This still stays with me all through these years… especially with Max making the sign of the cross as Ben dies. And right as they’re still reeling after Roy’s death, too. After their deaths, that’s when I knew that Robotech wasn’t just any old cartoon (and which really started my love of anime).

It was genius how the writers handled Ben's death, for those who watched the show, while he was likeable, it was obvious he wasn't as skilled of a pilot as Rick, Max or Roy, he was bailed out by them more than a few times, if he would've died first, nobody would've been surprised. But Roy died first unexpectedly and not in his plane but on his girlfriend's couch, and then while you're still reeling from that Ben dies, so it's like a stomach punch right after you've been slapped in the face.

A Japanese cartoon gave more respect to the fact that religion exists with three seconds of a friend crossing himself at the death of a friend than 90% of mainstream media.

This is why kids today aren’t like us 80’s kids, could you imagine a cartoon on today with a scene like that?? You couldn’t even get that on prime time network TV now!

This crushed me in 1985. I was only 5 episodes in, having discovered the show accidentally and immediately fell in love with Lisa Hayes. I was still sorting out who's who and what did I miss... Literally the day before, I sat on the couch and watched Roy Fokker collapse and die. Then this. It was too much, man. I forgot all about my PB&J sandwich in my lap, overwhelmed with shock. This was not Thundercats. There was real consequences to this. Best show ever. Now in 2023, there are whispers that we will finally see a live film adaptation of this wondrous series. I hope they honor the source material and make us miss Roy and Ben as much as we did the first time.

Coming back, to this, you realize it wasn't just Ben. But Hundred if not millions of others people. Man what a great show. Gotta do a rewatch

This death is part of the reason I still worship this series. It gave Kid a series were there were repercussions and people you liked didn’t escape,they died and you mourned them.

This shocked me and my friend as kids. We talked about it for a week after Ben died. None of us had ever seen anything like this before.

I remember this episode, and then going to school the next day no longer being the same person after watching. It affected me and got me hooked on japanime

As a little kid I kept expecting that he was going to come back but he never did. It was harsh compared to cartoons I was used to at the time.

The problem here is, Rick and company evacuated using Gerwalk/Guardian mode initially, when they all should have been in fighter mode from the beginning. Also, Ben's veritech was the lowly VF-1A compared to Rick and Max...although Max's veritech is also a VF-1A, I'm sure it's been modified. I just busted out all my old Yamato 1/48 scale veritechs and spent a fortune last night on the Bandai DX SOC 1/48 VF-1S....can't wait to display them. Rest in peace, Ben.

When Cartoon Network aired this in the early days of Toonami (1997-98 and again and an updated rerun in the early 2000s) I fell in love with Robotech. It showed agony of war especially the first Robotech War with the Zentradi. Losing Roy Fokker and Ben Dixon were amongst the closest to Rick like family to yesterdays enemies became friends like Zentradi Commander Breetai, Exedore and Miriya Sterling. This was perhaps my favorite saga out of the three. In my region, Toonami never aired the Mosepada Saga (New Generation) for some reason (until I figured why several years later).

This was the scene that made me realize this cartoon was so different-characters actually dying was rare to see in a cartoon in the 80s particularly in the US where everything is censored

I just saw Kakizaki's death in the original Macross just the other day. Both versions no matter which you prefer are just horrible. Especially after Roy's death. Ben/Hayao's loss just poured it on how rough the soldiers on the SDF-1/Macross were having it.
