Because it's the biggest graphical bump between generations. No generation since comes even close. As an example, compare Resident Evil 1 in PlayStation vs Resident Evil 1 remake for the GameCube, or Gran Turismo 1 and 2 vs 3.

It kinda predicted NFS Prostreet, with the theme for grassroot racing scene in Japan but including Shutokou as the stage. If Genki can get its feet back with new Tokyo Xtreme Racer, then I would wish for a C1 Grand Prix sequel even fourth Kaido title is in my mind.
Loved these genki games and never got to try this one. I played through a lot of kaido battle 2 without understanding a majority of it. Still had a blast

Thanks for sharing! I love the Genki racers, especially the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series. I was surprised to see that they're making a new one..the first in 18 years! This isn't one I'm familiar with, so I'll have to give it a shot! Cool that they have all the same teams from the TXR games.
It's about time. For years people have been using Assetto Corsa to play a massive conversion of the Tokyo circuit from TXR, and although the new level of realism there is amazing, all you can do is cruise around it by yourself or use it to race friends online. You don't get any of the RPG style gameplay loop of upgrading your car and battling weirdly themed CPU opponents. There's a big community of people just begging for TXR to return to its former glory.
I think this is one of Genki's best racers. Genki has covered many of Japan's racing cultures; highway racing, touge racing, and for this, track days. I love the aesthetic. What yellow did for R4, Grey did for this. I also love that they turned autozone shopping into gameplay mechanics, where car products act as perk loadouts.
Ah yes Racing Battle C1 Grand Prix, out of all the quirky games Genki released, this one might be the quirkiest of the lot, as a previous commenter said, this is what happens when you throw Shutokou Battle (TXR) and Gran Turismo into a blender. The game feels incredible to play, the visuals still hold up really well and now it's great to think we can actually understand what the menus say (no more language barrier issues!), shame the rivals names and bios still aren't there but this is so much better than when I played the game a few years back where I had to constantly keep a page open in the internet to figure out the menus! This game is fantastic, it really feels like the "ultimate track day simulator", and the soundtrack is the best of all Genki has ever done, the remixes they did for Ave Maria or Aria in G Major still play constantly in my head, and original compositions like "Destiny Angel" and "Atomic Flower" are addicting with beautiful melody. With the translation I hope more people get to experience RBC1GP! like the TXR games it's a completely unique experience.
First video of yours I’ve seen. Not to be funny, but is your downward inflection at the end of every sentence a gimmick, or is that just how you speak? Like, you’ll say “do.” But instead you stretch it out to “doooo” and the pitch falls off a cliff. Intentional or…?
I got this from Japan when it was new, most of the Genki games you can muddle through quite easily but this one is a bit more annoying with the menus. I remember I had a piece of paper with the translations written down. Main thing I remember is that car overheating was a big issue and you had to upgrade the cooling or your car would overheat if raced for any length of time.
Yeah that's a very standard feature in the Shutokou Battle games and in Racing Battle C1GP. Just like in Shutokou, look out for the pit areas I think they also cool down the engine in this game. The Kaido games instead have the engine overheat feature replaced by brake overheat, which reduces their stopping power.
@@frylucas That's right - though SB01 the overheating tended to happen once you started tuning and turning the boost up, from memory on C1GP you could be looking at a standard car overheating after just a couple of laps so cooling was a huge priority! Admittedly it has been a while since I've played it though.
I have been playing this a LOT since this came out. It's definitely not *anything* like a sim, and you don't need the racing line at all... it's pure arcade. Don't be scared off by that Gran Turismo comparison, it's pretty off-base ;) But that soundtrack, holy crap. The entire OST plays like a set if you listen to it on its' own, and it's so damned great. Some of the best dance and trance I've ever heard in a game. Definitely up there with Formula Karts and Wangan Midnight.
15 years ago my favorite racing game was Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2. I played it to death, and with my trained eyes, i can tell that in this Racing battle game, there are exactly the same racing tracks as in Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2. Very interesting, as I understand it, this is one of the real tracks in Tokyo 🤔#GenkiRulz
I was going to comment it's great and it would be as great to have a translation patch for the career mode of Sega Rally 2006, and I just saw that a translation patch for that game has been released 2 months ago :) So the 2 almost 2 decades old japanese racing game needing a translation patch the most got one almost at the same time.

I think none of the genki racing games can be forced to 480p on real hardware unfortunatly I wonder if there'sa 16:9 patch though Played this once and indeed got stuck, seemed kind of boring though. Perhaps I should give this one another shot now with the translation! "learn Japanese!" Who writes that? How about: "just buy all those real cars and move to Japan to race them on those circuits/streets!" My favortie Genki game? Shutokou Battle '97 on Saturn TOKYO Highway Challenge 2 (that's the European version) on DC Wangan Midnight on ps2 Wangan Midnight on ps3
@VideoGameEsoterica not for me unfortunately as Point Blank 1,2,3 menus and instructions before the start of each round are all in Japanese costing me an extra couple of seconds before I figure out what I need to do for each minigame :( There was a group that started translating it but they gave up halfway due to the way the menus work with the games textures

What is the level of car customization? I'm assuming deeper than other Tokyo Extreme Racer games since you call it Gran Turismo level? I think you should have showed the car upgrade and customization stuff but it's all good even if I don't get to play it then I'll check out the OST.

Because it's being massively upscaled by an emulator! Native PS2 has the roughest image quality of that generation.

Forza 1 came out a year before this, iirc. That said, the livery editor is very similar to the one in Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, which came out in 2003
I have the soundtrack to this on my Hi-Fi. Genki were right up there with Sega and Namco for racing games. I hope they come back fully.

Everyone doesn't like TXR Drift 1 handling but I love driving there whereas I hate driving in TXRD2 and Kaido Racer

Gran Turismo comparisons was in regards to handling. That being said it has a good customization menu
