People ask me all the time, "Jungle Bob, what's the best tarantula for my kid? He wants to get a really cool pet, and I want to get him a tarantula because it's a wow type of an animal to own." And it's a tough question to answer sometimes, because there's a lot of choices. But if I have to choose, here's the three I'd go for most of the time. Number one is the Chilean rose hair tarantula. And my criteria, being a father as well as a pet store owner, is that I really don't want anybody to get bitten. You never know what's going to happen from a tarantula bite, because people who are allergic to bee stings can have a hard time with it, and wasp stings.
But tarantula venom isn't something that is deadly, so to speak, but if you are allergic to it you could go into anaphylactic shock if you are bitten by a tarantula and it doesn't do well in your system. So let's pick a species, therefore, for a beginner, that is reluctant to bite. Number one on my list, again, the rose hair tarantula. Number two, if you're looking for a desert species that is also very, very calm, would be the palomino blonde. This is an American tarantula found in the deserts of Texas and the Southwest, kind of plodding, kind of slow-moving, not the most exciting tarantula maybe, just like the rose hair. They don't do much, but they're not going to flee from you, and they're certainly not going to bite you for any special reason. They're very, very docile creatures to deal with.
So I think that's a good criteria for a beginner. In terms of keeping, ten-gallon tank, desert, a little more humid environment when it comes to the rose hair. And they eat very, very infrequently. A couple of crickets once a week or some kind of an insect item, and they're good to go. All tarantulas need fresh water at all times. But you don't want to put a bowl in like you do for your cat or your dog. You want to do a shallow dish, and we usually put a sponge or some type of moisture holding instrument that the tarantula more can suck on than he will drink. You don't want to give them a bowl. They can potentially drown in a bowl of water. So that's pretty straightforward and pretty simple. If you're looking to turn that up a notch, you want to go to the very, very beginner animal to the next step, phase two maybe, let's look at arboreal tarantula like the pink toe from Trinidad.
They are easily handled, easy to keep, small cage. Rather than a ten-gallon cage which is more vertical, you want one that's got some height because it's a tree-dwelling creature. The reason he's a secondary animal and a little more difficult to keep in these but still in the beginner class is because pink toes can be extremely quick. You can hold them, interface with them, but when he gets nervous, he darts, and he darts fast. So that makes him a little less of a beginner, but still in the beginner category for sure. The rose hair, the palomino blonde, or the pink toe would be my three readily available, inexpensive beginner tarantulas. Good luck. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

I’ve had 2 tarantulas that have drowned in their drinking dishes. Sometimes they can end up upside down in their dishes and can’t flip themselves over so they drown.

Do NOT handle your tarantula for soooo long! It isn't bad or anything, but they need privacy and do not really benefit from handling. They just want a dark place with hardly any interference.

I disagree. They're so low maintenance that only only need to feed once a week and mist every so often. As long as the animal is cared for, what does the reason it's gotten fkr matter?
That's like saying you shouldn't get a dog if you don't admire it and are intrigued by them. They are animals, why not have one if you want one as a cool pet

I'm a jumping spider lover. They are just so cool and seem curious of gentle humans. I've taught all my kids to be respectful and appreciative of them. I would love to someday have a tarantula as a pet.

I had 3 rosie's when i was a little girl and they never bit me, I dont remember handling them as much either, but this is true it is good for a beginner BUT i would never buy one for a 5 yr old.
You don't need a sponge, that just promotes mold. They're not going to drown in a shallow water dish. They drink with their mouth parts, and their book lungs are located far away from their mouth. Also rose hairs lobe in the desert, and scrublands of Chile. The water dish will keep all the humidity they need. They don't like the humidity too high.
Just a quick tip for all the people that want to get a tarantula only because it's a "cool pet"....just don't :)

You just love bugs then, befroe and after the perchase. I have 4 T's now, 4 scorpions and a Giant Centipede, Tailess Whip Scorpion and a Solifuge. And Things are going great, I can totally relate to you. But it is because we love bugs.

This video is embarrassingly inaccurate. 1) It is physiologically impossible to go into anaphylactic shock as a result of a tarantula bite (due to the structure of the peptides). There is also not a single documented death attributed to a tarantula bite. 2) Grammostola rosea (the Chilean rose tarantula) is an arid species and has the same care requirements as the Aphonopelma species he is recommending...do not keep them "a little more humid." 3) Tarantulas will not drown in a water dish. Sponges breed bacteria/mold; don't use them in a tarantula enclosure.

Bryan Grim Assuming you want to optimize the well being of your pet, then no, captive husbandry is not subjective. Tarantulas - particularly the New World terrestrials - can *survive* in sub-optimal environments, but will not *thrive.*
The best book on the subject is Michael Jacobi's "Tarantulas." I'd also encourage you to check out the American Tarantula Society forums and Facebook page.
Kyle Saunders Kyle is 100% correct on everything. It is quite obvious he knows what he is talking about.
To keep it simple, another good one is a Dachshund dog tarantula. It requires a leash, dry food, and to take him/her out 3 times a day. Finally, on Halloweens, let him/her rock out their Halloween costumes!

Chilean roses can be fine but they can also fast for long times and be temperamental. The best tarantula I would say is a chilean flame, my first tarantula is a chile flame and oh my, cutest little thing. Great temperment and pretty as well. They don't get that big either. Go have a look, really, I mean it!

They tend to become aggressive if they are handled too frequently. Try giving them a day to themselves after a day that you handle them, and they'll be okay.

I ended up getting a pink toe (our first T) for my daughter that she absolutely loves. We both held for the first time after about a week of allowing her to adjust to her new enclosure. She can definitely be quick when she wants to be but is a sweet and fun terantula to handle and watch.

Just an FYI, the tarantula keeping community has generally shifted away from keeping the Chilean rose hair (Grammarstola rosea) as a beginners tarantula. Lots of people find their specimens to be more temperamental and aggressive compared to other species. Brachypelma hamorii (formerly B. smithi) AKA Mexican red knee has become the new stereotypical beginner's tarantula. It's important to note that every specimen has a unique temperament. Any species can be aggressive, and some infamous species can have docile specimens. I don't necessarily recommend handling, but if you choose to handle your spider, always test their mood with a soft paint brush and watch their body language. Never handle your spider if it is skittish or in a threat pose.

The only problem is, no way I'm going to handle any insects to feed to them. I usually let spiders roam the house so that they can kill insects for me, so that I don't have to run into those insects in the first place!!

Well if you feed it crickets, you dont have to worry about biting and you can use tweezers or some kind of device to pick them up (sounds mean but you are killing them anyway so you know, ....not that mean,).

Not worried about biting, insects just give me massive creeps. I like mantises, but I certainly won't feed them to a spider. Most other insects are... yeeeccccchhh.

It's not a rational fear, can't help it. Something about the way they move, like I feel they're going to jump around and get under my clothes or whatever. That's why the bigger omnivores scare me because of the erratic movement. If I see a cockroach, for instance, I have to suppress the urge to scream like a little girl, and then run to get the insecticide - and I don't relax until I am 100% sure that it's dead. :/
Big arthropod carnivores though, and especially the slower and deliberate ones, don't scare me at all. I love spiders, mantises, crabs, etc. Scorpions are obviously scary, but for completely different reasons (around here, they will kill you).

no, just don't handle it roughly, all tarantulas CAN bite but usually don't. If you ever need to pick it up, use something to push it from behind onto your hand. if they flare their front legs up, just leave them alone.

Antilles Pink Toe start out blue with barring on their abdomen and eventually turn pink & purple as they molt out. Take lots of pictures! The change is amazing.

Luis Rosario actually he's not that expert. The way he grabbed the desert tarantula is a no no for an expert breeder. New world tarantulas has urticating hair that they will flick if they got startled and you know best way to startle a tarantula is by grabbing them like that. The sponge in drinking cup and about the heat pads he was recomending is actually bad for tarantulas. Tarantula doesn't need heat pad because it can cause them dehydration and if your comfortable with the temperature usually most tarantula is also comfortable with that temperature. All the tarantula breeders I know don't use heat pads. Tarantulas unlike mammals only breed if they are really healthy and well taken care off.

I have a TX Brown tarantula, super docile and easy to handle, although I don’t keep a sponge I keep a small little pitri dish type bowl for water
I can't stand small spiny spiders that jump but I love tarantulas, especially rose hairs, so calm, slow, and pretty.
Also the Mexican Red Kneed Tarantula! They are great pets for beginners too. They're reluctant when it comes to biting but will still do if necessary! Every animal will try and harm you if they feel threatened, so still need to be super careful when around them. I've wanted a Red Knee for ages but my mum hates spiders!
The first two Tarantulas there are among the most popular as pets. I've see a few of them up close behind glass and they are an impressive breed and among the most amazing and beautiful in terms of their colours.

Ok video but I would check out Jossers Jungle. This video isnt bad but it offers some iffy info. Like the sponge thing. Having a spinge for water means a higher risk of illness because sponges collect bacteria. Idk.

Grammastola Pulchripes (Choco golden knee) is also a great beginner spider, plus they get very large and are pretty docile. :)
