This song shows Jimi Hendrix's compositional vision, layers of sounds, space sounds, interwoven guitar tapestries. Originally created in the studio with sound on sound overdubs, here Randy shows skill, expression, artistry, meticulous re-creation of notes and effects as well as his own flourishes, in a live performance, wow wowie!
There are probably 2 or 3 people on the entire planet that can play this song.. I dont think the audience actually realises what they just experienced... Bravı Randy God bless you and your graet band and you efforts to keep Jimis music alive''!!!
Incredible version of Hendrix' 1983... by Randy and band. They captured the shifting, sci-fi , psychedelic blues of this masterpiece , that was never played live. Randy is the real deal..awesome guitar player !
Wonder what Hendrix would say if he were suddenly sitting in the audience watching Randy... That little smirk and the quiet giggle... "He sounds just like me... that's far out, man."
+Maizerus I'm sure Jimi would of been totally blown away by Randy's amazing talent, especially when Jimi found out Randy is also from Seattle.. Randy saw Jimi perform live at Seattle's Sicks stadium July 26th 1970 when Randy was just 15 years old, unfortunately Jimi died just two months later.. That Seattle show gave Randy the Hendrix bug, by the mid to late 70s Randy's dedication paid off so he began performing his Hendrix tribute live and the audience just loved it..
For any of you who want to bash Randy for being a "so-called" Jimi Tribute Act, I suggest you look into the history of his guitar playing & how he came to be what he is. He absolutely pays true respect to the music & legacy of Jimi unlike many. He's no joke.

I keep coming back to this after listening to Electric Ladyland for nearly 50 years...I just can't get over how they pull it off live...this is magical.
One of the most "unpretentious" musicians today. Very humble and not out for himself. Just following his passion. More than I can say for the likes of most everyone else today.
Never forget buying the Electric Ladyland album after school at age 15, and my Mom taking a look at it as I walked in the door. When she saw the '1983: A merman I Should Turn To Be' listed in the song tracks, she stated "what kind of crap is this you brought home?" It was circa 1975, about seven years after the original release of the album. I listened to it until the vinyl wore out.
Lol, I can relate to this. I had Electric Ladyland in the early 70's and there was a period I listen to side C everyday probably for at least a year and a half straight. And my mom hated it, I think because of the spacey intro to this song, which I loved.
LOL - I can totally relate. I had it on a 4 track reel-to-reel, and I fell asleep with the headphones one. I slept through the whole album until the sweet guitar solo on Moon Turn The Tides... and that woke me out of a dead sleep... so eerie... haunting... beautiful. I'd never heard anything like it before or after.
sdgakatbk Same. Except my mom hated it because I had come across the British cover release with all the naked women. But when she heard it, and then me playing the songs myself a month later, she understood.
@@GoranKljajic. Firstly, it is some of the most technically complex music ever created, analog, with a track-layering recording technique devised by Kramer in the studio, so pre-recorded track compilation tapes would have to be generated beforehand, and played as accompanying music during the song, so to re-create the full soundstage that was accomplished by Jimi, and Eddie in the safety of the studio. Then there's the issue of who would play the manually-challenging bass parts live, as Jimi did the bass-work solo in the studio; also, Chris Wood would have to be onstage with Jimi, to recreate his classic underwater-sounding flute accompaniment, a critical aspect of the Atlantis Approach sequence. There are a number of reasons why Jimi's undersea masterpiece might not be presented live at the time, to include anticipating future sound-tech innovations becoming the next-step of production excellence, along with Jimi's high standards of quality that infused all of his productions, always. But I think the main reason, and the very sad one, is that Jimi had shelved the 1983 Live! project until a later date, perhaps after his life had come under more personal control, by himself, as he was such an A-list, world famous celebrity, being run a mile-a-minute to generate revenue for his rat-back manager Jeffery, and felt he didn't have the intensive personal time, at that point in time, to process 1983 Live! into the spectacular production it should be. The so sad aspect is that he had no concept he would perish so soon in his young life, so he put things on hold, to revisit them at a later date (like we all do), knowing that after things had settled down a bit, he would go full power on 1983 Live!, as he should, but only because it still stands as the first, and greatest progressive rock song ever created, with a second-to-none framework of analog recording techniques binding it together as a sonic masterwork, the likes of which humanity will never see again in a thousand years, because giants walked the earth back then, giants of the recording studio. Jimi did everything he could, to give us all he could, hoping to share his universal wisdom, and we are all so fortunate to be alive in this era that produced him. He still does share, to this day, never waning, and will continue sharing for as long as sound recordings exist for humanity to dream by.

Huge respect for you and your band Randy. There's such a pure vibe in your music. And as a Jimi Hendrix fan I can say this, you are the best and the most befitting tribute ever to Jimi Hendrix. Play on Randy!
Okay man, here you have person that said to himself many years ago (age 14) I've got to save this style of music for future generations and give it credibility. Today's music doesn't even come close to the creativity and emotion of the 60's. I don't even know what to say about this other than thank you Randy for your devotion and foresight to keep this iconic paradigm in existence. We as boomers and Hendrix fans cannot thank you enough for your performances of a rock legend. Also, thanks for your partner muscians who I'm sure, share your love, for something that transcends time itself. Wish I could see you guys live!
Thank you Randy for sharing your incredible talent with us all these long years. And for keeping the spirit of Hendrix alive and well. You are both legends!🔥
i think this is arguably the best song ever...i don't think jimi ever did it live, but now we can have an idea of what it would have been like...amazing!
Randy and his band is doing a great job, as in doing Jimi "note by note" live. Its not about being Jimi, its about as the man himself said: "Play music, play my music",, and Randy certainly does. Way to go. Very true to the recording.
My brother saw Jimi 5 times when he took me to see Randy and Machine Gun in 1979 my brother said he is as close to Jimi as it gets Randy Hansen thank you so very much for your dedication to James Marshall Hendrix!!!
Love this dude! One thing to cop impossible Hendrix but then throw in dead accurate singing skills just because you can. Then pull it off live? I'm impressed. Thank you Randy
This was about 2 years before Randy and I first met in West Seattle, Alki Beach ... Where I was living at the time... Pretty sure Kevin still lives down there... Yeah so anyways, For the first 3 years I never really knew that he was international worldwide... I knew he played Jimi Hendrix stuff and did a couple of his own projects, seen him play at some local Seattle clubs ... Etc... We've always just interacted as friends and that's always how it's been since then... Should give anyone who doesn't already know an idea of how genuine and humble this man is... So yeah, I've got some cool friends and I feel that way because of the genuine humility they have in their hearts... The rest is the bonus 🎶🤘🏼😎🎸🎶 Good Share UFO Cheers 🥂
I'm just now learning about Randy. It warms my heart more than I can put into words to hear Randy and this fantastic band play. I only wish I'd known about Randy decades earlier. All the great music I missed hearing him play. Bless you Randy! The spirit of Jimi Hendrix lives in you. Bless this band!
Hallo Howard - thanks for your blessings. We are having a lot of fun doing this. Maybe you want to see us playing live. Our tour dates are on randyhansen.com best regards -ufo- :-)
I never tire of this song and have been listening to it for about 50 years. Still amazed by everything Jimi did and appreciate Randys interpretation. No one else to my knowledge even attempts to play this one.
Seeing Randy Hansen in 1983 at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco I was 18 he stood on my table and smoked all my weed and play guitar like a madman there were photograph was outside of the Old Waldorf selling photos of him I purchased a few of the photos and he autographed them for me right away no problem with an awesome dude can't believe is still around playing guitar and singing just as beautiful as ever people people who have never heard of he really are missing out on a great guitar player even though he plays Hendrix you so authentic
Randy Hansen is amazing. He defies Logic. He is the only player in history, who has ever come close to perfecting Him, the unnameable, and, who has touched The Hem Of God. I saw him in 1983, and it was a show that I have never forgotten. He is a brilliant man. He is a reincarnation, his fingers, and his beautiful personification!!! Thank you Randy!!!
I've watched and enjoyed this vid several times, and I have to thank ufowalter for posting and Randy for doing. wow. Many people my age lost Jimi when we were just really starting to rock. Since then, it's always been a matter of grasping at incomplete recordings and various best-of albums that have a few familiar songs and some other stuff, or mix tapes that hold amazing promise or...you know the rest, right? But I have always admired Randy. A lot! He captures the spirit and makes music with intensity and true love. In this song, he also captures much of the delicacy of Hendrix, too. Lighter Salute? Hell yeah!
Hi Bob - thank you. I am happy you like it. I am also really thankful for playing and touring with Randy for over 20 years now. He´s a good friend, a gifted musician and the funniest guy to hang out with.

Incredible! Randy could wipe the floor with Jeff Beck any day. Beck couldn't write music to save his life. I've been a classical/ electric guitarist 43 years. Saw Randy 1980 Philly. Janie Hendrix must be very proud of what Randy has done.

Mr. Smith you are dead on. I always appreciate a musician who plays with heart and soul verses the so called technical uptight approach. I have been fortunate to have lived a long enough life and been exposed to various periods of music. I first heard JIMI in 1967 and was hooked from the get go. But I was open minded enough to appreciate those who have come after him. The list is long and varied starting with the man himself to Led Zepplin, The Allman Brothers, Sea Level, The Dixie Dregs, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Robin Trower, Stevie Ray, Hiroshima, Al DiMeola, Steve Vai, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, The B-52's, The Clash, The Brains.......Satch.......Sevendust....and the list goes on. I was fortunate to have grown up and lived in Atlanta Ga. and have seen each one of these acts over the years. Good music speaks for itself and owes no one an apology. We should keep an open mind. I am 57 years old and listen to T-Paine and Akon for Christ sakes!!!!!! and I am caucasion!!!!!!1 LOL
Truly awesome combo playing from these three. Superb guitar playing and singing by Randy. What dedication to the task and finding all those magical, mystical sounds of Jimi's.
Randy Hansen Band Are 100 % Pure Talents And I'm Amazingly Delighted To See Real True Original Rockers In 2020 !! Yes ..Sad I Didn't Catch You Earlier !!
I respect the fact that many musicians have kept Hendrix' music alive. Doug Pinnick from King's X is doing a Hendrix tour. I moved to California in 1978 and a short time after, I discovered a Hendrix tribute band led by Randy Hansen. I finally got to see him perform in a small club in Pomona. I was completely blown away, and to this day I personally feel that this man plays the music of Jimi Hendrix better than anyone else. Wish he would come back down to California one day. I'd love to hear him play live again. Anyone who can play 1983 as he does would be considered a phenom.
I keep coming back to this fantastic live version of my favourite Hendix song. It really is incredible. I'm not into tribute bands as such, but if you ever wander over to the UK Randy, I'll be coming to see you!
That was a beautiful piece!.............you guys are IT!! not only each of you, drums, bass, guitar and voice, captured the soul of this song but made JH immortal...AND one more important thing your own personalities as musicians r there enhancing even more this tune how it should be.....CONGRATULATIONS & thank you for the great time & music.....!!!..you guys are solid & tight a real professional treat to listen and watch .......great to have you guys around and i hope you are to remain for decades more.......I will travel to see you sometime in the next few months..........you guys should open the music awards as a remembrance of JH and your talent and effort through the years.
ronald Williams It's the most complete version of this song I've ever heard anyone cover. The Allman Brothers did a 20 minute jam when I saw them. It was cool, but not as complete or nearly as good as Randy doing it.
To be able to recreate a lot of the effects that Jimi created in the STUDIO, is incredible, Randy you are more than a tribute, you should be proud of what you accomplished doing this live on stage!
Saw Randy Hansen 3-4 times back in the day. Always had a blast. Always fun. The 1st time I saw him he was strictly doing a Hendrix tribute as Randy Hansen's Machine Gun. He then started doing some on his own stuff later. But the shows were always outstanding. If he captures anything about Jimi, it is the sheer joy of playing and turning people on. I missed Hendrix by 5 years, so at the time I saw these shows as a 17 year old in 1978 it was as close as I would ever get.
Ufo, You tell Randy I'm still here on N. side of the border, home is just 150 m. S., I-5, but feels so far away. Thanx to youtube I can run to my roots. DEEP! There's no place like home! SMOKIN'! Love & miss you more than you'll ever know! Still a Seattle rain baby. Hold back the water! Same rain falls on me, as falls on you. ROCK & ROLL! Sheri Champagne p.s.- Kevin F. too
The fact that as the result of many weird and nice coincidences I got to play a Germany tour with him as his bass player is among the biggest achievements my musical self ever experienced. He is the real deal, a kindhearted, giving person and a musician of seemingly indefinite depth. I love him, he's the best.
ASTOUNDING PERFORMANCE ,,,THIS MAN , REALLY HAS LIVED , BREATHED ,AND HAS WORKED HIS WAY SO MUCH INTO THE VERY ESSENCE OF JIMIS MUSIC , WITH RESPECT ,PASSION ,HEART & SOUL & A TRUE VIRTUOSO IN EVERY MANNER OF A GUITARIST AND PERFORMER XXX INSPIRES ME EVERY TIME XXX ''KEEPER OF THE FLAME '' 1000% !!!!
Randy, as far as I'm concerned, having grown up in the 60's, having seen Hendrix three times in concert my self, and having listened to his albums, about one million times, and knowing every single lick and rift, I think it would be more difficult to figure out, memorize, and reproduce Hendrix's skill, than to create it originally. Therefore: in my opinion, your the greatest! Thank you.
I never got to see Hendrix but I did see Randy at a small venue. Absolutely incredible, he seemed to be channeling the spirit of Jimi Hendrix. He came out into the audience and walked across the armrests of the seats, standing over me with one foot on each armrest. He didn't copy Hendrix. He was simply amazing. I've been wanting to hear this song, can't find a decent recording of Hendrix then Randy Hansen popped up and I got my fix.
Robin Potter Hi Robin. Thanks for your comment. I play with Randy nearly 20 years now and you described exactly what I felt when I saw him the first time. Back then, Horst Stachelhaus, the former bassplayer for Randy, invited me to a show near my home town and I was expecting a Hendrix cover band, which I thought was kind of uncool, even though I heard that he was very good. After 2 minutes I was converted. He did not only cover, he really was able to call the same spirit. It was kind of shocking for me. Later I was asked to join the band, I didn’t even have to think twice. He really is an original. Where did you see the show you were talking about ?
Yep saw Randy in Houston and it just shocked me I was stunned for one cause no body played the tunes he did live not even Hendrix on some of them... I still have the gold herco pic he threw at me at the end of the show. He played all the hits and all the obscure Jimi that was never played live only it sounded exactly like the recordings. I think the spirit of Jimi burns bright in that man and hes far from gone nor forgotten.
hello !! YES !! Jimi was my hero at this time _ the 3-side (1983....) on the LPs >Electric-Ladyland< was THE Acid-test....afterwards nobody moved for 1/2 an hour _ hard to play LIVE...but Randy Hansen did it! _ now >Buckethead< is in my brain and nervous-system bringing joy .... Thank-You ☮~e~☮
Randy, Ufo and Walter are just incredible! I bought Band of Gypsies 1970 and know every millisecond of it. Same with Electric Ladyland. Randy‘s playing gives me joy and especially this version here, nobody ever did so well! I play with classical musicians and the other day we had a heated discussion when I praised Randy. I managed to convince these classical guys by saying that covering Hendrix so perfect is culturally as "valuable" as playing Mozart or Beethoven perfectly well. I do hope Randy keeps on doing this for a long time and that others will follow. I am convinced that Hendrix will be remembered and played in 200 years and Randy sets the milestone :-)
Indeed bought this LP along with Funkadellics (magot brain) Sons of Chaplin, Moby Grape, Chambers Bros, Johnny winter, Edgar, Derringer, allman bros, Frampton, Day on the green in frisco, lynyrd skynyrd, 60s What a great era of Musicians and music. real music back in the day

There are probably 2 or 3 people on the entire planet that can play this song.. I dont think the audience actually realises what they just experienced... Bravı Randy God bless you and your graet band and you efforts to keep Jimis music alive''!!!
yeah the audience was pretty lame
Yes Randy is great. Now,just imagine watching Jimi perfoming 50 years ago in studio of course.Lucky ones.
Haha YEP I was thinking the same thing.
Seulement Randy Hansen et bien évidemment Hendrix si il était encore vivant !
there are people who are destined by God to carry on where those who were great and have died left off ~ randy hansen is one of them
Incredible version of Hendrix' 1983... by Randy and band. They captured the shifting, sci-fi , psychedelic blues of this masterpiece , that was never played live. Randy is the real deal..awesome guitar player !
Thank u R,h, and band , closest thing to jimi's playing right on 2 U randy n band !!! Play on
Incredible, you ve got to be good and have done your homework to drop this one live like that,…really got the vibe too, really cool
Wonder what Hendrix would say if he were suddenly sitting in the audience watching Randy...
That little smirk and the quiet giggle... "He sounds just like me... that's far out, man."
Randy would conversely shit his pants probably. LOL.
I can't help but feel like Jimi has been with him the whole time.
Jimi would say "Who is that cool cat in the bee-bop hat" hahaha
For any of you who want to bash Randy for being a "so-called" Jimi Tribute Act, I suggest you look into the history of his guitar playing & how he came to be what he is. He absolutely pays true respect to the music & legacy of Jimi unlike many. He's no joke.
RANDY HANSEN'S BAND, to me, and to anyone else worth their salt is not a tribute band.. It's just that this man is so enamoured with Jimi's magic that he simply doesn't want to play anything else other than that which inspires him.. And Who could argue?..
Man, Randy possess' and Channels Jimi like no one else ever has.. You can learn any version of any of Jimi's songs note for note, and not come close to sounding like Jimi.. However, Randy does (without playing note for note).. Its just that Randy is another force of nature and I'm sure he hits his Stratocaster in the style of Jimi that at most times by now is just purely instinctual... Its not necessary to replicate the notes exactly.. In fact, to do so would be philosophically beside the point of being inspired by him in the first place..
If Jimi could get up on stage right now, he still couldn't get it identical to any particular song version, and he wouldn't, and never did want to.. Its about getting into the groove is what's important and let come what may...
I believe that alot of the advanced technical equipment available now which wasn't available to Jimi 50 years ago, Randy seems to have a feel and understanding of the way Jimi would utilise the evolution of the that technology and also having insight into how Jimi would've evolved himself.. Jimi was always looking for the cutting edge equipment (and pushing it to its max) to adopt it into his Electric Church...
Yes, their sound is full of love--like the master's.
Yes but did mum come around on jimi?
Incredible! He took a Hendrix studio song (which Hendrix never played live as far as I know) and played an excellent live version. No Eddie Kramer.
Holy shit. I almost want to cry. Im not a crying type. I got my Jimmy back.
This was a performance that HAD to be done.
Why Jimi never played this live?Just don't get it.

Bless you Randy, and ufowalter.. Jimi smiles when I watch this. I hope y'all keep smiling too.
Thank you, Crow. We will have a big smile on, when we go on tour again. For sure :-)
@@ufowalter I just had an epiphany..lol. Randy has been Jimi longer than Jimi was Jimi. He has been playing Jimi's music longer than Jimi did. And he is damned good at it. I was lucky enough to see Jimi at his last show in the US, At the H.I.C. in Honolulu 8-1-1970.. I treasure that night. I have yet to see Randy live. I am getting a bit old and may not get to. Yes Randy is channeling Jimi. Give Randy a hug for me, tell him "I get it". I am "Experienced"..You guys have kept Jimi 's music alive and it is appreciated by anyone from back in the day..who loved Jimi . Rock on guys.. Stay safe.

One of Jimi's very best songs, in my opinion. Wow, what a fantastic tribute played perfectly!!
Thank you Randy for sharing your incredible talent with us all these long years. And for keeping the spirit of Hendrix alive and well. You are both legends!🔥
Nails it jimi hendrix would be proud
Absolutely Magnificent. Jimi would be so proud.
i think this is arguably the best song ever...i don't think jimi ever did it live, but now we can have an idea of what it would have been like...amazing!
Thank you Randy
ufowalter, Randy, guys, thank you for keeping this music ALIVE. OUTSTANDING!!!
Thank you for comment :-)
I don't know if Jimi ever performed this gem live, but now it doesn't matter.
He has.
Awesome. Totally Awesome.
This was about 2 years before Randy and I first met in West Seattle, Alki Beach ... Where I was living at the time...
Pretty sure Kevin still lives down there...
Yeah so anyways,
For the first 3 years I never really knew that he was international worldwide...
I knew he played Jimi Hendrix stuff and did a couple of his own projects, seen him play at some local Seattle clubs ... Etc...
We've always just interacted as friends and that's always how it's been since then...
Should give anyone who doesn't already know an idea of how genuine and humble this man is...
So yeah,
I've got some cool friends and
I feel that way because of the genuine humility they have in their hearts...
The rest is the bonus
🎶🤘🏼😎🎸🎶
Good Share UFO
Cheers 🥂
Yeah - that´s Randy. Humble genius and a weird happy hippie
Wanna cry. It is .. incredible on stage.
This is so trippy, I’ve watched/ listened to this so many times and every time I’m transported back in time 45 years.

Mercy! Unbelievable. Amazingly good. Thank you Randy!
Randy will never get the notoriety he deserves. What an incredible talent... not to mention his band!
The more I hear I’m more impressed especially the vocals never heard anybody sound like jimmys voice that just puts a stamp on it
I've watched and enjoyed this vid several times, and I have to thank ufowalter for posting and Randy for doing.

Yes, this gent has more feel of Jimi's actual playing, in touch and the effect that created, Thank you Randy Hansen and the band
Thank you, Mike.
WELL PUT MY FRIEND, WELL PUT...
Randy, you have got to be the only person ever to cover this song, ,,,,, ya brutha, ,,, y r so cool, ,,

Excellent playing and singing!
Randy is lucky having a bass player and drummer that know what their doing
Randy is absolutely the best Hendrix guy anywhere. He doesn't imitate him as much as he channels the spirit.
He showed a lot of taste covering this, Hendrix's best composition imo.
Brilliant, my favorite Hendrix track, played almost note perfect.
That was a beautiful piece!.............you guys are IT!! not only each of you, drums, bass, guitar and voice, captured the soul of this song but made JH immortal...AND one more important thing your own personalities
as musicians r there enhancing even more this tune how it should be.....CONGRATULATIONS & thank you for the great time & music.....!!!..you guys are solid & tight a real professional treat to listen and watch .......great to have you guys around and i hope you are to remain for decades more.......I will travel to see you sometime in the next few months..........you guys should open the music awards as a remembrance of JH and your talent and effort through the years.
wow - thanks ;-)
atta1798 it's is as all most Jimi's s really playing though hem
ronald Williams It's the most complete version of this song I've ever heard anyone cover.
Sheri Champagne p.s.- Kevin F. too
1983!!!? I don't think so,......... But Randy Hansen's awesome no matter what year it is! 👈😎🇺🇲
The fact that as the result of many weird and nice coincidences I got to play a Germany tour with him as his bass player is among the biggest achievements my musical self ever experienced. He is the real deal, a kindhearted, giving person and a musician of seemingly indefinite depth. I love him, he's the best.
I saw his show in Dresden about 15 years ago, was that the tour you played on?

Danke Ufo für die tollen Aufnahmen und Musik
Randy, as far as I'm concerned, having grown up in the 60's, having seen Hendrix three times in concert my self, and having listened to his albums, about one million times, and knowing every single lick and rift, I think it would be more difficult to figure out, memorize, and reproduce Hendrix's skill, than to create it originally. Therefore: in my opinion, your the greatest! Thank you.
Extraordinaire ! Quel morceau, merci Jimmy, et quelle performance, merci Randy. Gigantesque.
it,s very Exellent video / C'est vraiment un Excellent vidéo / Merci ! / Thank yoy !
Simply Beautiful and Awesome 😎🎸🥁👍🏽
hello !!
I am speechless. I have been a fan of Randy for years. wish more people knew about him.
These electric church videos are the best sounding recordings Randy has on youtube...great room.
Absolutely breathtaking live rendition of Jimi's soundscape masterpiece, from beginning to end!
Thank you. That´s a great compliment.
Randy! Quel son ! Le trio exceptionnel, le batteur, le bassiste :une vraie connexion 😎
