Since I intend running semi permanent rakes, I've gone with the WHWW Hunt elite magnetics. There are 3 lengths so if you mix and match you can get quite close couplings. I've found extra close on the BR Mk1s, close on most stock and long on the rear of an Arnold BR85. Also as you showed they are strong enough that the loco will stall before they fail. I have found it best to trim some to get them seated in the pockets correctly. The Hornby ones are just too fiddly and have a mind of their own. They won't couple on a curve or even on straights if they aren't aligned perfectly, you still need to use the HoG on most uncoupling and they are prone to just uncoupling at will. Great informative video.
@@PeachyTT120 Yeah it shows all the options I think most people would consider in TT so its good to see one video with how they all work, I think its a very helpful video, considering we do these videos out of our own pocket Its lovely your willing to share your knowledge with everyone for free👍
I was hesitant about getting the dapol easi-fit after seeing adverse comment on RMweb. But will give them a try thanks to your video. So many thanks. Like you, I am intending to fit the Dapols to the ends of carriage rakes only (think I'll keep the Hornby tension locks as will have permanent layout). Also read on RMweb that the Tillig version of the tension lock is better than Hornby version & easily uncouples with magnetic screw driver. But not cheap!
The Hornby couplings are a poor copy of the Tillig originals. The Tillig ones work really well. Their packs of 50 are very good value - especially if you buy them from an EU supplier like Modelbahnshop-Lippe.
Hi Peachy watched your vids from the outset and always enjoyed the mix of tips, interviews and the team up with Greg. Come back to the hobby for the first time since my teens and 67 now - where did that go!. Originally bought some OO gauge locos and drawn to diesels but after watching you guys took the plunge, had a day out in Margate, and my better half bought me the Scotsman TXS trainset in the recent sale. Completely sold on HM DCC and determined to stick with it using a mini ipad and wondered how i would get on fitting decoders etc but a pair of magnifying glasses later all good. Definitely have not got the fingers for N gauge. Although the visual impact of OO is perhaps more impressive i think a long train in TT looks more appropriate on track so definitely a convert. The Hornby couplings i find can be dang fiddly and not that reliable so further to your vid bought some Hunt magnetic couplings put them on an HST with 4 carriages and happy days, so easy. Like your idea of the dapol kadee? style at each end to uncouple. I did speak to West Hill and they said they are working on a decoupler for the magnetic couplings. Anyway very happy to have reunited with the hobby as find it very therapeutic and as for TT its mostly your fault. Thanks again brgds Paul. - oh slight quandry bought an 08 shunter which i cant use - wait for the Hornby 6 pin or take the plunge with TMC doh!
Hi Peachy. I'm new to the hobby and have just purchased a new set from TMC but was considering the Dapol couplings shown in this video (I realise it's quite old now) but wondered 2 things: 1. Has anything changed in regards to magnetic couplings since recording and 2. Where to purchase the Dapol couplings (and where do the bar magnets come from)? You are fast becoming my go to source for TT120 and also any idea if there will be a re do of the Peachy 7 plank wagon???? :)
@@philsilva13 you can pre-order the Dapol couplings from TMC SKU code 2A-000-011 The magnets are 2A-000-006 West hill wagon works are still working on a solution for their system, but could be available soon. For uncoupling Hornby couplings I use a small piece of metal soldered to a short length of rail. The metal is 12x8mm and the handle is 8cm long with the last 1cm bent to around 45 degrees. I made a couple of these for my 00 layout but happily found they work just as well for my TT120 trains. Love Ted, handsome little fellow.
Hi Chris, were these the short version of the coupling. Very interested in using them and just want to make sure I order the right ones. Many thanks Malc

Two little tips- a very tiny dab of superglue on each end of the Easi-shunt coupling magnet keeps it attached. Also the nearer you can get the bottom of the dropper to the track magnet the better it works- and make sure the dropper is very slightly offset to the side, really just like Kadees in HO and Microtrains in N.
Big fan personally of the WHWW products, used them for ages, semi permanent rakes work well. For auto uncoupling, I currently use an adapted "end" coupling known as brian Kirby. Works well for auto uncoupling. The Kadee couplings, ive never been able to get the automatic uncoupling to work reliably, similar to the ez shunt stuff from dapol..
Yeah if I could think of a smart way of shunting & auto de-coupling with the WHWW units I would use them everywhere as they’re much more cost effective
@@IronHorseRailways I was thinking maybe glue some steel to the under side of the wagons, have an electro magnet activated under the lead wagon to anchor it in place then use DCC concepts power base to assist the loco separate. I’ve got an idea to test it.

The Dapol easy shunt sound like they are a TT version of the Kadee number 17 buckeye coupling; but not made out of metal like Kadee and Kadee's N scale Microtrain's coupling. Does anyone know if microtrain make a nem pocket compatible for the British N scale?

Good question Damian, I’ve bought the WHWW starter set that has the whole range and I’m mixing and matching to make sure I get stock as close as practicable before I order any more, but it’s a bit of a balancing act trying to get it just right.
