  • I KNEW you guys were setting me up for this one lol. All I have to say is thank you VERY much for suggesting this video of PTX to me. As you can probably tell, I had a blast listening to and reacting to it. In this video, I'm taking a look at Pentatonix and their cover of Kiara's Gold which, in and of itself, is a really fun song. I was really excited to hear the PTX version and even more so from the comments I got from you all on it. Needless to say, it didn't disappoint! I hope you guys enjoy the reaction as much as I enjoyed making it. Enjoy!
For those of you that don't know, this video will be covering not just a reaction to what I'm watching but I'll be talking about the things that I really enjoy about what the featured artist is doing. This can range from how they have composed their music from player to player if it's a band, or the drummer himself; and what I think they're doing really well technically as well as musically! I'll also do my best to convey and educate on the things that pop out to me so that we can all appreciate the artist and what they are doing! Of course, there's only so much that can be covered in a short TH-cam video so there are bound to be things that I've missed so bear with me! And now, time for the mandatory disclaimer!
    NOTE:
This is going to be a reaction and analysis of the song meaning that I will be pausing the song a lot to give my thoughts, reactions and analysis so if you are here to just listen to the song with no meaningful feedback, this is not the video for you. Stay happy and healthy!
Thank you so much for stopping by and watching this video, I hope that you enjoy it!

YESSS. There aren't enough reactions to Gold, it's a freaking masterpiece for all the reasons you mentioned. I'd love for you to check out their cover of Royals for many reasons, but primarily because they start the song without Avi and when Avi comes in you can just get a full sense of what he brings to the group, you know? That bass line is just integral! As someone who is always begging people to do Gold *after* having heard the original, thank you so, so much for catching on to that aspect! Thanks for this!!!

This one IS an earworm. Mitch's voice continues singing in my head all day. ( Sometimes, when no one can hear, I sing along.) Avi and Kevin shared an apartment for several years so imagine what the vacuuming-the-livingroom beats were. They also wrote several songs together. Try "Run to Me". Kirsten, Scott, and Mitch can sound like one voice---then split to do harmony. What a bunch of amazing talent.

      It's actually "Run To You".

Describing the difference between Mitch's rendition of Gold versus Kiara was perfect. He's been described as achieving vocal acrobatics that are rather difficult for most artists. Gold showcases Mitch but the others are so tight in this.

I appreciate what you said about bass singers, and how they don't get the credit they're more than due. Avi's precision in singing overall comes both naturally and as a result of having been an opera and classical vocals major in college (he was actually offered a position with the Los Angeles Opera as a basso profundo when he was recruited to join PTX in 2011.) You can hear him in "Hallelujah", for example, weaving in and out deftly; dancing vocally in madrigal-style in "Carol of the Bells"; dropping 2 octaves in some songs. For a taste of how his voice has matured and evolved since leaving PTX, check out this solo version of his original song (written with Grammy-winner Joy Williams) "Al Is Well", filmed in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands a few months ago during his European tour. The acoustics make his resonance just that much more stunning. th-cam.com/video/sNjbAAjF4Tg/w-d-xo.html

Kiaara does everything electronically in this song - she can't sing it live. Mitch does it all with his voice. How does he do that sliding between chest and head voice. He is a phenomenon - a-once-in-a-generation talent. Vocally this whole arrangement is incredible.

I get tired of reactors just kind of waving their hand and saying Scott is you know, Scott. Meanwhile Mitch, Avi and Kevin are pure genius. And they are fantastic. I agree. Sorry, I'm in very low spirits this evening and Scott's soulful voice and those beautiful runs he's mastered like breathing, is like comfort food for the ear for me and he just gets glossed over too often during reactions and I couldn't bite my tongue any longer. Before people come after me with torches and pitchforks, yes, this is definitely a brilliant spotlight performance by Mitch who I adore.

This, and their version of Cheerleader, are their two big underrated songs involving very complex layered singing of different parts.

I just found your channel today and watched your PTX reactions. I really like your analysis, that you mix technical information and disection in with enthusing about how good they are. I don't mind that you pause it, if fact I love to hear people who know their stuff talk about technical bits and pieces as they come up, I just ask that if you pause it you then back it up 10 seconds. Idk about others, but I also like it when a reactor rewinds to a specific point t their talking about so I can hear it more isolated from the rest.
I saw your vid about how busy you'e been with your studies & work. Don't overstretch yourself, Josh. Honestly, I understand wanting to get done with your degree as quick as possible, but piling on too much work can mean that interferes with your general enjoyment of life & hobbies etc.
I'm probably in the minority, but I went to uni for fun; I was 26 and I found a subject (Human Physiology/Biology) I really enjoyed and wanted to know more about (I say minority because most people go for to open career paths & opportunities). As hard a time as I had due to my health problems (I have a couple chronic illnesses & during my 2nd year had to have half my thyroid removed) most of my degree was fun for me; I say most because I wasn't prepared for the chemistry & maths parts lol - I remember a poster in the lab said "I went into Biology because I hate maths" and at first it was confusing...after a few weeks it was like " ooh, _now_ it makes sense" and then it became a funny meme (although memes hadn't been invented yet lol) complete with that slightly crazed kind of laughter. Anyway, it was only the last 6 months, when the work load increased massively with dissertations and the like, is when I really started to struggle and suffer. Unfortunately, I felt guilty taking any time away from studying. I didn't enjoy that last few months, and I wish I could have gone part time (even if it did mean an extra semester or 2), but unfortunately, if I had been part-time I wouldn't have been eligible for financial assistance or student accommodation so I couldn't have afforded it. The result was that my physical health was completely wrecked after, my joint issues flared so badly I permanently needed a walking stick just to move round the house; I had to move back with my parents, at 30 years old... they were great, but it still sucked.
So, I guess I'm just saying, I understand wanting to be over with college, but it's much more enjoyable & less stressful if you don't have to rush through it to the detriment of all the fun stuff in your life. I've gathered that college in the US works slightly different to most University degrees in the UK etc; from what I know it seems easier to be flexible with your course load each semester? Anyway, regardless of where or what you're studying, down time, hobbies, taking breaks are all really important because they restore your energy and motivation for working/studying. How much do you have left of your degree?
Anywho, new sub here. I nope you're able to find time to keep making vids while balancing work and college, because I really enjoyed your reactions & style.
Would love it if you checked out one of their songs with the cello, maybe Radioactive? Also, maybe one of their originals, such as Run To You, Love Again, or Sing (three very different songs, repectively: five part harmony; EDM-ish with hints of cyberpunk styling; and a fun, bouncy bop)
Have you checked out Superfruit yet? It's the side duo that Scott & Mitch have together (well, I guess had because they haven't uploaded really in a few years). They do skits, chatting, silly games, and also have music (not a capella)... some fun medleys & covers, and some serious (including a whole album of their original music with music vids). If you want a little fun I recommend Hip Hop Goes Broadway 1 + 2, to start with (always wait until after the "subscribe" as they often have outtakes). Just a little warning: they're not quite as family friendly as PTX is (they bleep the worst cursey words but they don't always bleep b**** for example)

      Hi Hawkeye's!
Firstly, I would like to thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to write such an amazing response to me. Secondly, I'd like to thank you so much for taking an investment in me and offering such heartfelt advice. It is true that I have a hard time slowing down most of the time and it's nice to be reminded that sometimes we need to take a break! I actually don't have much time left to finish the degree, a little under a year if my calculations are correct so I think that's why I'm just excited to get it over and done with!
I admire you for everything that you went through in your college endeavor and admire you even more considering that you sought your career for fun while battling what seems like a nightmare of an illness. As a person that loves to learn, I find that amazing! I completely understand what you said about the math and chemistry as I studied engineering for a time. Although I very much enjoy math, it was the chemistry that did me in lol.
I also appreciate your constructive criticism. I will try to remember to rewind a bit in future videos. Sometimes, I get so wrapped up in trying to finish the video and not cause people to get upset over the length of it and trying to please everyone that I just rush through everything.
And finally, thank you for all of your suggestions! I really like that you took the time to break down all of them and explain each one. It really helps 'personify' the suggestions I suppose, and make them much more interesting!
Once more, thank your for your thoughtful response, I look forward to hearing more from you!
      -Josh

If you appreciate what they did with this cover, you'll likely also appreciate their mashup of New Rules by Dua Lipa and Are You That Somebody by Aaliyah. I'd also recommend listening to the originals before watching it because you'd never expect them to go together, the way they use New Rules is such a different feel than the original even though they keep the same melody. By far one of my favorites of theirs.

Can I suggest that you react to 4th Impact - 4 sisters from the Philippines. They auditioned for X Factor Uk 2015 and the video of that audition has more than 185 Million views. These ladies have amazing harmonies. They have many cover songs and a few original songs on you tube.

This off PTX subject, but have you reacted to Texas A&M Fighten’ Aggie band? High precision marching band. The formations are insane!

I love watching people geek out over Pentatonix. They are just... in a class all their own. I love it when people who have the background knowledge talk about the insanity that they do with their voices. Especially with Kevin and Avi. They are just Ridiculous (said in Shawn Stockman voice ) I've seen several people who actually play drums complain about how the heck can Kevin do what he does.

Sometimes people complain that they want to heaar Kirstin sing lead more often but her background parts are so difficult especially when she jumps notes.

Great reaction. If you really like A Cappella you should check out Home Free, their Beatboxer Adam Rupp is AMAZING,!! Here's a couple of suggestions for you to check out. Man of Constant Sorrow, When a Man Loves a Woman, or Listen to the Music (Doobie Brothers cover ) these are all cover songs. They do have originals. I really hope you check them out. Avi is awesome. Pentatonix is awesome

I actually couldn’t stand the original at all, but I absolutely love this “upgrade”.

One of my favorites from Pentatonix. Thanks for the reaction! If you like marching bands, can you please react to BTS' ON Kinetic Manifesto Film (Music Video). Music, singing and dancing - craziness. Hope you'll check it out and put English subtitles on, 'cause it is in Korean and English. Avi has and is still a favorite. I finally got to see him live this year - he's so, so good! Love his solo work!

I enjoy this cover. Dislike the original Kiara.
Fun fact. Avi Kaplan recently gave an interview to Breedlove (he's been doing alot of them for his new album "Floating On a Dream") not a flattering view of marching band but he has mentioned he has toes that can bend all the way back towards his ankles (see Fantasy Flashcards Avi Kaplan) so it makes sense " I started out playing the trumpet in middle school. In eighth grade, they told us we would have to switch to Marching Band. I was definitely
not going to do Marching Band. So, I joined choir and fell in love with singing and harmony. I started playing acoustic guitar about that same time -writing songs, making my own music, and playing for people at coffeeshops."
