  • In this funk guitar lesson you will learn 4 ways to play one of the most popular funk guitar chord progressions the ivm - vm - im. Just a few songs that include this progression are "Let's Groove" by Earth, Wind & Fire - "Ladies Night" by Kool & The Gang - and "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by McFadden & Whitehead. In this lesson you will learn 4 different ways of approaching the rhythm guitar with these chord changes.
    1:13 Pattern #1 Learn to play the chord progression in Nile Rodgers style.
    3:22 Pattern #2 Learn the rhythm that used these changes on "Ain't No Stopping Us Now".
    4:36 Pattern #3 Learn to strip down the chords to just 3rds and how to embellish with neighboring intervals.
    7:50 Pattern #4 Get the full breakdown of the rhythm on the video intro - a super funky take on the progression using bass notes with the thumb.

    This is excellent!
    I’m personally struggling with Pattern #3. I understand high E string should be muted, probably with the pinky but when strumming dead strings, I still hear the high E ringing.

      @TastyGuitarcom  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In the case of the first chord you need to mute with the index finder as well, just in case your 3rd finger misses it

    One of the best funk rhythm lessons I seen. Many focus on just one chord shape played with different rhythm patterns.

      @@TastyGuitarcom No question, now, I need to work on right hand technique more than anything..I am not loose or fluid enough .. Pick hangs up on strings and digs in and it makes playing this style slow and not fluid and prevents building up any kind of speed..back to the woodshed !!!! Shally

    I don’t get a very loud tone when I scratch my strings. Is it the single coil or the amp settings that give it such a pronounced sound?

    • @TastyGuitarcom
      @TastyGuitarcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The key for me is setting the amp to the edge of breakup and making sure the mids are set high enough to cut through

    Great video, but regarding 3:45 Is that not just simply a C major chord? How can this be read as a voicing of Am7? It doesn't even have an A anymore

    • @TastyGuitarcom
      @TastyGuitarcom  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Typically in chord fragments you can drop the root and/or the 5th of the chord and still retain the character of the chord, and the bass note will give it context. If the bass player is on C it will sound like c major, bass hanging on A it will sound like Am7. Never look at a shape and think it's only 1 thing. I could call this 12 different things just by changing the context with the bass note.
