The French adopted the Berthier in the 1890's as a possible replacement for the 1886 Lebel rifle. It didn't take long for the once forward thinking Lebel to become obsolete with the advent of the internal box magazine.

Actually having a "pregnant guppy" version of this carbine that doesn't have the 1916 conversion is pretty cool. The history of the Berthier is pretty much backward from any other rifle developed since the French always thought an autoloader was less than a decade away and they didn't want to invest heavily in something they thought would soon be obsolete. It started out as a calvary carbine, then the long rifle was made and sent to the colonies since it was cheaper to produce and easier to maintain than the Lebel, and finally produced en masse during the war after French soldiers saw the Senegalese colonials actually had superior rifles to them. Berthier did find the Goldilocks with the clip... The German commission rifle clips were too flimsy and the Austrian Mannlicher clips were too expensive. The spring steel clip (same process later used in the US for the Garand clip) was simple to make and cost a half penny each to produce.

Thank you so much for the video and info on the Berthier! My grandfather served in WW2 and brought home one of the conversion models in his duffel bag. No import stamps here either! :) It is an important link to his military service and experience in the European theater and I appreciate ownership of this little piece of of history. You can imagine my surprise and delight to see you feature and shoot this French classic for your audience, but especially for the personal connection I have with this firearm. It was the very rifle that he used to teach me as a young man how to handle, maintain and respect firearms. With that said, bravo Tim on highlighting this particular rifle, and keep the excellent channel content coming!

This feels just like going shooting without leaving the house, very nice. Ive always wondered what that shell could do in a modern rifle even an ackly imp version. Its just so big to start with, theres potential there. I had a Remington Berthier M1907/15 sporter. The Remington Berthier is notorious for oversized chambers & cracked recievers, as it turns out mine had both. I had been shooting it with cracked rcvr unknowingly , then sold it to a friend, he showed me the crack, u had to look real close but there it was on the bottom. He gave me the cracked rcvr back, i gave him a M1916 replacement carb. They were only around $50. I still have a M1886/93 & reload for it😊

The sights on the MLe 1916 were for course application in both day and night. The 'v' is actually for the application of radium paint. On the edges of the rear 'V' you will notice two dimples that are also for that same application. One of the first integral night sight designs.

I tell everyone that I have an M16, then I show the a picture of the MLE M16 receiver stamp. 5 shot , very little armory work, not chamber reamed , matching numbers. I love shooting this gun but it does have heavy recoil. Shoots reloads a whole lot better than the PPU. Good to know the 3 round clips work, I'll have to get some . 5 rounders are almost impossible to get without getting screwed on the price when you can find them. Love the old guns. Yours runs pretty good. Thanks for all the good info.

@Military Arrms Channel, The Mle1916 front sight was designed for the realities of trench warfare. It was designed for quick target shots at close to mid - range. Think of them as a grandfather to combat pistol sights only on a rifle. From Point blank trench raid. To repelling a trench attack at night to mid range combat 150 to 250 yards. The notch in the front sight was strictly for use in cases of when precise long range shots might be necessary. Forgotten weapons videos on the Mle1916
are an excellent reference. Bloke on the range has an excellent video as well.

Very interesting. I have a Berthier carbine that dad brought back from WWII from the time he was in France. He thought it was a newer model. However, it will not accept a 5 round clip and it is marked as 1898. Like your older one, it has an open oval shaped hole for ejecting the clip and no top wood. However, it does have the notched front sight, rather than the blade front sight. Now I know I need to find a 3 round clip, if I can ever find more ammo. I've been told the company in Eastern Europe that was making it discontinued it a couple of years ago.

Ron Shekelson they tended to adopt things a little too quickly so it would be extremely good the day it came out but outdated a few years later. For example the lebel was the first smokeless powder rifle but the magazine was outdated a few years later even the lebel cartridge was a necked down 11mm black powder down to 8mm a relic a decade later because it was the first big smokeless cartridge ever produced.

I like your video's on the "latest n greatest" of firearms because you give your honest opinion. But i also enjoy the history and designs that led to the newest technology. Just my ll cents.

Got a soft spot for old mil-surps, carbines in particular. 6.5 carcano is the only one I've actually got my hands on though. Some time in her life she got bubba'd up a bit but she still stacks those rounds.

Inherited one of these from my grandpa. Long barrel. Having a hard time finding ammo and enbloc for it In my area. Sweet rifle though and cool video!

I like the old warhorses better than the new stuff. New stuff once in a while is o.k., but the history and the toughness of the old stuff is just more interesting to me.

By the way, about the de-cocker rather than a safety, French doctrine at the time was to carry rifles with an empty chamber, so essentially the fact that you could slip while de-cocking the carbine is irrelevant since they weren’t use in that way.
