I don't know if I'm the outlier here, but if I need a disposable knife, I'll carry a folding razor blade. Better cutting ability, more affordable in the long term, fully replaceable blades, and ultralight/small. As a second knife, just overall a better option for a realistic second blade carry or a "hey you got a knife" option.

The white one definitely isn't D2. It performed like 3cr when I thrashed it. Sadly those were only seasonal for last Christmas. Lot of fun to carry and play with though. Took one hell of an edge when I sharpened it. The coating stood up to a couple hours of nonstop cardboard cutting without wearing off. Primary contact area greyed out a little bit, but otherwise fine. Cleaned it off with acetone quite a few times as well.

Never thought I'd see MC do something like this lmao.
The d2 version is very good for the price honestly. This one is a bit more fragile without the liners and the steel is closer to 3cr.

Bro yes! I have been carrying this knife since I bought it in early December. It legit is a great little knife as long as you don't mind stroping it everyday lol. Still went through an entire Christmas' worth of boxes fairly easily.

For cutting boxes, knife to cardboard, nothing beats a utility knife -- be sure to look into the style that mimics a side folding pocket knife, has a thumb stud and a pocket clip. They are and always will be razor sharp until you need to toss out the blade or flip it over to use the other side. I've got a 500 pack of utility blades that I feed mine with. For cutting box *tape* which is the bulk of box openings, yeah I often use a regular knife. CARRY BOTH.

I have the original D2 version (there is an updated version I’ve heard mixed reviews on) and it’s been great! Factory edge was total garbage, but I sharpened it up on my tormek and it’s actually held a super nice edge! Has become my go to cardboard break down knife because I don’t feel bad if I accidentally smack it into a staple or slip and hit the cement. Definitely recommend picking one up, but just know that it’s $5-$10 for a reason. The D2 version is great for $10, but don’t pay anything over that

I’d also say it’d be a good short term travel knife. Say you’re flying somewhere for a long weekend and only got a carryon… swing by a Walmart and pick one up so you have a blade on you during your trip. Leave it with a friend or kind homeless person before your flight home.

This knife greatly differs from the $10 Ozark Trail - In testing, the non stated steel is not D2 and the edge retention is more like 3CR. There is a channel (Knives I Guess) that tests these cheap knives live by cutting hours of cutting cardboard (cardboard slayer) . The D2 version lasts around 6-8 hours of non stop cutting. This one didn’t make it to 2.
He named this the, “Storm Pooper.”

Definitely watch the @Outdoor55 video before buying. HRC is not always what it seems. This thing is Poo Poo town 😂. If you go to Wal Mart for a knife just buy a Kershaw Iridium or a Civivi Brazen. $5 and $10 knives are worth exactly that and are going to be every time. Or just buy the Ozark Trash and a pull through sharpener and never experience a quality knife. Idc, It’s your money after all. I do like the buy one for when Bill from parts asks to borrow a knife idea though. Bill from parts deserves this knife, that guy sucks at life.

I don’t see the logic in buying one of these. People say “well buy 3 or 4 of them and throw them away!” That’s stupid to me when you can spend 35 and get a QSP Penguin or a Ruike P801 which will last for many years and be an infinitely better tool to use.

I bought 3 of these hoping to cobble together one nice one just cuz it was something to try for five bucks. One was centered alright the other two were way off. I went to try disassembling them and two of the three had pivots that had what seemed like a standard t8 on one side and then it was almost like they machined the opposing side to look like a usable torx screw but nothing fit them and they were extremely shallow. Oddly one of the had perfectly normal t8’s on both sides of the pivot so I disassembled that one cuz it’s the only one that was even possible to do. The bearings were very small and really cheap. It was definitely rough on the inside. I didn’t really expect anything different so don’t take any of this as a complaint. I cleaned it and reassembled and ended giving it to my pop. So really my main reason for even typing this is if you do go for the $5 white one it is advisable to make sure the pivot it actually usable on both sides.

MC, great review, but i think youre kinda missing the point. Your comparing it to a $30 CJRB, and sure, the CJRB is a better budget knife, but, is the Benchmare Bugout worth $130 more dollars than the D2 version of this knife? We as consumers need to demand better from production brands like Benchmade if Ozark Trail can make something like this(especially the d2 version) for soooo much cheaper.

I may buy a couple of these for use use in "high risk" situations (e.g. some use of a knife that is abusive but you have no other alternative at the moment) or as a "family knife" in the kitchen junk drawer. Ever since my now ex-wife snapped the tip off my first Chris Reeve knife years ago, the "family" doesn't get the good knives. (BTW, I was totally honest with Chris Reeve Knives, sent it back for a new blade, fully expecting to be charged ... they sent me the knife back, at their expense, with a totally new blade. No charge!)

The QC is questionable from what I’ve seen. The ones I have, have absolutely no play and the bearings are smooth. My father is old school and is a practical knife user, not a collector, he absolutely loves this thing and he uses it everyday. He’s a locksmith so cutting rubber happens, he also went through an unbelievable amount of mail and packaging and he was still on the factory edge last I heard.
When I come across the D2 versions I’ll pick one of those up too. The black handle looks like the action is rough so maybe hold out for the next run of those. Or don’t, we’re talking $5-10 purchases here. This is the kind of knife I buy when I just need a knife now and don’t have one in my pocket or I don’t have my car with me.

I mean, let’s be real - soap & water, an air compressor, and WD-40 is enough to maintain the overwhelming majority of knives.
My first griptilian I did NOT baby. When I finally tore it down for “deep clean”, it was indistinguishable (as far as the state of the small internal components) from my m390 bugout that I fussed over and detail-stripped every time I cleaned it. The grip had been left closed up - so just rinsed, blasted with an air compressor, and sprayed down with WD-40 - for like a decade. It’s a 154cm blade, so you can guess how old the thing is. Realized that I was going well into overkill territory as far as how I maintain some of my knives. I had been mildly concerned that the omega springs would be corroded or some grit got into the pivot and galled the washers over the years. Nope. It was fine.

MC, you are conflating this $5 'Storm Trooper' Ozark Trail with the $10 orange one. They are very different knives - as the orange one is D2 steel, arguably worth it for the money. This one, the $5 white one, has steel that is probably 3cr or similar - and is arguably not worth the money / effort, depending on what someone is needing.

I mean if you gotta spend it cool but at the end of the day this is caveman tech just cuz you believe it costs alot because whatever doesn't make it so.. it's made to cut stuff.. imagine buying a hammer made from super steel and trying to tell everyone how it's so much better then the 5buck one.. what cost actually sez is what ur gonna do with it... might as well be made of glass cuz that's how much use most of these bragged about things are

The D2 version is barely better. The heat treatment is so poor, the edge retention is worse than almost any other blade I've ever used. At the same time, the steel has no toughness and chips/snaps incredibly easily.
For $5-10, they are usable knives. But I would much rather spend $15-20 more and get something that will actually last. These Ozark Trail knives are ones I would grab if I was going somewhere/doing something where there was a high chance I'd loose/break my knife. Otherwise, no reason to go that cheap. The "just as good" crowd will cry that it cuts and that's all that matters. If that's all you care about, go for it. Just understand that you're paying $5, you're getting a $5 knife.

      How is he wrong?
I’ve seen a fair number of the previous ozark crossbar lock knives (I sharpen and maintain knives for a lot of friends & family) - they are disposable and a bad value. Developing pivot wobble (really it’s blade play in 3 different dimensions, which I’ve never seen on anything other than gas station knives) and getting lockbar damage after a few weeks of light use = an exceptionally mediocre, disposable knife. You get what you pay for here.
Or you could spend a few bucks more on a Ruike, QSP, Sencut, Vosteed, CJRB, Kizer, etc and get a solid folder that will last you. For disposable knife tasks - use a Stanley knife like a normal human being.
