7 year old me thought 1953 had brought magic to cars with the often teased Studebaker introducing this Space Ship. It did 100 MPH just sitting in a picture. And compared to Chevy, Ford and Chrysler, the Starliner was "IT". Chevy and Ford didn't have a cool car until 1957 and that was the year Studebaker did it again with the Factory Supercharged Hawk. You have just brought 1953 back - great car, nice memories and a SUPER build. Thanks

I believe this car was what caused the big three to go “longer, lower and wider” in the late ‘50’s with Chrysler leading the way with their all new ‘57’s.
GM followed suit with their wild ‘59’s followed by Ford with their very cleanly styled 1960 cars.
It could arguably be said that it was Studebaker that started the “personal car” trend with the ‘53 which Ford picked up on with their ‘55 T-Birds. Ford then switched up and made that a “personal luxury car” with the four seater ‘58’s which the Golden Hawk pretty much competed against.
Stude was waaaaay ahead of their time. Too bad they didn’t have the money to keep things going. You can imagine what neat stuff they could have come up with had they lived on into the ‘70’s and ‘80’s.

Big, usually means it got fat and is too heavy to remove. The little ones are often much more inventive and better.

The two-tone white/turquoise paint job is so 1950s and really highlights the aerodynamic design of the Starliner. Retro and modern at the same time.

VERY NICE and clean Chris! Unless you pointed it out, I never would have even noticed the paint run. 👌🏽
I got to ride in one of these as a kid in the ‘60’s on a regular basis. Actually, it was a 1957-‘58 Studebaker Golden Hawk that was owned by a good family friend.
Same basic shape as that ‘53, but had the tailfins and squared off trunk lid.

I just bought one of these and it's due to arrive in a couple of days. In the spirit of doing it MY WAY, I am going to check if I still have the dual Paxton supercharger parts from an Avanti model I made a couple of decades back. I have wanted the real thing since I was a boy. I was around five years old when the STP ads on TV featured Andy Granatelli's Avanti "Duocento", and I've been a Studebaker nut ever since.

About my aforementioned studebaker models I actually have 3 of them they are: 62 Studebaker lark (previously built by someone else but I bought on eBay, stripped it down and repainted it), the other 2 are the revell 51 Henry j (brand new shrink wrapped) and the AMT Studebaker Avanti also shrink wrapped...

The narrow whitewalls they include in the kit is inaccurate for a 53 era car.Look at the Box art on top of the box. Round 2 should have included the wide whitewall tires that they included in one of their tire parts packs. Otherwise a very nice kit.

Nice. I have a suvivor body only from a kit I did in the sixties. I don't know if the instructions suggested you paint the wheel covers centers black, but factory stock wheel covers from 1953 through 1955 had gold centers. That would be an easy fix and look sharp ( and correct) on your build.

Another tip on this kit. Ever heard of "Studillac?" When Studebaker engineers were considering design for V8 they were given access to Cadillac's engines by GM. Sooo despite Studebaker engine displacement at only 289 C.I.D. with lousy intake and head design - overall block dimensions are identical to Cadillac. Also, Caddy V8 used the same size block all the way to 500 C.I.D using the original block dimensions. To replicate a "Studillac" for a "sleeper" street machine just swap valve covers and and intake for a tricarb intake or quad carb setup. For a drag version both AMT 1959 El Camino and 1949 Ford sedan have "Caddy" engines including superchargers. Have fun!

Cool build. Looks great in stock condition. I don't see many around in my neck of the woods.
Now, I'm not sure if I missed anything from the video, but if you are going to build the drag version, won't AMT provide the drag slicks? It only has one set of tires, and they are stock.

Back when this kit was first issued the "competition" version was a Bonneville "salt flats" car - which may explain why drag slicks are not in the box for this issue. Also, the "chopped" top was for this "flying mile" version, as was the double-blown mill.

Very nice build I really like your color choices . Chris I have a question for you, how do you clean the dust off of your models. After all the care and work to build these great kits I just would like to keep them looking good. Any good ideas? Thank you Sir I really enjoy your channel, always look forward to your new builds every week.

Most are stored so it's a non-issue but dollar store dusters and cans of air work well.

"Keys to the car? Sorry son, you need a few more years under your belt before I let you drive the Starliner."
Once again, the fore and aff shots at 39:25 and 39:27 look like the real car.

That was an odd little car, but it's cute none the less. About the black engine and olive engine, could it be that one of the engine was an option, like a 440 or a Hemi, so they'd have their own color?

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

As far as I know it was this V8 or a 6cyl as the options.

Hard to believe this kit debuted as part of 60's "Trophy Series - at a time when most "annuals" were mostly based on promos! For the era design and features were a major advance. R2 obviously has made an effort to "freshen" this one up - tit has been reissued many times over the years. Too bad decals come up short regarding stock scripts, trim, hub cap centers, etc....
