Wow, Weycroft Macford jars... looking to buy some for our new micro dairy. I milked with these back in the 1980s in a herringbone. Cracking video. Great education for the public. Hard work and little money but I can see and hear how much you love it. The whole set up is a credit to you.
Noticed them old kick bars hanging up their bud, personally thorght their no good a found just standing with the heffer is just as good a option, am trying to get bk into farming too so yeah, fantastic video fella 👌🏻
One thing I really enjoy is Sittin down every night and going on to TH-cam and this is the channel I always go to first 🐄! The amount of effort being put in to making these videos is unreal !! And I say it's a lot of extra work ! And fair play to you for doing it !! Keep up with the videos there top class.
Interesting to see how you milk your cows! That setup is quite different from anything I've ever seen. But the thing that is the most different are the routines sorrounding milking. We are taught to prep each cow by massaging the udder with a warm moist rag to stimulate the release of milk (simulating the calf working the udder to trigger the release reflexes, one rag per cow in order to not spread diseases of course) and to clean the teats. Between first udder contact and starting milking one minute should pass, so that the milk has been released from the upper parts of the udder. We then pre-milk each cow (just a few pulls on each teat) into a container where we can observe the milk for signs of irregularities like lumps and discoloration. After milking we of course apply iodine like you do, but I prefer a spray bottle rather than dipping. It doesn't dribble so much, it's more hygienic and it doesn't matter if the teats are shaped a bit differently, like it can do with those dipping cups. That's how it's generally done here, unless you have a milk robot setup.
because they're cows on grass, usually very clean teats. if they're in the shed however its wise to wipe them due to being dirtier and an easier transmission of mastitis causing things.
A bit funny how they know what to do automatically, like driving thru an automatic car wash. A well trained milk giver seems to know all the trix by now - Wait to be "served" at the door, find a dining stall, climb into position, eat while being milked, exit at the rear. All without a fuss or mooo of protest. A little slippery, so once in a while you see a hooves scooting around for traction, which is a good thing. Don't need a several hundred pound Bessy falling on you or getting hurt. No wonder you were smiling the whole time. It's like showing off well trained stunt dogs. LOL
I see that you have at least one person who dislikes this video. I wonder what their reason was, I have a good idea but I will keep it to myself because if I say what I think it will probably cause a storm. Excellent video as far as I am concerned.
R MacK there are always people who dislike my videos even when its something simple like the kids playing with their farm toys.I wouldn't worry about it
That is the coolest set up! Just knocks me out. How do you get a fresh heifer to stand still on that platform!!! God bless it. Would not have to kneel all day long.
Great vid , first time i see cows been milked , i always dreamed working in a farm as voulentry as i love animals so much and it would be a great experiance to have , you can tell your cows are well looked after, keep up the good work xx
you should definitely give it a go, I love helping my parents milk whenever I get the chance, I'm also on charge of feeding the calves every night. it's amazing!
not too bad. Mind you your cows know to walk in and where to walk, giving you no hassle. Our cowshed is built with an angle from the yard to the herringbone that the cows just won't trust and it drives us insane
gee the cows have good neat udders on them are very fat nice coats how many are you milking atm? it is pretty rare now to find a walk through dairy here now in australia how does your back feel after milkings sore i bet. we have a 41 aside double up herrinbone milking 400. we have just come through a rough patch of mastitis due to the muddy and cold conditions we are double dipping them before and after they get milked to prevent mastitis. how do you go with it over there? down side is that the milk price is now dropping to an altime low so not to great with the money side of things here atm but the weather is just starting to change now coming into spring and calving is nearly over wooo! love ya vids rich good job :)
jerseyproductions this parlour is pretty rare here too, most people have herringbones and there are a lot of robot parlours going in.we had a similar mastitis problem a couple of years back when we had a really wet summer, it was a nightmare to be honest. We also have a very low milk price and last night i went on a protest demo to a supermarket distribution centre about it
Hi Richard, do the cows go so readily in the parlour because you feed cake? Ours don't like going into the parlour very much and I thought if we fed cake they would go in better
I wish you got better prices for your milk because that's a lot of work! Plus you have the expense of taking care of the cows and keeping them healthy.
Morning Richard! Love the vids . Keep up the great work. 2 questions.... Did you do any filming when you closed up your silage clamp? I noticed that some of your cows have colored bands around their tails... What are they for and are the different colors used to differentiate them?
BigTeddyBear1957 I think I have a video on here of us doing it a few years back. The coloured bands remind us different things about the cow. Yellow = dry etc
is this a common layout for a milking parlour in england because in Ireland the only ones I've seen are the parlours with a trench in the middle and the cows would line up on each side. this seems like alot more work chaining each cow and bending down to put the clusters on each cow
derryclifford97 no this is a very old fashioned milking parlour. Not many like this about now.The sort you are talking about is called a Herringbone and is pretty much the standard design
I echo all the comments bellow, lovely quiet cows, do you have a radio on normally? When I was milking we always used a thin pre milking dip followed by a wipe then a after milking dip. We did this all year but I often wondered if the pree dip was strictly needed in the summer when the teats were clean. Interesting to see the pree dip omitted.
Paul F yes i normally have Radio 2 on. I've never pre dipped but normally have to clean off all the teats with paper towel. As its been so dry here the teats have been pretty clean so i haven't done it all the time
thefunkyfarmer cool.. thanks for reply.... I'm going back to around 1980.. guess things and technology moved on a bit... All I remember is the name Alfa Laval...
mark oconnor there is a thing called a kick bar which we put on them to stop that. They do sometimes go the wrong way, its not a problem, they come back
Any tips on kicky cows? I’ve been milking for 15 years and there’s a cow I’ve been milking for about 3 months and she’s the worst kicker I’ve ever dealt with. We’ve tried tying her head, kickers, double kickers, rope around her just in front of her udder, the other milker will tail jack her with the kickers on and she still kicks it off 2 or 3 times. Suggestions by anyone would help a lot, thanks!
You need to buy a kick bar. It slips over the cows back and under the leg while the cow is being milked and stops the cow kicking. It doesn't hurt the cow, just restricts it's kicking ability while it's being milked
patrick mc cabe its not just the cost of the machine, our whole set up would have to change to accommodate it. And right now with the low milk price theres no money about
It's not just the equipment cost, it's all the adaptations that would be needed to buildings, electrics, pipe work etc. this would be a very significant outlay.
Not in an abreast parlour you don't. In a swing over parlour like ours you do from the behind but in a parlour like this you'll get kicked if you did that .

TheodorEriksson yes your doing the right thing with all of that.Im just cutting corners the way i'm doing it in the video
Why do you not clean their tets before you milk,This would never fly around my farm.Lisa in East Central Ohio, usa
Because some cows stay really clean and on the way to the bulk tank it will filter out anything bad
because they're cows on grass, usually very clean teats. if they're in the shed however its wise to wipe them due to being dirtier and an easier transmission of mastitis causing things.

question with your size herd would there be any need to upgrade the parlour and if you would what parlour would u upgrade to
+machimaish the only reason to upgrade would be to get something more modern like a herringbone. But you're right, hardly worth it for us
How come you don't clean the utters before putting the clusters on?
David Wilson only because its been really dry so they have been coming in very clean

Sean McKenna only 20 today now
I can't say I've ever seen anybody milk cows without stripping each quarter first and than cleaning before milking. is your sematic cell count high?
about 220. Yep your right, should have done that
here is new zealand we milk 2500 cows it would take us forever to milk if we stripped every cow. our cell count is 90
We are milking 400 in Wiltshire with no wiping and no stripping and the cell counts is below 250.
His cows are spotless look at the teat ends. Would be ideal, but not all guys do it!
Excelente job

Martyn you are right, obviously Robert185b has not milked cows!
We switched to a pre dip and wiping cows before milking. Wipe off each teat 5 times making sure cows are fully stimulated. This has dropped our somatic cell count from 225000-250000 down to 80000 to 110000. last year we averaged 106000.
