- For the past month, I have been absolutely obsessed with Twin Peaks. I would describe myself as much more of a movie person than a TV person. It takes a lot for me to get into a show, basically if it doesn’t hook me straight away, I’ll quickly give up on it.
I had first heard of Twin Peaks through Letterboxd, seeing it was one of the highest rated things on the whole website. Twin Peaks had me hooked like no other show I had ever seen before. Anyway, this is why Twin Peaks might just be the best thing I have ever seen.

Watching season 3 as it came out in 2017 was incredible. Turning the episodes in my head week by week as I waited for the next one was one of the best experiences of my life. It’s my favourite show because I’ll never be able to stop thinking about it.
I couldn’t imagine the hype and suspense of waiting for every episode week by week. I watched about 5 episodes a day and I couldn’t wait to watch more.
Amen to that. Twin Peaks legit still keeps me awake at night sometimes. It's One of A Kind and Hauntingly Unforgettable.
@@SilverShade1008 If you managed to see explanations, you'd see that the third season was all about "This is not Twin Peaks, TV doesn't exist anymore, new shows are like truck drivers hitting kids on full speed, etc." - not from the place of *actual* light. My personal impressions aligned perfectly with what the creators thought of that specific episodes, and I guess meanings and understand ppl like Lynch all the time madly well.

The final episode of The Return will live rent free in my head for the rest of my life. Episode 17 was like, oh cool, everything is wrapped up nicely and then here comes episode 18.

After finishing Alan Wake II, I decided that it was finally time to watch the show that inspired some of my favorite games of all time (the stuff made by Remedy Entertainment). This was, hands down, one of the best decisions I've ever made lol.
Rewatching the show for the very first time right now and I'm trying to take it slower, and savor the moments.
Something that was VERY unexpected to me was seeing just how goddamn funny this show can be. And not just one kind of funny, either. We got physical hijinks, to absurd comedic stuff, witty dialogue, dark comedy, and (maybe my favorite)... Unintended comedy lol. Some scenes are just so bizarre that they're funny, but it's always sincere.
But yeah. I love this show so much. S03 very much blew my mind.

Spot on on the unintentional comedy! I just love it how when some genuinely tragic or dramatic/melodramatic scenes that were meant to evoke sadness etc. - they just make me struggle not to laugh. Like the scenes with Andy where he's crying out of the blue with a camera and then at the train car. LOL All of these characters and acting is very bizarre and that's why I love it so much.
@@SolitaryHipster777 I don't think it's unintentional at all. Lynch is doing two or three things at the same time. Grace Zabriskie once said that someone asked her about the scene when she was calling Leland and crying on the phone in the pilot. The reporter asked her if she didn't see comedy in the way she played that scene. She said that she could definitely see a comic element. The reporter then said, "Oh, so you were PLAYING it for laughs, then?" Grace was so annoyed. She said that the reporter couldn't tell there was something in between tragic, and playing it for laughs. (I'm old enough now that all the most tragic moments of my life have that element of comic absurdity to them at the same time. In a weird, Lynchian way, he's being quite realistic when he interweaves tragic and comic.)
@@greyeyed123Laghter is a fear response. I think it makes a lot of sense for that scene to generate laughter as well as discomfort. It's such a striking performance.
I would say that I'm glad Twin Peaks is still finding new audiences, but it's so good that was never going to be an issue. I was early teens when it came out and, even after all the series of everything since then, it's still my favourite. I re-watch it every few years, it's just glorious. Great vid, thanks.

If you're not familiar with the rest of David Lynch's work, you might not notice how much of season 3 references it. It seems like he put a reference to everything he ever did in there; his music, his painting, even his weather reports and his cartoons. On a level seperate from the story, the whole thing can be seen as a retrospective exhibition of Lynch's entire creative life. I haven't seen many if any people talking about this but it's all over it.
FBI "Director" Gordon Cole obviously doubles as a representation of Lynch himself, and he even sends himself up occasionally. Such as commenting on how often his collaborators over the years have happened to be beautiful young women (the actress in question, Chrysta Bell, was also his most recent musical collaborator at the time) - "I'm old school, Albert", he says.
There is a scene where Gordon and Diane are sharing a smoke, which is simply Lynch paying tribute to Laura Dern and the work they did together. The scene where Diane delivers her harrowing monologue while Gordon peers at her from behind his machines is surely a reference to their working relationship, especially making Inland Empire. There's even a scene where Gordon does a drawing that looks like The Angriest Dog In The World. All the actors he has admired and worked with are featured, or as many as he could get - even the ones who were dying or already dead are worked into the story somehow. So too are the musicians he worked with.
On this level you could read Twin Peaks as a very personal thing, a huge expression of gratitude from David Lynch to all his friends and collaborators, a thank you to everyone who ever helped him in his career.
That’s a nice way to look at it. I watched twin peaks before any of Lynch’s other films so I’m interested to see how many I can spot on rewatch.

I saw the whole thing back in November, and I was absolutely mesmerized. I couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks.
I lost count the amount of times I heard the main theme over and over again.

The ending scene of the final of season 3 left me heartbroken, no other serie left me with that kind of feeling

Imagine having to wait a quarter century for the sequel season like a lot of us did. Imagine it being part of your mental furniture for most of your life. Twin Peaks is my favorite all time show. It's often frustrating, but I've never obsessed over another series as much from week to week, both as a kid when it originally aired and in 2017. I'm glad to see new fans are still finding it.
I couldn’t imagine how fans of the original show felt when it was announced there was a new series after 25 years, wild.
This show had me hooked from the first minute when it first aired back in the day. Season 3 was no disappointment either.

@@GarlicOrangeFilms It truly was. We would invite friends over for viewing parties each week, and the next day, everyone at work would be combing over the details. There had been other shows sort of like that (Dallas, for example), but nothing so singularly off-kilter as Twin Peaks. It was unprecedented. The fact that Lynch (whose films I loved already) was suddenly so "mainstream", simply in terms of public reach, seemed insane at the time.
There's simply nothing that can hold a candle to Twin Peaks in terms of the way it challenges the viewer and the world it creates. I'm still shocked this was ever on network television! I agree that Dale Cooper is one of the best characters of all time! I recommend checking out the books too. The entire Twin Peaks corpus is something that can be returned to again and again and get something different every time you experience it!

I recently watched all 48 episodes + 1 movie and after watching Twin Perfect's 4h35mins of explanations on Twin Peaks I'm obsessed, I've never seen anything like it before, it's crazy somethig like this used to air in the early 90's... I might rewatch everything after the Twin Perfect explanations, everything the guy points out in that video is mindblowing and makes perfect sense

holy shit, it’s so cool that this was made literally 4 days ago. i’ve watched the first two seasons and the movie but i wasn’t super into season three however i do plan on rewatching soon and hope to enjoy it more👍
It’s definitely a weird one. If you liked the movie then there’s a chance you would enjoy the rest of season 3.

I agree with you. I've watched a couple of episodes a few years ago but didn't get into it right away because I was way more used to the mainstream stuff and Lynchs style is very different to say the least. Several years later I've watched it again with a new perspective and was tired of the current Hollywood mainstream movies and this time I got the hype. It was such a refreshing experience. I've taken notes to keep on track with the characters and the story but it was still confusing in a good way. Twin Peaks really sucked me into that surreal corner of filmmaking and made me become an admirer of David Lynchs work even if I don't like everything he did. I'm very excited to rewatch the entire series again one day though I'm sad I won't be able to experience it for the first time again.
Yeah I think the same. It’s such a refreshing series compared to any of the crap that comes out of current Hollywood.

I agree. The Return is 18 hours of pure David Lynch brilliance. Mulholland Dr. happens to be my favorite film of all time.

@@GarlicOrangeFilms Lost Highway is great but I feel like similar themes are explored more comprehensively in Mulholland Dr., but I suppose Lynch's films are highly subjective. I should say though, it is fairly widely regarded as one of Lynch's best works and as one of the greatest films of all time. It was ranked 8th in the 2022 Sight & Sound critics' poll of the best films ever made, and also topped a 2016 BBC poll of the best films since 2000.
@@GarlicOrangeFilms Oh I should also probably add that originally Mulholland Dr. was going to be a spinoff series of Twin Peaks and takes place in the same dimension or whatever.
As a lover of Twin Peaks and being their the night the pilot aired and every episode since…what killed me about the return is that it pretty much exists outside what I loved about the show…Twin Peaks. Nothing actually takes place there. The little tags at the end with the bar and jukebox doesn’t really count. I would have preferred a new mystery befalling the town. Keep it simple. But, that’s just my blue velvety dream.

I had a week or so to camp in my home in front of the TV, and I kept watching the Peaks. I barely got to the end, just to save up some kindlings to start the inferno once again.
I know the basic script, but the show isn't about that, but the script is like the spoon that lets my limp body get some of the nourishing soup.
I know about construction worker like a log lady... They still got paid.

Twin Peaks is goated. I started with Fire Walk with Me and still found great enjoyment with the first two seasons. I even enjoyed the non-Lynch episodes, which lost his surreal touch but still made for good melodrama. The Return is just glorious. Some of the most heart-pounding moments on film.
Yeah I feel like the non Lynch episodes don’t get as much credit as they probably should

@@GarlicOrangeFilms I can remember watching it on tv. It was on ABC, network television, in 1990. Primetime. I was astonished they let it on tv. I remember articles at the time saying the only way it was allowed on tv at all is because it was David Lynch, and the show was red-hot popular.

There are numerous commentaries trying to decipher the meaning of the "Twin Peaks" world. For my money the best is a TH-camr named "TwinPerfect." His videos are long, but mesmerizing. They are authoritative, thoroughly researched, creative and have the ring of truth. As a bonus, he is also highly entertaining.

I really disliked TwinPerfect's "This is the only correct reading of the show and it's meaning". The nerve to say that their view is the definitive answer annoyed me. For me Twin Peaks is a show which is more about soaking in the atmosphere and mystery and I wouldn't even suggest people to try to resolve all of the mysteries and meaning by watching explanations from other people. I think the fun of the show's mysteries lies in watching the show and figuring it out at the same time. By repeat viewings more things might click and it will be rewarding to watch, but there will always be something bugging your brain.
Twin Peaks is in my opinion one of the best and most everlasting mysteries ever and it's so much fun to talk about with a friend. I don't think there will ever be a definitive answer to all of it and I for one wouldn't even want it. Getting too definite answers in season 2 almost killed the show, but the finale of season 2 brought it all back alive.
For me the best thing about Twin Peaks is that you can also just enjoy the ride and let your mind wander and not care about solving anything. The unresolved mysteries are there to lure you in and keep your subconscious occupied as you get to watch the town's colorful characters interract, listen to the magical music, laugh and cry, be shocked and in awe. For me it's the best show ever. And may its mystery live on.

@@jwoodard29 I remember being really entertained by his long explained videos, but I also remember being annoyed by the aspect of him thinking he has the "correct answers". I did see them a long time ago and time could have played tricks on my mind, so I could be totally misremembering what he said about his views in them. He's really well researched and his Lynch voice was hilarious. I think they are worth seeing as a fan, if you want to see what interpretations others have conjured up. But I wouldn't see him as having authority of any kind on the matter.

It's a real tight race between Twin Peaks and Mr. Robot. Mr. Robot is less uneven, but Twin Peaks season three is a tour-de-force.

Oh good, you didn't forget Mark Frost (not a jeer at you, it's just a lot of people forget about him or downright downplay his involvement. He's the dude of the lore)
It's also worth noting that there are plenty of episodes not directed by Lynch in the first two seasons (only six episodes were directed by him)and his involvement after the first three episodes in the first season was very much reduced because he went to do his movie Wild At Heart. The first season was much more Mark Frost (with writers Harley Peyton and Robert Engels along the way. Engels would later co-write Fire Walk With Me with Lynch) Lynch was much more involved in season 2 until the reveal and then for the season finale.
Yeah there were a lot of people involved especially during the first 2 seasons. Interesting to know it’s because Lynch was working on Wild At Heart I didn’t realise that.
@@GarlicOrangeFilms Yep, he was doing the movie during season 1. By season 2 the movie was done already. There was this myth around that he did Wild At Heart after the killer reveal and that's why he left after that episode but it has been proven as false by Frost and many others.
Personally not a big fan of breaking bad in hindsight. It doesn't have rewatchability for me. More I tried to rewatch it, the more lazy writing and annoying tropes I notice. Maybe that's just me but they've bugged me more and more over time.. But for me twin peaks can be watched over and over. Particularly fire walk with me, and the return. They get better every time I watch them. Binged them during covid for the first time I've been increasingly obsessed ever since. Fire walk with me, baffled me the first time i saw it, but much like the shining, i finished and remained intrigued in spite of my confusion.. and rewatching is so rewarding..
And then 'The Return' is also the best thing I've ever seen I think. It's a show made with so much love, and risk-taking isn't in david lynch's dictionary, he can't help but take risks. Doing things differently is all he knows, and I love him for it.
One additional tip on rewatching, particularly for fire walk with me and the return: use headphones. The sound design is so, so important to the story. It's hard to explain why but you'll get it once you do it.
I really like breaking bad but better call Saul is much better in my opinion, probably the only thing I’ve ever seen which I liked more than The Return I think but it’s like comparing apples and oranges
@@GarlicOrangeFilms maybe I'll give better call Saul a try one day. I heard good things. But I dunno maybe breaking bad just wasn't for me. Some of the writing gets very cartoonish. Walter white felt more like a comic book villain than anything real by the finale. It's tough for me to look past some of those elements.
For example, when the writers are having to tell you how clever a character is, rather than just showing him do something clever, and sometimes even having him do quite dumb things, that's an example of something that bugs me about that kind of writing. You see it comic book movies a lot. Michael corleone in godfather 1 and 2 I think was a perfect example of how a character can 'break bad'. They never make him into a super genius where every other character has to comment on how scary and brilliant he is. Instead they just show him being scary and brilliant, if that makes sense.
Having said that I will concede I generally thought the show was great at the first time of watching, other than the finale. It was the finale and on rewatch where these types of issues rly started to bother me.

If you love Twin Peaks, you should definitely give the show "The Leftovers" a try. It's heavily inspired by Twin Peaks while still managing to be its own thing. It's also really good. Season 1 is a little slow, but it picks up a lot towards the end. I'd say that season 2 and season 3 of "The Leftovers" are some of the greatest seasons of TV that I've ever watched. It's got a great cast and great characters and a great story. It's less comedic than Twin Peaks was, but it's still worth a watch. It definitley scratches that Twin Peaks itch. I highly recommend it!

_FWWM_ and Season 3 didn’t have the weird primetime soap opera meta parody aspect, and I think they suffered because of it… but even then, I don’t think I actually know what the show was about, but I love it anyway.

@@GarlicOrangeFilms - I thought the soap opera aspect had a grounding effect, making it more… accessible? the weird Lynchianisms were still there for those who appreciated them, but it was also palatable for the general audience.

@@chrisjfox8715 - but it’s more than just what audiences are familiar with… I guess I don’t know the right word for it. something like: by making it weird in a familiar way, it’s less weird in all the other ways. it’s weird in an inviting, warm and fuzzy kind of way.
also, the soap opera-ness of it all was just how the _Twin Peaks_ universe was established to be… until it wasn’t. it just felt like a different place… bizarro Twin Peaks 🤷🏻♂️
@@Sam_T2000 that's essentially my point... Soap Operas were the zeitgeist of the late 80s hence grounding it in that style is the very thing that made it digestible for people back then. Grounding in that same narrative aesthetic today likely wouldn't have worked as well.

Did anyone else dislike Twin Peaks: The Return as much as me? A lot of hate is brought towards people who dislike "The Return" but I find that unfair. I could go into detail about why I dislike The Return so much and why it's a narrative mess, but that would take so much time. I love David Lynch's work but he needed someone to give him constraints as well as Mark Frost.
I'm willing to listen to your explanation! Personally I can see why The Return can be such a hard pill to swallow, but I think it's kind of a unique entity that summarizes a lot of Lynch's career. If there's one thing to be taken from Inland Empire it's that he makes what he wants to make without compromising most of the time

Literally any other Lynch is better 2) David's failure is that he accuses the authors of wrong theories in creating them not realizing that he could instead align with more common sense, archetypal symbols from the entire history to not cause others to create misinterpretations (cause people will try to interpret such works cause they require thought work by definition)
