This has got to be the heaviest and best Genesis ever. What a set! (you can occasionally hear the crowd singing along....how great would that be as an artist?)
I was there that day, my only time ever seeing Genesis live. The rain was relentless and torrential - my abiding memory is of the 80,000 crowd repeatedly chanting 'Schirme zu!' when people at the front put up their umbrellas. Opening act Paul Young got a rough reception - all the crowd wanted was to see Genesis so they could escape the flood and go home! Being close to an US airbase, there was a large number of American military personnel near the front, most of whom appeared to be the worse for drink and proceeded to bottle both Paul and Genesis, much to Phil's chagrin. The show was indeed stopped halfway through Genesis' set to move the stage back, meaning that they never got to play 'Tonight Tonight Tonight'. Needless to say, Genesis were the epitome of professionalism, as evidenced by the quality of the track in this video. Standing ankle deep in water wasn't how I had imagined seeing my favourite band for the first and only time, but ho hum!
@@RICHL74 I don't remember specifically, but it sounds about right. Soon after, Phil mentioned in an interview that, with their success at that time, for the first time people were turning up who weren't Genesis fans, it was simply that they were the biggest show in town that year. He mentioned the bottling incident as being a reason why he was starting to question whether he wanted to continue touring. I have always assumed that he was referring to the Mannheim gig, but who's to say this was the only time it happened. Thankfully the band weren't ultimately deterred.
Hearing Phil sing Gabriel-era music so masterfully is an absolute pleasure. This is a fantastic performance by the entire band.
What a performance. They sound perfect. They really are spectacular.

Was this the one where they didnt do the encore with Phil saying we've got some right arseholes down the front?
@@RICHL74 Nope, that was in Rotterdam, Netherlands on June, 11th, 1987. 😉🎶
