    I know they can't really recreate the scene from the book because it relies so much on the characters' internal monologues, but this scene is so much better in the book.
    Knowing Yabu's potential for treachery, Toranaga was planning to get to Izu before Yabu could assemble enough troops to threaten Toranaga's own bodyguards, and was genuinely shocked that Yabu had mobilised enough troops to be in a position to completely overwhelm Toranaga then and there if he decided to side with Ishido. The entire scene is Toranaga faking total confidence while actually being completely on the backfoot, and calmly-desperately (if that makes sense) bullshitting his way through the situation and keeping Yabu distracted from realising that attacking Toranaga now is the best deal he's ever going to get.
    It's one of my favourite scenes because it reminds us that Toranaga isn't infallible, and can be caught completely by surprise. He's just really, REALLY clever and manipulative, so even when he gets outmanoeuvred it won't be long before he's out-bastarded his opponent. When so many characters in books or films are said to be highly intelligent, but have "genius plans" that don't actually make sense, or are completely invincible until the plot requires them to fail, a book where you can actually see the thought processes of a realistically brilliant schemer was awesome.

    • @melodies_are_alive
      @melodies_are_alive 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

      Well written analysis and I agree fully. Though this series is certainly excellent - it nevertheless would take many times the amount of episodes to convey all the subtle tensions from the book: the way Yabu-san tries to 'convince' Toranaga-sama that it is much 'safer' for him to stay there - only to be outmanoeuvred as Toranaga-sama picks up a pace in dialogue (and actions) that give absolutely no time for the plotters to keep track (the way he cleverly 'forces' Yabu-san to constantly follow him, thus depriving private conversation amongst the Kasigi), pulling in the final (brilliant) blow by gifting Yabu-san his famous sword - and escaping the trap by promptly leaving while the latter is still bemused by the unbelievable honour bestowed with this... Aahh, time to take that tome from the bookshelf and start reading it again! 😄

      I would say Yabu was epitome of street-smart but not wise; the reason is his ambition / treachery was an open book to read by Toranaga and can be managed accordingly. By contrast, Toranaga's own naked ambition was fully buried within his heart and he would go to all lengths to protect that fascade (incl. even sacrifising his most loyal vassals to seppuku)

Most shows set in foreign countries just has everyone speak the language of the demographics the show is made for using actors of that language doing terrible accents or no accents at all. Shōgun is a breath of fresh air in the fact that characters talk to each other in the language that they actually would. Its really feels authentic and immersive. You can only get moments like the one at 1:32 when you go the extra mile and put in the extra effort.
    Its like that terrible God of War game set in the Viking Age where everyone speaks English and sounds like they're from California or New York. I'm sick of this lazy tread. I'm hoping Shōgun's success will lead to more showrunners going the extra mile to make the show feel authentic.

    How could the director miss the most important part of that scene? In the book, and in the original mini-series btw, Toronaga personally inspects Yabu's army and then publicly gifts him his own sword, which is a sign of great respect and honor between Japanese feudal lords. And while Yabu is admiring the blade, Toronaga gets aboard the galley and leaves the village like a clever fly escaping a spiders' web. It was a powerful moment in the story and I'm surprised the editors cut that part out. pity.

    • @dorime3031
      @dorime3031 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i have not read the book so excuse my lack of knowledge, is the scene done differently because what i understood was that toronaga won the loyalty of yabu's army to a point that even yabu won't gamble on attacking toronaga. Was it different in the book? did he not win over the army and used his chance to escape in the books?

    • @MarchHare59
      @MarchHare59 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@dorime3031 It's the gift of Toronaga's swords that prevents Yabu from doing anything to Toronaga. The honor bestowed far outweighed the value of whatever treachery Yabu had in his mind at that moment and basically nullified the threat. The book explains it better: I recommend it but it is a long read. However, if you don't want to read the book, you might try to find a copy of the original mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune as it keeps the part where Toronago gifts his own swords to Yabu in the screenplay. The importance of the scene is Toronaga had no idea Yabu arranged to have his entire army meet Toronaga's galley in Izu, despite the fact he had an extensive spy network there. With Toronaga only protected by a few guards and surrounded by an army that is both friend and foe, he is trapped by protocol and extremely vulnerable, but rather than run away or bargain with Yabu, he takes the initiative and inspects the troops, moving quickly to keep his untrustworthy ally off balance, recognizing, praising and speaking with many of the samurai in their ranks like they were his own warriors and winning them over in the process. Toronaga then gives his speech, bows to the assembled troops and publicly honors Yabu by giving him his own swords which stays his ally's (more accurately, vassal's) hand and distracts him long enough for Toronaga to get back aboard the galley and away with his honor and dignity intact and Yabu's own army completely won over. The importance of the scene is it demonstrates that Toronaga is powerful, not because of his wealth or the size of his army, but by his fearlessness, sharp mind and strength of character. It is the moment in the story where one man managed to defeat an entire army on strength of will alone.

    • @oldone1234
      @oldone1234 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      because that would never happen , why would a lord gift his sword to his enforrcer . this sly way of winiing over the men makes much more sense culturally

    • @MarchHare59
      @MarchHare59 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@oldone1234 It did happen. Read the book. Yabu was never considered to be Toronaga's Enforcer. That position belonged to Toronaga's general, Lord Hiromatsu (aka "Iron Fist") and to a lesser extent, Hiromatsu's son, Lord Buntaro, who utterly loathed Yabu. Yabu was a minor Daimyo who happened to get lucky when the Erasmus landed inside his territory. If not for that, Yabu would have played no role in the conflict between Lord Toronaga and Lord Ishido. Culturally speaking, Toronaga winning over the common soldiers meant nothing, other than building on his prestige and popularity, which can mean a lot in a battle, but not so much in a social confrontation between leaders. Feudal Japan was not a Democracy. If Yabu ordered his men to kill Toronaga, they would be duty bound to do it, no matter how much they might have admired him. Winning over Yabu's warriors was Toronaga's way and putting Yabu in his place, but it had no impact on the situation at hand. Toronaga gifting his swords to Yabu was the key, like a lizard shedding its' own tail to escape from a predator. Bound by honor and protocol to go ashore despite being surrounded by Yabu's samurai, Toronaga neatly turned the tables on his opponent by one-upping Yabu with an even greater honor when he gave him his own swords which instantly bound Yabu to the same protocol he tried to use against Toronaga, and froze whatever plans had to kill or capture him in its' tracks. It was a great sequence in the book, and I'm sorry the director chose to leave that key part with the swords out of it.

At the end, they’re back at the beach, and Toranag gifts his own blade to Yabu as thanks for his loyalty. Yabu is so dumbstruck by the gift that he barely notices Toranaga being towed back to the ship.

    I hate to break it to you people but there will be but 1 season of this show. Shogun is a single novel. A massive 1000 plus page book but only 1. Clavell, being a much better writer than GRM it has a distinct, beginning ,middle, and end it stands alone. The 10 episodes of this series is all there will be. Don't be decieved by references to his Asian saga. The relationship of his novels is tangential at best, with only the decendants of some characters appearing in no more than cameos. The story has been had, it's done enjoy it but "est ist fini. "
