    I know when my dad died I went into a slump. Mom had been gone for 6 years and I lived to take care of him. All I could do was sit, it lasted for months. One day it felt as if loving hands were placed on my shoulders and said your good now and you'll be fine. Slowly I trudged back and worked room to room. I took pride in the difference in before and after trying to turn memories from tears to smiles. It can happen, I gave up not knowing it could happen and had. I grew up in a hoarding house so I try to have compassion for people but when children are involved it really triggers me, and I know that’s my own problem and these people have mental disorders, but I really struggle being empathetic sometimes in those specific situations. Usually I’m a pretty empathetic person.

    • @SilverSkateBetty
      @SilverSkateBetty ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@thicccemogf3488 The ones where they involve children are difficult to wrap one’s head around for sure. I also find it tough to empathize with the pet hoarders. Children and pets don’t have a choice and are forced to deal with horrendous conditions. Not easy to empathize with those situations.

    • @thicccemogf3488
      @thicccemogf3488 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@SilverSkateBetty agreed. Pets are part of my parents hoarding problem too, and I have five brothers who all had to live in the same conditions. My parents would constantly get dogs as puppies, love on them and then as soon as they got old enough for their puppy behavior to not be cute anymore they would just lock them in a cage 24/7 except to go out and to eat. Instead of doing any sort of potty training, exercising them, or any obedience training, they would just call them bad dogs and stick them in cages until they finally got fed up enough to get rid of them. And forget finding a home for them or taking them to a rescue or the pound, they would load up their children in the car and take us to the middle of nowhere, or sometimes my mom would target rich neighborhoods hoping a rich person would take them in, and just abandon them there. And they would go a few months to a few years without any animals and the cycle would start over again. Like they might be successful with an older dog that’s laid back and has been trained, it could work for them. But even then I find it hard to believe it would work out long term for the dog to live a happy life until they died. They only ever kept 3 dogs for the dogs whole life span, two of which were the first two dogs they had as a couple who were old by the time they starting having kids, and another little chihuahua named Tico for 15 years. But Tico was pretty neglected and never got vet care and when I went with my mom to put him down you could tell the vet was judging her for how neglected he was. They never got vet care for any of the animals because even though my mom had a 6 figure a year job they were horrible with money and lived paycheck to paycheck. I had to let my cat stay with my parents for 5 months once while I went to rehab and when I finally moved back home that weekend I was moving everything I called to tell her I was coming to get him and she said he was out in the neighborhood somewhere (he was never an outdoor cat before then) and so I went around looking for him and I finally found him and he had a giant wound on his neck from my mom putting a flea collar on him and neglecting to notice it was causing an allergic reaction. They had just let him outside so much they never saw him and the wound just festered. Plus he doesn’t get along with other cats and she always has 3-4 so I’m sure that’s part of why he always wanted out of the house. So I had to find $300 fresh out of rehab with no job to get my cat treated. But anyways they always wanted the cute puppies and puppies and 1-2 year old dogs are fucking insane. Of course they’re gonna piss and shit everywhere if you don’t let them out regularly or teach them how to tell you when they need to go. Of course they’re gonna destroy your house if you’re ignoring them and they’re bored out of their minds. The two current ones they have are kept in their cage about 22-23 hours a day. Two of my brothers learned contracting work and they re-did my parents first floor for them, but the basement and the upstairs still need done. Like they keep those floors clean now but they’re all fucked up from years of neglect. Anyway the first floor is livable now and my mom will let them out if my dad isn’t around and they’ll lay down with her after they go potty and eat. But my dad HATES them on the couch and they haven’t done anything to train them to stay off the couch so ofc they constantly jump on the couch and my dad will get pissed within minutes of telling them multiple times to get off the couch and puts them back in the cage. And every time they’re let out of the cage they freak out and are full of energy and jump around and bark and constantly want everyone’s attention because it’s so goddamn exciting to them to not be in that cage. My mom was telling me tonight she just wants to put blankets down on the couch so they can be up there with them without getting the couch hairy and she can just wash the blankets, but he doesn’t want that. I told her to do it anyway because he doesn’t get to be the only one making the decisions about them when he was the one that wanted them too. Plus I told her the more she lets them out the less exciting it will get for them and the faster they will calm down and go lay down somewhere or go play together somewhere. Or if you put blankets on the couch they’ll come cuddle with you. But my dad refuses to let her. So I told her she should probably just get rid of them because that’s no life for an animal, and she refuses to stand up to my dad about it, and she agreed and said she’s been thinking about it. And I said ‘okay and in 6 months to a year when you’re depressed again instead of buying another dog you won’t take care of we can go cuddle some puppies at a pet store or something and you should never get another one’ And she said no I don’t want any more dogs after this. I don’t think either her or my dad realize that they are the problem and not the dogs when it comes to how many they’ve given up or just straight up abandoned. It’s heart breaking to watch.

    • @SilverSkateBetty
      @SilverSkateBetty ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@thicccemogf3488 That is heartwrenching to hear. Not just for the pets but for you and your brothers that had to be subjected to watching the pets be treated that way and becoming attached to them to just see them get abandoned and lost. I'm wondering, did growing up this way affect you or any of your brothers by exhibiting the same behaviors as your parents? Do any of you have hoarding tendencies or was it kind of like "when I get out of here I'll never live like this" kind of thing? I really do hope that you and your brothers are now living lives that are fulfilling and happy. ♥

    I don't think anyone has ever described hoarding more precisely and succinctly. Excellent. I am an introvert so the friends I make are the ones I've had for 40 years. And the only family I had was my mother. My mother and a lot of my friends all died within 5 years of each other. (friends died of suicide, rare disease, addiction and cancer - and all young).
    Also my dogs of 20 and 15 also died. Prior to those deaths I cleaned all the time and the house was always cleaned - I hated clutter. After the last death of my best friend by suicide, (and the onset of painful auto-inflammatory disease) it drove me into not cleaning. Suddenly I needed clutter around me - as if to fill the void of the people I've lost. I'm struggling with hoarding (not too bad) and am slowly finding my way out. I'm a happy person and am grateful for everything so I'm lucky that I no longer suffer from depression. I never fully realized how loss can affect you in such a way. These videos help motivate me and help recognize my issue - its also great for cleaning product ideas. So nice of you to help people and offer your services for free to some folks who need it. Prayers to those who struggle with this ailment and loss. Its real!

    I absolutely share your sentiments and empathy. 😊My daughter is a hoarder, my Uncle is a hoarder, and my grandmother was as well. I, too, had done my research on this condition which must be worked with delicately. On another note, I'd swear you were a Virgo, haha!! They tend to be meticulous, organized, prone to good hygiene, and love to be of service. 😺I very much appreciate your ethics, cleaning skills, and your honest commentary. Hilarious!!

    I appreciate you talking about hoarding. My best friend's mom died when they were 15 and their dad completely went off the deep end and their home became a terrible hoarder home. It was very difficult for my friend to get out of that mindset but they've made so much progress as an adult. ❤ it's really mentally taxing. We used to clean their house when we were kids.

    You are awesome. I am also on the autism spectrum and I enjoy sorting and organizing. I have an adult son who is married to a hoarder, so I have been helping them with their house for years. At first I didn't appreciate that it was a mental disorder and I regret to say that I got judgmental. But we worked it out and now they seem genuinely appreciative when I visit. I do have to clear out some spaces for me to sit, or for my grandchildren to play in, but I've learned to ask questions in order to gauge the level of attachment to things, and at the same time I do push them a bit outside their comfort zone. Its such a tricky thing. Recently my DIL started taking an antidepressant med and she says its been a lot easier for her to give things away, but it hasn't been a magic solution whatsoever.

    We bought a rental house that previously had a hoarder living in it. We literally had to gut the entire house. The subflooring was shot and soaked in dog urine. The walls were covered with roach feces and I scrub for hours on a small wall and could not get the roach feces off. We replaced all of the drywall, flooring, kitchen cabinets, appliances, tubs, toilets and sinks. We had to go under the house and remove a mountain of garbage that was tossed under the house and front deck. It took us 6 months to gut and replace everything. There would have been no way to just clean the house and it be livable. I do have to say...you do an awesome job cleaning these houses

What ticks me off is when you go in behind guests who think they can trash the home just because they are renting it and paying a cleaning fee. These people are so disrespectful. What you do for the folks with genuine problems is a true blessing. I enjoy your silliness with your son and daughter. It is so nice to see a small family business. My husband and I have owner operated a window cleaning company for about 10 years. We usually only clean our (cotton) surgical rags with hot water and a little bleach, no soap. There is already dawn dish soap in the rags from the cleaning process. If you squeegee off the surface during your final pass, you won't need to go back and polish with microfiber afterwards.

    In my younger years, I cleaned many homes for people. It is satisfying to leave after cleaning and know you have helped a family get through the next week or two by having things in order until you come back again. There were only a couple of houses that would fall into the category of hoarder homes. One belonged to a youngish couple who were able to do better but just wouldn't. I was paid by his mother because she couldn't tolerate it.
    The other was a mentally challenged woman who had all the hoarding tendencies you describe. There were roaches falling from the ceilings as I helped her nieces clean, I could sense that she could not help herself. The television shows about hoarders didn't even exist back then so it wasn't something most people were aware of.
    Long story long, I didn't mind the house with the roaches everywhere because I knew she couldn't do better. I left the home of the youngish couple and I was angry because I knew they could do better, they just wouldn't. I certainly can't say that I understand everything there is to know about hoarding, but I do understand that it's like any other mental illness, no one would choose to have it if they had a choice

    I think people tend to forget that OCD is actually a mental health disorder along side hoarding. Neither OCD nor hoarding happens overnight.
    You can no sooner tell a hoarder to just clean up than you can tell someone with OCD to just stop what they do.
    I used to hate my OCD especially as it relates to cleaning and keeping things clean, however your videos help normalise my need to clean as just a normal part of life.
    Keep on being you with your witty, thoroughly enjoyable humour.
    Without even realising you are helping change the way people view certain disorders, for the better.
