The risk of not flushing air from the system has nothing to do with wear and tear on the starter motor or battery. It's the risk of damage to the high pressure fuel pump downstream of the filter, which is not designed to deal with entrained air.

You fill the canister just by pouring the diesel or injector cleaner on the top of the filter and letting it flow to the sides. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.
You could either top off the fuel filter canister withe diesel or diesel injector cleaner. If you don't, you'll be cranking for a bit until the canister fills and fuel reaches the injectors.

Unless it's winter and your fuel is gelled up, I wouldn't.

Dont you have to prime the fuel pump?
