One word--Wow! Even in its unfinished state, it is very evocative of the place and time. In fact, it makes me homesick for my youth in the 70s and 80s in the Pittsburgh area.

DJ thanks for the tour and I guess I'm over a year late. I don't think I have ever seen your entire layout. Looks like you're going to have a nice addition. I am from Ohio and lived about 35 minutes west of Pittsburgh. If I had to equal trains to a city it would be Pittsburgh easily. You've done a great job of catching the essence of that area. Keep the progress coming.

I really hate industrial, polluted areas, but man! If you're gonna model 'em, do it like you've done! This is just amazingly well done. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see what you do with those Pennsylvania mountains.

I watched your video on "The Flat Layout" and found your words to be very true. Nicely he! I think in modern times had you derailed or even had a knuckle break the train would have automatically gone into emergency stop. I still liked the video and my favorite locomotives are the EMD switchers MP15ACs, SW1500s, MP15DCs. I've liked the ever since I was a kid and read the book "Your Freight Trains" written and illustrated by George J. Zaffo. The book itself is sixty years old copyright 1958 and I first read it in a Carnegie Library in my hometown. It documents the New Haven Railroad. It has several illustrations Alco S1s and S4s that run open face out . Its neat to see the engineer at the controls and this was back in the day when firemen were next inline to operate the locomotives. I had always been obsessed with finding that book and it took me fifty years to find it. I had been searching on and off but through the miracle of the internet and EBay I found two copies of the aforementioned book. The truth be know I ended up with all of Mr. Zaffo's books to find the one I was looking for but, it is truly a pearl of great price. Again I enjoyed your video and look forward to what you've done in the future.

The last layout update was in march, but my tutorials all have shown some new areas of the layout. I'm working on the roundhouse scene mostly now. I have been cranking out at least 2-3 videos a month, some on how the railroad works. I have some other ideas on paper I hope you like. Whats challenging is trying to do these with CSX ringing my phone, lol.

You have done an amazing job capturing this area. As a courier for a medical group, I pass the Union RR yard 6 times a day and have taken lots of photo’s of that area. My dad spent 40 years at USS Duquesne. So m very familiar with that area as well. PS i also worked at Edgar Thompson in the old open hearth area while in college. I hope you get the new red and yellow paint scheme and caboose that they use now.

Hey DJ the layout is looking Good and coming along nicely. I really like the engine facility and the turntable. I am planing a layout to built soon in N scale and I am very interested in Yard operations and set ups. Like the Fueling and Sanding Faculties, How do they get the sand into the towers and do they pump from tank cars into the fuel tanks. I have been using google maps to look at a few yards, but it is a liitle hard to know what I am looking at. What other common things will you find in a service yard? RIp track, wash racks, team tracks, MOW vechicles, paint shops? have you already done a video on yards operations? I see in most yards turntables, reversing loops or a WYE, So I assume that is common thing. Is there any type of standards, or logic to yard setups you can share with me? Thanks for all your info and your videos they are greatly appreciated and happy holidays to you and your family.

DJ, Very nice layout tour, the layout looks great. You know I have to, being a fan of "The Little Giant" ;-) in 1987 those tracks running under the Port Perry Bridge on the ET side of the Mon river still belonged to the P&LE, CSX had trackage rights over the P&LE between Mckeesport and New Castle. The ramp track from the ET works up to the Port Perry bridge (Union Railroad track closest to the Mon river and P&LE tracks) was known as the "Cinder Bridge", because all the Cinder pots left the ET works using that track on their way to the Cinder dump in West Mifflin. If you have Rich Borkowski's Union Railroad in Color book, check out the photos of the Port Perry bridge on pages 52, 53, 60 & 61. DJ, you have done an excellent job of capturing the look and feel of the Union Railroad. Very impressive modeling with the engine facilities in Hall and I agree that Kato turntable looks fantastic. I'm looking forward to your next video update. Cheers, Rich S.

When I was in my early 20's I went to their office in Monroeville. I asked the HR lady if they were hiring. She responded "we aren't hiring, and if we were, we'd hire the engineer's kids first". I said "That's nepotism", to which she responded "...and your point???"
So that is why I never got hired in the early 1990's. I hired with CSX in 1999. I am always thinking of new video ideas. The book "union Railroad in color" is still my all time favorite book.

Always a great video, get some great ideas to apply to my 2x4 layout, could you have a video or tell my how to apply distance between towns or landmarks so they don’t look like there on top of each other, like a town and a bridge that are 5 miles apart but with limited space it looks like there next to each other, it would be a great leaning video

2 words. scenic dividers. I have a video on them. Its easier than you think and it works to separate towns or themes. Last night a friend asked how he can do a coal mine and a industrial area in a small layout. By using a divider he can have the mine on one side an industrial on other.

Nice layout! Question for you: at Port Perry, you have a bridge going over the train tracks (the one with the bottle car on it). The bridge is just flat and thin. Is this modeled after something in real life? Or is it just "not completed" yet?
I ask because I have a section on my layout wherein I want that look (I don't want a truss or plate girder bridge)
If that section of your bridge is based on something in real life, then I can justify my railroad having the same type of bridge on my layout.

It was a "good enough for now" thing. Sometimes the prototype is too hard to compress so I just improvise. If you google map Edgar Thomson Steel mill in Braddock, Pa, you can see the real one. More of a girder, but I would have clearance issues.

So a white and black wire from layout to reverser two wires to DCC controller wheres the connection to the power supply (outlet) ?? also thinking of modeling conway yard north of Pittsburg west side of river any ideas or suggestions ???

I would like to drone conway, but there is nowhere good to park and set up without causing attention. Considering the area is miles long, simply pick the things that stand out to you most to model. Just go for the feel of the area, because if you try to match it too much, you'll go nuts.

DJ, not sure what an auto reverser does. Can you explain? Also
where did you purchase it? Thanks, Bill from Pittsburgh

auto reverser works for when you change the polarity of the rails, such as a wye, reverse loop, or turntable. I got it at the hobby store in jeannette. www.needztrains.com

Such a cute intro with your daughter. Morgan got into the acting 100%... or WAS it acting? Did you name her after the magical lady, Morgan leFay? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan_le_Fay
Hey, you talked about going HO some time. I wonder if you've seen this layout. It's BNSF "imaginary prototype," and man oh man! I know you'll like it.
