Tesla FSD Is a SCAM and an ILLUSION?! Article Claims There's a Better Solution!

  • In an article on CleanTechnica, Steve Hanley writes that George Hotz, founder of comma ai, and others believe that autonomous driving solutions like Tesla's FSD Beta are NOT the solution to safer and better driving--at least for the foreseeable future. Rather connected cars using V2X-C or other similar technologies are. Will connected cars be safer than autonomous driving cars? And why can't we have both?

I have a very hard time trying to figure out what problems V2X in any form can do for safety that a pure vision based separate system can't. The vision system can detect all other objects, moving or not, with plenty of time to break and avoid. It's simply a matter of adjusting speed to the conditions and the ability of the vision system.
What is it V2X need to solve? Speeding through intersections because all other vehicles' position and speed are known? This is not only unnecessary, it's also highly irresponsible. Neither wild animals, babies, pets or balls will have V2X inserted, so vehicles need a vision-based system to spot those.
The idea that we need to optimize road usage and make traffic as fast as possible is a structural fallacy, most likely endorsed by the car and fossil industry. Inner cities need to be made life-sized and friendly to active travel (walking and cycling) and safe. If motorized vehicles needs access they should drive slow and be segregated by curbs.
Absolutely no need for V2X. I don't think it solves anything.

I find it incredible that they even think this is ever going to work. Even after decades there will still be people refusing or forgetting the tag, and oh we also have to tag every deer that can cross the road, and even tag loose debris on the road as soon as they appear ? This could arguably make driving more unsafe since the driver will get a false idea of everyone and everything else wearing this tag. I would say that after 30 years this system will increase safety maybe only 1%

Incredible analysis John. This article represents a profound admission by Comm AI that their company isn't going to be able to solve fully autonomous driving, and nor are they going to continuing trying to do so (unless they're throwing up a smokescreen/red herring). As you say, John, when Tesla eventually solves full self driving, all cars driving with their FSD software will be BOTH autonomous AND fully connected, so it's not an either/or proposition...Tesla will solve both. Oh and that other thing where George Hotz says that humans really are great drivers, then gives us the statistic that around 1.2 million people are killed on the roads each year, globally, often due to tiredness, drunk/drug driving, speeding, texting or otherwise losing attention or doing unsafe things (not to mention all those who are chronically disabled and traumatised by these and other road accidents). Solving autonomous driving is one of the - perhaps the - most important and near impossible tasks humans are trying to solve using technology. It's a bold, brave, ambitious and essential project from Tesla - let's hope they can get it done (and not tooooo long from now), thus saving millions of lives and significantly reducing injuries and trauma on the world's roads.

3 second gap is now the latest recommendation.
A 2 second gap = 1 car length per 10kmh. Therefore at 100kmh a 10 car gap is required to deliver a 2 second gap. Most drivers only have a one second gap and too many idiots don't even have a one second gap. Result multiple car collisions.

Some great points that I think you made but deserve amplification: humans aren't great at driving, we don't need human-level intelligence for driving; herd animals have enough intelligence to do complex traffic, there IS no perfectly safe driving, but there is probably 2 orders of magnitude of accident prevention to be gained by intelligent infrastructure, "solving" reasonably safe autonomy in private structured environments can be done with the type of tech being deployed by the non-Tesla players. Tesla's is the only approach I think will be reasonable about open road driving.

It's always difficult to estimate how long it will take to solve a problem. Once you really understand the problem, then it is solved. While you don't understand the problem, you can't possibly state how long it will take to solve - it can only be a guess. On a journey of reaching a goal, you look at the first problem to solve and estimate how long it will take to solve and then we will be perhaps 1/2 way to the goal, so you estimate the final goal should take about 2X your estimate for that first problem.
But when the first problem is completely understood and solved, now the next problem is much more formidable, because you know more about it and are beginning to understand parts of it. And you estimate the time to solve this next problem you don't yet understand. But surely it represents 1/2 way to the final goal? So the final goal must be only 2x the time to solve the current goal and with that concession, the final goal moved further away again.
When you realize that each problem solved, although a grand achievement, reveals the next problem that is as difficult as the sum of all the previous problems and it becomes very demoralizing to discover that by going 50% of the way there in each increment, you will never get there.
We may have solved problems elegantly and perhaps even within the time we promised, and still be faulted because we also exposed an enormous remaining problem. Skeptics are left feeling that FSD is no closer than we thought it was 10 years ago, and therefore we must have not made any progress?

C-V2X standardisation activities have been ongoing for at least 5-10 years, at least in Europe. There were two competing standards, one based on wifi and another one on 5G.
Sure, they can be useful to provide early warning about accidents, cars braking in front of you, etc.
My problem with them at the time was always that they don't solve the full driving problem. An autonomous car will never be able to rely on these technologies only (see also smart infrastructure) as there is always a chance for a non connected vehicle to have in front. So, sure connected technologies can help you be 99% safe, but unless you solve non-connected self driving, they will never be 100% fool proof. For me they are a "nice-to-have" add-ons

V2X is maybe somewhat good. But one should not require everyone else to have transponders to get from A to B safely. FSD doesn't need any of that. It's getting pretty darn safe already, and DOJO should speed that up significantly.

The western end of Interstate 10 was studded with sensors about 4 decades ago (a CalTrans experiment) to facilitate smoothing congestion by remote car control that closes gaps between cars -- reducing cars to within 6 inches -- and controlling speed. Well, how did that go? Still waiting.

So according to this article, research and development shouldn't be pursued unless it is the best solution? How do you know the best solution? Autonomous cars that are in communication with other nearby transportation systems would be even safer than autonomous cars alone. Shouldn't every pedestrian communicate with cars nearby as well. However how does a car drive down a country road if it isn't autonomous?
Perhaps Tesla should connect its cars via WIFI so one Tesla would not crash into another Tesla. That works for me! I think connected autonomous cars would be a really great step forward.

The question for me is, do we really want or need autonomous vehicles? I enjoy driving, especially when there aren't idiots on the road and as ADAS becomes more common and a requirement to future car manufacture, accidents will be reduced as it will be more difficult to have an accident. Just by employing regulations which require an automated system that will not allow a driver to speed, tailgate, drive when not alert, cut in front of a vehicle in your blind spot and will actively avoid collisions driving will become much safer and less stressful.

When me (as an European) learned that you have only 55 mph in some places I was like: What? That is way too fucking slow. We have 130 kph -> (80 mph) or 110 kph -> (68 mph) on highways and 90 kph (56 mph) are on single line roads between cities.
What you Americans seems to lack are good road rules, that are known, and enforced. You also lack driving schools - we have lessons required by law (in my country it is 36 hours of teory and 34 hours of driving, parking and car maintainence - also checking if the car is in drivible condition etc. the lights are functioning, the breaks are engaging and so on) this is ended with a test of our ability to know the rules and how to drive.
The lector in these driving schools is certified and it is required that you are being teached by this lector. So there is no "My dad teached my how to drive"

There's a very important point which the article missed completely, and I wish your video had addressed.
It's not *just* about safety. It's also about economic value. Autnomous vehicles can create a huge economic impact, which the other suggestions in the article simply do not.
Suppose we have these two alternatives, which we will consider as equally safe:
    1. Nanny cars which make sure the driver isn't sleepy, drunk, distracted, hungry, horny or whatever before allowing them to drive.
    2. Autnomous cars which can drive just as well if the "driver" *is* all of the above.
Neither car will crash, but the autonmous car actually allows the driver to use it, instead of seeking less efficient alternatives. And they can make use of the travel time for work or relaxation (which also has economic value - we are, after all, willing to pay for entertainment). Even if time in the car isn't quite as productive as time outside it, it's still more than the 0 you get if you have to focus 100% on the driving, and the total value generated is huge.
In case some self-righteous apologist wants to argue that safety is the only thing that matters... I'll remind them that economic value is why we drive cars in the first place. If you want absolute safety, you can ban cars altogether and just walk everywhere. But that will actually cause more deaths, because the economic value created by cars in general (and autonomous ones in particular) can be used to improve standards of living, health, medical research, and increased safety in other aspects of life.

Driving 'with the flow' is safer than driving at the posted limit.
True, and even kind of obvious if you stop to think about it.
    Interesting factiod:
In most major cities (like Dallas) on most major streets (multi lane with major intersections controlled by traffic lights), city engineers DYNAMICALLY adjust the timing of each traffic light so that you have to drive at least X mph but no more than Y mph to go from one intersection to the next without having to stop.
The engineers do this to maximize traffic flow. Even if X is higher than the posted speed limit. I have driven on such streets when the traffic was flowing at 10 mph above the posted speed, and made it all the way across town, very few lane changes, without hitting a single red light.
It is cool, and IT IS SAFE. (Well, safER.)

The author of the article knows little about the subject. Connected cars were the bunch of ideas which were at the beginning of the autonomous cars thing - something I remember 20 years ago. The reason it didn't catch up is that is more difficult to practically implement than e.g. Tesla's robotaxi. The AI prepared to operate in human environment is dependent (in development) on a car company. When they nail it, owners of brand can use it. The rest of the drivers can behave as before, can drive old or cheap cars, or drive manually because they like it.
With connected cars, everybody has to be changed, all cars connected, the tech installed on all bicycles, 20-years old clunckers, Amish carts, lawn movers, dogs and cats etc. It is just impossible in human societies which are not some Nazi utopias. When not totally implemented, connected cars are nearly useless.
