They are inspired by the 300 Spartans and Roman Germanic Bodyguards.
Janisaries would fit more, taken from birth, founded to protect the ruler.
they're basically a mix of many ancient elite armies, two notable is:
-raised from birth like ottoman janissaries
-kept at a number of 10000 like the persian immortals
That applies to many historical units, yeah.

I read a story, where during the Fall of Cadia, Angron, Daemon Primarch Angron, the 2nd most angry being in the setting behind Skarbrand itself, that Angron, was facing down the Necron Lord Trazyn the Infinite and the army he led, when Trazyn decided to pull a exhibit from his collection of great warriors into play, a fully armored, fully armed, red cloaked Custodes, fresh from the Horus Heresy, ready and able for the fight ahead. In that moment, Angron, realizing what he was looking at, was said to have suddenly gone stone still, a aura of calm overcoming him, and was heard to mutter "I think I am needed elsewhere." before turning and *leaving the battlezone.*
At the prospect of fighting a 30k Custodian *Angron the Daemon Primarch decided he needed to go turn the oven he left on off and **ran**.*

Honestly it was probably a massive relief to Guliman to meet up with the Custodes, the only other force in the Imperium that knows the Emperor as he does, and knows the original Imperial Truth. It's one of the best parts of Guliman's revival that he's been struggling with coping with the state of the Imperium as a fanatically religious theocracy when the last thing he remembered before his time in stasis was an Imperium still devoted to the Imperial Truth

Can confirm, there was a blood raven that did try to scout out something the blood ravens could steal from them. That blood raven was never seen again. But I have saw instances of a custodie that was shorter than the others. Strange.

I love the fact that for every battle and grand feat that they've completed they get a new name added to theirs. That just make me imagine a custode's getting some weapons mixed up and spending hours reading the names to see if it's theirs
Imagine you are a guardsman. Assigned to a fort on some forgotten moon. You have been protecting this dark rock for reasons you don’t know for more than 4 years. Yet, you hadn’t seen a single xeno. When you joined the guardsmen, you expected to serve the emperor by shooting down some Xeno and caring out your ultimate Duty until death. But you hadn’t seen a single one… you desperately wished each day to hear the sirens that screamed the beginning of a battle. You wished it Until… it was granted. And oh how you would come to regret this wish and despise the fact that it came true.
You are woken up by blaring sirens. You quickly spring from your bed, dawn your flak armor, pick up your lasgun and at your commanding officer's orders you are stationed at the north side of the fortress in a bunker just outside the main defenses.
This is it! It’s finally time for you to exact your duty. To slaughter the dirty xeno and serve the emperor with fire and flame.
The bunker is armed with an autocanon, the 3 guardsmen who have lived inside this bunker are busy loading and moving ammo to the autocannon. You join them to quickly ready the armaments as your commanding officers shouts orders.
Suddenly, a squad of guardsmen barges In carrying a heavy bolter and a flamer and proceeded to quickly mount the weapons at the bunker’s firing position.
You wonder what kind of threat it must be to require a heavy bolter on top of an autocanon and 2 flamers. But you guess that it’s just taking precautions. The uneaz still bothers you, though.
After 2 grueling hours of complete silence, you wonder if the enemy will actually attack. You start mocking the xeno in your head… and as if your mind were read, an eardrum bursting screech sounds out in the whole fort.
You wonder if this was some kind of a sonic weapon… if so it was rather ineffective, only alerting the enemy of its presence. After another 10 minute wait you finally see the first enemy. Although you can’t make out what it is, you fire your las gun at your commanding officers order along with your brethren. The xeno absorbed more than a few las gun shots before going down… but you didn’t have the time to think what kind of monster could take so many shots to kill because the numberless hordes charging towards your bunker is illuminated by las gun fire. Only then you realize why a heavy bolter was needed alongside an autocannon. Seeing the herd, you come to understand that even the heavy bolter can’t hold it back for long. Despite this, as the autocannon and the heavy bolter start firing, the recklessly charging horde is shredded into menace meat. Each shot taking out 2 or 3 xeno. It’s soon becomes apparent that lasguns are useless against such monsters and if the heavy bolter and the autocannon stop firing, there will be no chance to survive.
You look on as the hordes are massacred and gain hope that victory might be possible. But as if to mock your thoughts again, tiny insect like spores rain down towards the bunker to try and stal the 2 heavy weapons. The 2 flamers are ordered to burn the spores to ash. Although this works at the beginning, the time needed to reload the flamers allows the spores to clog up the autocannon causing its loading bay to burst open after it was fired when still clogged up. Thankfully, the heavy bolter is still actively massacring the monsters and keeping them at bay.
But as the time to reload the bolter comes, it becomes apparent that each reload will allow the monsters to gain ground.
After numerous minutes of onslaught, the monsters have come close enough that, their blaring teeth and fangs, reflect the light from the las gun fire.
Finally, one of the monsters makes it past your bunker. And as if a dam has finally given way, more and more beasts make flood past your bunker. Occasionally, few stoping to attack it.
As the bunker is quickly overrun, you lose all hope of survival. The bolter and flamers had long since stopped firing, and everyone but you had died. You had locked yourself inside the supply room of the bunker, hoping for someone, something to save you.
As you come to realize that no one will and lose all hope of survival, after an hour of hiding, you decide to confront the screeching fiends outside. You wish to at least die in the light and embrace the emperor’s light at the end.
You take your lasgun and rush out of the bunker. Just outside the entrance, you are faced with a 2-meter monster with knives for teeth and limbs ending in vicious, metallic claws… you try to fire at the monster but, it Merely slaps you away. As the monster looms over you and your last thoughts come to mind, you see a golden light strike down between the bunker and the main defenses. The light causes the fiend to turn away in alert, allowing you enough Time to aim your lasgun and continuously shoot it in the head. After a whole mag, it finally lets out a final screech and dies.
As the other fiends near you notice and charge forth, you ready yourself for death… satisfied by your accomplishment. As a monster’s claw was about to pierce your chest, you feel powerful winds blow past your front, powerful enough that you are blown back 3 meters… you pathetically fall onto your butt, bewildered at the strange occurrence. As you come to your senses and open your eyes, you behold carnage. Tho, unexpectedly, not of your own body. Hundreds of beasts lay slaughtered, bisected, torn to pieces or just sludge of gore and blood on the ground.
Primordial fear washes over you… what could have done that, in a matter of seconds without even making a sound? Or rather, could anything do that?
Fully coming to your senses, you finally register the dying screeches behind you. You jerk your head at the source of the unmistakable sounds of massacre and…
Awe takes over you, replacing any inclining of fear as you are born witness to a golden giant swinging his spear, slicing several xeno with a single swing. He then stands tall, assessing the situation and locating his next prey. As you look upon him, you feel as though he is glistening with golden light. Not see it… feel it. You feel the being glow with warm, golden light. His spear, is too, glistening… However, not with golden light, but rather blue lightning. Even from far you are awe strack by the meticulous caving’s on the spear… you look over at the wielder once more, this time the golden light no longer present… and this time the majestic form of the golden warrior is finally revealed to you in its entire glory. You have no words to describe what it looked like. Only that you were struck breathless by its majestic countenance and its dominating presence.
But that’s all you are permitted to see… that’s the only second you get as the golden warrior becomes a storm of momentum once again…he moves faster than your eyes can follow, but you can still see The golden giant continue his onslaught whit in the enemy ranks leaving nothing but mangled and bisected corpses behind. His massacre is like a magical dance. Each step, each movement is nothing short from perfection. Not a single movement wasted… dodging and attacking at the same time, weaving through the enemy lines, so each swing is as effective as possible. A gore filled dance that would persist until the monsters would yield to his great spear.

The emperor's bodyguards are like the Roman Praetorian Guards of the Roman empire.
In my opinion I think they are more of a mix of a few, such as the Ottoman Janasaries, being taken from birth to be trained, and the Persian Immortals, who kept their numbers at exactly ten thousand to give the impression that none of them died, Swiss Guard, and even as you said, Praetorian Guard
One thing that they have not in common with the pretorian guard is being responsible of the death of 25% of the roman emperors

During the Siege of Terra when they teleport to the Vengeful Spirit. Only around 1k custodes remained. Only valdor and a few others teleported with the emperor. Along with dorn, sanguinius, some blood angels and imperial fists
The dark angels also were part of the destruction of the Thunder warriors.
They only fought Ursotan's group. There were like a dozen of them at most.
While Custodes likely killed thousand of Thunder Warriors on Ararat.
