We are ashamed to say that we are not too familiar with John Lennon nor The Beatles. However, the song, "Imagine" has lived within us since we were in the womb, and we just needed a reminder of what it sounded like. As per usual, Pentatonix created magic with this one... what's next?

Mitch and Scott share LGBTQ+, Scott and Avi share Man, Avi and Kevin share American, Kevin and Kirstie share Christian.They also are individuals - Avi is Jewish, Kevin is Black, Kirstie is Latina. Regardless, we are all human. The ending, before Kevin's verse, is called their "Wall of Sound."

This is absolutely an anti-war anthem; it is a cry for humanity. How do we avoid war if we don't acknowledge one another as fellow human beings, each with wonderful and unique attributes as well as commonalities? That is the first step to peace.

The first card was Mitch as LGBTQ, he then passed that card to Scott who is also LGBTQ, and also Man, he passed the common identity of Man to Avi, who also identifies as Jewish and American, who passes American to Kevin, who also identifies as Black and Christian, he then passes Christian to Kirsti who idenfies as Christian, Latino, and a Woman.

Kevin is often overlooked as a vocalist, because of his usual role in the group, but he is a talented musician, and a phenomenal vocalist in addition to being a percussive phenom. He is a powerhouse, and his solo projects are nothing to sleep on. His version of "Down" definitely needs you to watch it. You will be blown away. Bring extra socks!! The ones you wear will be knocked off! Lol

Look up Kevin’s video where at around 16 Kevin is already an accomplished musician. Watch Kevin’s Cello work. He is not over hyped. Each one of this group is terrific.
what's amazing about Kevin is that he started learning to sing AFTER joining Pentatonix. He didn't think of himself as a singer but because of the other members, he decided to take lessons and grow his ability to sing. The man can learn to do anything but that's something I really respect is that he had the courage/confidence to learn how to sing and sing with 4 VERY accomplished singers.
I've always thought that PTX would *never* have made it without Kevin, yet somehow he seems to get less credit or attention.
The words showing on the card while it was passed is what they have in common and share, the words they flipped and showed without passing are identities they have that they don’t share. I believe this was supposed to show how they have similarities, but are still very different from each other and despite their differences they’re all human and can come together harmoniously…..like we all should
They were showing their diversity in their small group -- so different, so unique, and living as one. Imagine that.

fun fact: I'm sure someone has mentioned it before, but Pentatonix's name is based off the musical term "pentatonic scale" which is a scale with 5 notes per octave. love your reactions, looking forward to more!
Music is a memory 'retrieval' cue. It can even reach through dementia, it has such immense holographic properties of affecting many different types of memory storage capabilities. From personal experience, emotions, physical location, etc that connect to when and how the piece was responded to. I saw wonderful use of it by a master musician I met, Tony Piazza, who applied it to aid mental institution patients.

It's not nice to break reactors who are not truly ready for that. But it is highly recommended. If you can handle watching the original, which sucks, the original singer had to use a computer to be to get the sound, Mitch shows you how it is done, vocally. So the PTX version is the upgrade.
Always here for "Gold." There's a lot to watch for, though, and a number of reactors aren't up to the task. Would love to throw down the gauntlet for these guys!

Pentatonix is just completely out of this world! I highly HIGHLY suggest you react to their cover of "The Prayer," because if you think you are impressed now, just wait until you hear that cover. (You'd also get to hear a lot of Mitch which I think ya'll would appreciate.) Their live performance of this is amazing as well! Since your on this Pentatonix journey I think you need to check out Scott and Mitch's duo subunit group they have together called superfruit.. they did a cover of Katy Perrys song Rise it's so amazing! The cover also features Brian Justin crumb, Mario Jose and Mary Lambert who are all amazing vocalists

The way you ACCURATELY got everything about this video, even how the Wall of Sound was them each riffing individually and then at the end coming back together...I can't hit thumbs up enough times. Someone else suggested The Prayer and I cannot second that recommendation enough. I'm also super partial to New Rules x Are You That Somebody.
THIS. Nobody else (reactor or commenter) I saw seems to talk about this. That part always gets me so much. It's about the beauty born from being together. But at the same time every one of them retains their individuality and you can distinguish each contribution.
At the beginning it sounds almost painful to me, as if they were trying to make themselves heard separately and too each other. But then they merge in a beautiful wall of sound.
I feel like so many people miss this part, it's great to see it discussed.

It's those long parts where every second is continuously covered in a smooth stream of harmonies.
Usually there are "gaps" in sound (they only sing the bass, or there is a high-pitched solo, or there are pauses). Then they all harmonize together you get hit by a "solid wall" of sound (all sounds, no gaps, no pauses xD)

Recommend their cover of The Prayer. To me, this is an amazing upgrade from the Dion /Bocelli version. I believe this might be their best work. If you don’t feel this version, then you’re not human.

I hate the original. But it's one of my all time favorite songs from PTX! 💖
If a member showed a sign, it was a quality they themself possessed. If they passed a sign on to another person, it was a quality they shared.
So each card represents themself and the person next them that they pass the card to. The next person holds the sign for a few seconds also identifying with it and then flips to a new identifier and then passes it on and so on down the line showing that they all have things in common but are also different from each other.

Guys you REALLY have to react to their cover for "the sound of silence". The emotions there are unbelievable! They truly did justice for the "Imagine" right here, but also for "the sound of silence"!❤
Mitch started with their identity and passed it to Scott who also identifies with that word. Then he flips the card to reveal another word and passes it to Avi, and so on. So the word passed to them is one that identify as/that they are. I hope I explained that well.
Also I 100% recommend Aha! Singapore, The Star Vista. I could watch it all day and never get sick of it. Just remember Kevin is putting his cello Beyoncé away when the song starts, so he does join in, you just never see him.

So agree! For me, that wall of sound has always been a metaphor for a main theme in the song. It's the distinctly unique PTX voices coming together to create those intricate and beautiful harmonies. Similarly, it's our differences that give us strength when we unite as a human family. Inspired!
Exactly! I always adore how thoughtfully that part was arranged. Not only do they come together, but even when they are all doing very separate parts, they still make beautiful music. Differences is not bad and when done together it is magical!
This brings tears to my eyes every time. Five people, different in so many ways, coming together to make something so beautiful and meaningful. Just imagine what we, as a people, could do - could create - could accomplish - if only we celebrated our differences instead of hating each other because of them.

Beatles music will live forever. your children and your children's children will always know who the Beatles were. Pentatonix did an amazing job with this song.
I appreciate how thoughtful you two are. You pointed out a couple of things about the song and the PTX video that I hadn't thought of before. BTW, this is one of the PTX videos where the visuals can detract from full appreciation of the music at first hearing so that may be why you didn't feel the chills until the second hearing. Those chills happen to people who have an emotional response to music when something in the music surprises them. That triggers a physical response similar to what your caveman ancestors felt when suddenly hearing a possibly dangerous animal coming through the forest.
Everyone has their own unique identities, but we all have identities that we share with others, but we ALL share that we are HUMAN.
The harmony is what gives me goosebumps. Avi's voice is so beautiful. And Mitch... he is a unicorn. :) one of a kind. I wonder if it's possible for the entire world of humans sang in unison one long beautiful note! Blended as one. Man, woman and child.

Also notice that on the line that said "And the world will live as one" they all sang on the same key... as one!
I am so glad you caught the meaning that they were putting out there. No matter what label the world wants to put on us and how we all have our own voice that needs to be heard, we are at the end of the day, only human and need to be treated as equally important. They used their talents to beautifully make a picture of how this is a reality that can and should be a part of our everyday life.

I feel like so many people gloss over it.
It's about the beauty born from working together.
But this beauty comes from a struggle. The struggle to be your individual self, while also letting the others shine and merge their way and their lives with yours.
At first their voices are separate, and it feels like they are tying to "one-up" each other. But then they merge in this beautiful wall of sound, which is amazing as a whole, but allows you to recognize each contributions.
This song is not about discarding "labels" (what makes you unique). It's about accepting other people's uniqueness and understand that our "common label" (human) allows us to understand each other and be as one in the end.

I love Pentatonix and I have been thinking about getting tickets for their performance Sep 29th at the Hollywood Bowl. I just recently listened to Imagine and I was so moved, I bought tickets right after I heard this song. Thank you Pentatonix and I cannot wait to see you in person in 14 days! Peace
To really experience Kevin's talent, watch his cover of Down. It is truly amazing. For something completely different, I recommend Hip Hop goes Broadway 1 and 2 (or something like that) by Superfruit. Superfruit is the duo of Scott and Mitch. There is nothing to research, and won't be any deep meaningful conversation after, it's just plain funny. As far as Pentatonix, I suggest The Wizard of Ahhhs, with Todric Hall. Watching the movie beforehand as a refresher wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for another great reaction! I loved hearing John Lennon live. My take on the group passing the cards is not just each individual sharing their personal identities, but also highlighting those parts of themselves that they share with one another- how they are connected one to another and therefore, one to the whole, ending in the ultimate connection between us all.
I really believe down in my soul that John Lennon was watching them record their version from heaven, and saying they understand what he was saying!! A beautiful song from the mind of a musical genuis!!!
I hope you gents will consider doing The Prayer, Amazing Grace, or The Sound of Silence next. All are amazing songs that I'm sure you guys will enjoy, but you also will get to see Matt (who replaced Avi in late 2017). :)

Freddie was very ill whilst making this song, he only had 3 takes (that’s what I have heard) to do this entire song, he was doing it, but he got really tired and he said he will be back to finish the song. He never came back... he had passed away November 24th 1991. At the time they only had about half of the song finished by the time he died so that is why they put the guitar solo and that’s why Brian had to finish the rest of the song. His last vocal word was “love”. He never got to finish this song... Only this man could sing like that whilst dying from a horrible disease. What a legend.

I love this one. I like your point that Kevin singing showed his multifaceted musical skills, proving we can have multiple identities in that way, too. Kevin pretty much sings whenever there is no beatboxing going on, (and when the harmony is in five parts it takes things to another level). There have actually been the occasional times that the others take up the beat so Kevin can sing, but none of them beatbox like Kevin, lol. My favorite part of the diverse identities represented by the group, was the demonstration that they also each shared an identity with their neighbor. Mitch passed Scott LGBTQ+ because they share that identity, then Scott shared "Man" with Avi, Avi shared "American" with Kevin, and Kevin shared "Christian" with Kirstie. I have been a Pentatonix fan from the beginning watching them on The Sing Off. Even after hundreds of listens I still get chills listening to their music but this song makes me legitimately sob.

Fantastic reaction, as always! Thank you guys! From Wikipedia: The term sniglet was conceived by comedian Rich Hall during his tenure on the 1980s HBO comedy series Not Necessarily the News. Each monthly episode featured a regular segment on sniglets, which Hall described as "any word that doesn't appear in the dictionary, but should". One example is Aquadextrous: possessing the ability to turn the bathtub faucet with the toes. These were (and still are) so funny. You guys can make up a sniglet for songs you forget the melody to but live inside you. Or folks might suggest them in the comments :)
