    The MAS 36 was intended for second line troops. The plan was to provide semi-auto MAS 40 for first line troops.
    But France started re-arming too late.
    So MAS 40 was put on hold after the defeat, hidden from the Germans, and resumed as MAS 44, then MAS 49 and MAS 49/56...

      Yes, France re-armed to late, because Germany not giving indemnity to France for destroying all her industry, remember all the industry of France was concentred on the Est of the territory and destroyed systematically by Germans at WW1.
      Germany never payed nothing for those actions, and United States of America also prevented French to enter in Germany at the end of the world war 1 (a reason why a lot of Germans never accepted this defeat and thinked this defeat was the fault of their politicals).
      USA also having arrogated all the benefits of the victory for them, even if they entered very late in the war and does almost nothing.
      But the president of USA told to France: don’t worry we come to help you if German attack you again, to make France accept that.
      Of course, when France was invaded, they did not do it. They entered war late only because of pearl harbor and never respected their words.
      But this is not all, you can push this reasoning farer, USA also covered Germany when she is not paying the indemnity to France but also financed the reconstruction of Germany from 1918 to 1939 (so USA literally armed Nazis against France).
      So yes, France re-armed late. Because she was stabed in the back by her « allies ».

    The Maginot wasn't meant to be impregnable. It was meant to be enough of a deterrent to deflect the fighting to Belgium; away from the industry and steel in Alsace-Lorraine (and French soil). The French school of thought at the time held that in total war, victory would belong to the country with the greater total industrial output and resources, which is pretty much correct.

    I love the simplicity of the MAS bolt when it comes to field stripping. This rifle is really the best of bolt action rifles from around the world, borrowing the two locking lug bolt from the SMLE, the turned down handle and peep sight from the M1917, and the five round magazine/stripper clip from the Gew98.

    • @MrTangolizard
      @MrTangolizard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Milsurp Mike Channel how is a 5 round stripper clip the best the no4 can hold 10 rounds which is far better than 5

    • @MilsurpMikeChannel
      @MilsurpMikeChannel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although it could hold 10, they never changed out mags on the Enfields and loaded them with 5 round chargers, which are a bit more cumbersome than the Mauser stripper clips.

    I had several 36 and 35/51. My favorite was the plain 36. While I reformed cases for reloading I couldn't get loads to shoot to point of aim, I drilled rear sight to accept spent 22 cases and drilled cases at different spots to sort of make sight semi adjustable. They are great rifles.

    The model 44 is an absolute beauty. Probably the best looking semiauto battle rifle (along with the FN 49). And to think that it was developped in the 1930s (and, madly, there was provision to use the box mag from a FM 24/29 Chatellerault, a 7.5mm 30 round mag)

    My great father and it's brother used the MAS36 in WWII, my father used it in Algeria and i have a 1946 one with the original manual from this rifle and i'm amazed that the legend is "no safety because you're supposed to not load before contact".
    The manual clearly stated that it was a 5+1 rifle. Just like the Lebel was an 8+2 rifle. You load a cartridge in the chamber and 5 in the magazin. The mechanism and action are heavy to not have accidental fire and that's it. The french didn't wanted safety because they didn't trust the first gen of safety and though in the stress of fighting a soldier could forget to unlock it.

    Something to make note of: the early 36’s had an open front sight with protective ears just like the 51. The round hood was a post ww2 feature on the 36’s.

    • @frankpolly
      @frankpolly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the fully hooded sight was introduced in 1944 when the St. Entienne factory was ready to produce the rifles again and they updated the rifle slightly. My mas36 is an early 1945 production and has the fully hooded sight. So more of a late ww2 feature.

      @@highliter97 I've got my grandpa's bringback MAS36 from his time in the US army on the western front, it's a 1940 example. It has the front sight as you described, more milled parts including the magazine trap door, and the rear sight that's adjusted by pushing down on the leaf instead of having a button like later models. The finish on the metal also seems glossier than later models, but that might just be from use. The sling attachment points on the fore end also seem to be of a different design. I think it's from the H-series of serial numbers, which means it's from the last batch that had no potential involvement by occupation or collaborationist governments, which is nice. This one says 1940, so it was made before July of that year. So, was probably part of the rush to rearm. Interesting little bit of history.

    Mas 36 rear sights are labeled. One way to adjust zero is you have to replace them.
    N = 0 (centered) -4 or +4 will bring the group 135mm down or up at 200 meters -8 or +8 will bring the group 270mm down or up at 200 meters D4 or G4 will move the group 135mm to the right or to the left at 200 meters D8 or G8 will move the group 270mm to the right or to the left at 200 meters
    D = Droite/Right, G = Gauche/Left
    Good luck finding them but they are out there.

    The "grittiness" you feel on the bolt is from the refurbishment program that Parkerized the bolts. If you cycle the action enough it will wear down. If you get one that hasn't been refinished or even better a nice WWII correct one you can definitely feel the difference. I have a nice all original and matching 1940 made example and it's one of my smoothest cock on open bolt actions I own.

    When in the second fully upright position. This is for heavier direct fire grenades. 25, 50, 75, 100 meters.

    The MAS 36 bolt is smoother than the Mosin by far. Rifles that have seen some use are actually quite smooth and the bolt throw is very short. With some break-in and practice, they can be shot as quickly as a Lee Enfield. Also, the aluminum French stripper clips are easier to use than the Mauser clips IMHO.

    I've got a early-1940 manufacture MAS-36 that my grandpa brought back to the US after his tour on the western front. It seems like there are a few differences from the one you're shooting here, though some of it might be user error on my part:
    1. The action on mine is actually very smooth, even without much lubrication. The one you're using seems very noisy and crunchy when you cycle it, maybe there's a difference between earlier and later models there. Maybe mine is just more broken in from 70+ years of use or is a relatively smooth-cycling example. I do notice that the bolt is fairly wobbly when pulled all the back, and if you give it too much lateral pressure in the wrong direction when trying to push it back into battery it'll tend to catch ever-so-slightly on some surface in the receiver. Maybe that extra wobble it gets when all the way back lets it twist far enough to start rubbing against the ejector claw or something. I find it's smoothest to put a bit of sideways tension to the right as you push the bolt forwards, and nothing seems to get hung up.
    2. When the magazine is empty, I can close the bolt on an empty chamber without needing to manually push the follower down. Maybe another difference between older and newer models? I like the idea of that feature acting as an empty magazine indicator, I wish my MAS behaved that way.
    3. Maybe I'm just afraid of messing up the stripper clip and I'm not giving it enough juice, but my MAS doesn't seem to eject the clip automatically when closing the bolt. Maybe it requires a round in the magazine to push it out of the way, but I'd rather not load a live round in my house to test at the moment:).
    Thanks for the fun video!

    @Military Arms Channel I have a MAS MLE1936 .308 I I made a light load for it and shot it. I think it has a less kick then my modern bolt action .308. I like it a lot

    Lovely stuff...I'd love to see the gear issued with these; I'm curious as to how the magazines for the MAS1944 with that big ol' clip were carried.

    I had one that didn’t go through the French refurb process, all matching, and it was much smoother. I think they sandblasted the bolts and it made them rough.

    I really liked the MAS 36 I used to have. It was a very handy little bolt gun, but ultimately since I do like taking some of my milsurps hunting and hiking, the lack of a manual safety was a real turn-off. (Didn't figure out it lacked one until I brought it home) And as neat as the 7.5 French round is, I kinda got tired of being relegated to buying PPU ammo online and then reloading the spent cases from said spent PPU cases. I'd love to have on of those 44 or 49 semi auto rifles, but I really don't care to get back into 7.5 French; and I hear the converted .308 versions CAI did have a pretty poor reputation.

    The 1st rifle shown is a "2nd type" mas 36 not the pre war model, you can tell from the design of both front and rear sights.

  • @Alcochaser

    The MAS36 wasn't even intended to be the front line rifle. The MAS40 was intended to be the front line rifle. The MAS36 was supposed to be like out M1 carbine, for support troops. However. They didn't get the MAS40 into production until the day the germans invaded. The Mas40 became the MAS44

    I love these old military bolt gun videos, would like to hear a bit more about the cartridges they are chambered in though. Just a suggestion

    • @DevinAlden
      @DevinAlden 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mas 36 was chambered in 7.5 french. Very similar to 7.62 nato in terms of ballistics. Later on a lot of mas 36 were chambered to 7.62 nato which some of them were done poorly. Ppu I believe is the only manufacturer that makes 7.5 french still.

    So it's actually really hard to get one, but the original sling for the MAS36 is actually a natural tan color, the mustard color ones are for the 49/56. I'm still trying to find an actual tan one for my MAS36.

    It’s insane that the French were on the cusp of developing a reliable semi auto rifle when WW1 STARTED, but didn’t even have enough “modern” bolt actions to arm their forces in WW2!
