore it on principle because cars still exist. and everything is crap and we are utterly fkced so worrying about anything so trivial is ridiculous.
Very interesting information well explained 👍
