The team you go along with grow together and bond in their own ways which is awesome but explicitly the fact that Harley and Rick totally coulda had some shitty shoe horned romance and you could see it coming from a mile away but no. It keeps a consistent levity to the scenes that’s really charming, while still feeling sincere. It’s not like the movie doesn’t take itself seriously, it’s that it’s just acknowledging that fact that these characters combined this premise is kinda inherently silly. That level of self-awareness keeps the characters grounded and helps the more heartfelt moments feel genuine. That’s how it was for me, anyways.

I want to add on to the discussion on how the licensed music adds so much to this movie.
The scene where Harley escapes from the Corto Maltese prison with the Louis Primo song fits so well, but in a way that's not readily apparent. The song is about a gigolo (man supported by a wealthy woman, an extension of her) realizing that his life is ultimately worthless because there is no one out there that truly cares about him.
It fits Harley because she was always an extension of the Joker, and without that, and with her essentially abandoning her humanity, she knows deep down she's going to die alone. The scene with her hugging Rick Flag after she realizes that he was trying to orchestrate her rescue works so well afterwards because even in her state of nihilistic giddiness, she sees someone who cares about her well being. And the song is jovial in its cynicism, like Harley is in the face of all the horror around her.
Also that song is a fucking ditty and it's stuck in my head.

Honestly after watching guardians 1 and 2 and then seeing the trailer for the suicide squad, I knew the reboot was gonna be good. James Gunn has honestly earned my trust in his films. He can write and direct. He's honestly perfected his craft. What he does in a two hour movie, other tv shows rarely even do in two seasons. The characters are relatable despite their "super hero" status. I'm interested in the story. Each scene is art in motion. So at this point I'm not surprised it's good. Honestly.

dc movies have been making a comeback, and I think the reason for this is that warner bros have finally understood that limiting directors' and writers' creativity is a bad thing.

And that they need to stop chasing Marvel and do it their own way. They can’t be like marvel anyways, marvel is the way it is because of what they created and set up for the last decade, DC doesn’t have that so why bother try to be what it’s not and just be what it is.

Something that marks this film as great for me is how, even when I didn't laugh at the humor all the time, it didn't make me roll my eyes or take away from my enjoyment. I could always see where the film was going, and I don't mean that in a predictable manner, I just mean, 'oh, I can see what gunn is trying to do here'. While I didn't feel much of a gut punch when a character would die on screen, honestly, I think this sets a great standard for sequels. Because being from a prior film no longer guarantees safety.
Also, loved the Taika Watiti cameo.

James Gunn understand comic books way more than we thought.
Rather than changing them to make more edgy or adult, he embrace the surreal, dumb, over the tope and colour aspects of it while still telling a mature story.
