  • Robotech was like a Sci-Fi cartoon/Soap opera.
Main characters died, Hooked up, got drunk when they were sad
,basically things you never got in cartoons.I loved it and still do.
This is a moment that as a kid freaked me out and i never forgot.
I like how after Ben dies Rick gives the sign of the Cross.

I never forgot this scene from Robotech. This was the moment I knew this was not Tom & Jerry or G.I. Joe because characters died and they never came back. Ben Dixon gone but not forgotten.

This. Robotech didn't sugar coat it. As much as I loved them, Star Blazers and Voltron came from similar origins but were much more censored (the Star Blazers episode where a kamikaze pilot's death is "undone" by reversing the footage is just laughable). Robotech (and presumably Carl) took a chance and while censoring the really brutal stuff (thirty+ shots into someone's chest, for example!) it didn't pull any "he was taken to a hospital planet" bullshit either. Roy died. Ben died. The fucking earth was *devastated*! In fact, that shot of that random soldier talking with a kid just before the bombardment from Dolza's fleet blasts them in 'Call to Arms' is the image I personally never forgot from the show.
I often wonder how these shows affected the adults us kids of this era became. I have often said that every child should at least have to watch Astro Boy 1980 as part of growing up for the life lessons that show teaches!

Western media is obsessed with the idea of making people think religion doesn't exist.
I was shocked that the show Iron Fist had the guts to have the hero give a buddhist prayer for a homeless man who'd overdosed.
That three seconds of Max crossing himself has only become MORE meaningful for me as I've gotten older and older. He wasn't "the religious character", he was a character who happened to be Christian.

What stuck with me most about this was the uneaten food. Roy never got to finish his pineapple salad. Ben never got to finish his steak. It's a brilliant touch from the writers that really makes these deaths sink in. Brutal couple of episodes.

As a kid, going from GI Joe, where everyone parachuted right before getting blown up, to Robotech, where people are getting killed right and left, including main characters, was absolutely jarring. But that's what made me love Robotech and Japanime, as it was known back then, so much. Yes it was a cartoon, but it didn't treat it's audience like children.

This crushed me in 1985. I was only 5 episodes in, having discovered the show accidentally and immediately fell in love with Lisa Hayes. I was still sorting out who's who and what did I miss... Literally the day before, I sat on the couch and watched Roy Fokker collapse and die. Then this. It was too much, man. I forgot all about my PB&J sandwich in my lap, overwhelmed with shock. This was not Thundercats. There was real consequences to this. Best show ever.
Now in 2023, there are whispers that we will finally see a live film adaptation of this wondrous series. I hope they honor the source material and make us miss Roy and Ben as much as we did the first time.

I just saw Kakizaki's death in the original Macross just the other day. Both versions no matter which you prefer are just horrible. Especially after Roy's death. Ben/Hayao's loss just poured it on how rough the soldiers on the SDF-1/Macross were having it.

Max's cross benediction to his fallen comrade hit home to me back when I was 12 watching Toonami... Screw the anti-faith hostility, that was poignant and appropriate. Love, value for life, and faith in something more than the terror and darkness around you... This is what Aldnoah is TRYING to be. Robotech/Macross didn't sugarcoat when it came to casualties. This show never left my psyche growing up.

I still remember this scene... the half eaten steak. This show was the Game of Thrones for me as a kid. Big characters were killed off. First Roy, then Ben. It was shocking but guess that's what made it so seem so real and unforgettable.

I have to say, especially after seeing other comments, until i was older, I always thought of Ben as an extra in the way guy, didn't realize the development or meaning of his eventual death until way later. As a kid, Roy was hard, but now it seems like, you shoulda known he won't make it. Ben was more like that best friend where they get screwed and your like oh shit, not him? You figure Max or somebody, not the guy who's just there but you don't appreciate it till he's gone, then the shit gets real. On that, it's not much, but on a budget 2nite, these 2 pork chops are to Ben

When Cartoon Network aired this in the early days of Toonami (1997-98 and again and an updated rerun in the early 2000s) I fell in love with Robotech.
It showed agony of war especially the first Robotech War with the Zentradi. Losing Roy Fokker and Ben Dixon were amongst the closest to Rick like family to yesterdays enemies became friends like Zentradi Commander Breetai, Exedore and Miriya Sterling. This was perhaps my favorite saga out of the three. In my region, Toonami never aired the Mosepada Saga (New Generation) for some reason (until I figured why several years later).

It was genius how the writers handled Ben's death, for those who watched the show, while he was likeable, it was obvious he wasn't as skilled of a pilot as Rick, Max or Roy, he was bailed out by them more than a few times, if he would've died first, nobody would've been surprised. But Roy died first unexpectedly and not in his plane but on his girlfriend's couch, and then while you're still reeling from that Ben dies, so it's like a stomach punch right after you've been slapped in the face.

The problem here is, Rick and company evacuated using Gerwalk/Guardian mode initially, when they all should have been in fighter mode from the beginning. Also, Ben's veritech was the lowly VF-1A compared to Rick and Max...although Max's veritech is also a VF-1A, I'm sure it's been modified. I just busted out all my old Yamato 1/48 scale veritechs and spent a fortune last night on the Bandai DX SOC 1/48 VF-1S....can't wait to display them. Rest in peace, Ben.

Sorry if this is two years late but There’s two versions of Robotech. The original broadcast version with some scenes of violence and nudity censored and a remastered version that adds some violence and nudity back in. Sadly the remastered version is the only one available now and the original broadcast version was only released once on dvd.

@@Jtibbssax Macross actually has a full dvd release in the US with a dub that features Vic Mignogna as Hikaru and Minmay Japanese voice actress replaying her character in English. Robotech on the other hand is stuck with a shitty altered version. The altered version added some violent scenes back in and that’s a problem. as we can see with this video, the part we’re you see Ben disintegrating looks like he’s talking without moving his mouth when in the original version Macross, he’s screaming in that shot. Adding these scenes back in cause editing errors in the dub. The biggest offender about the remastered version is the altered sound mix. An 80’s anime with modern sound effects does not fit, imagine Speed Racer with loud realistic car sound effects made with today’s technology, that what this version of Robotech sounds like. They really should have released Robotech as it aired on Television, and gave Macross as the uncut version.
