I'm from cape cod . Love to try fresh pike and trout. I grew up eating stripe bass and cod along with bay scallop and clam. The occasional lobster was good
No the guts are still in and remain untouched, if you are skilled with the knife removing the guts is a waste of time to get the filet's. If you let's say want to grill the whole fish like with trout or want to have nice chunks of salmon (where you cut the fish through the middle) you remove the guts first.
I use the second way now. Both ways worked well. No bones means kids and wife will eat fish. With bones, no fish. Pick the battle and accept some waste.
Yes. my man. two ways to do it. and if fillet enough fish you will get a fillet glove. it’s worth the protection. I got the Rapala one. I love my Rapala products. I have fished 62 years and love it. the Great outdoors. :-)
ok watching this obviously the 2nd way seems much more fillet meat is on the fillet but I am curious if and 8 know this would probably take a long time but for even maybe as much meat as possible, why not start filleting like normal I guess like the 1st way you showed but instead of removing that thick long piece with all the Bones why not get some pliers or tweezers pluck out the bones? maybe even something for the kids to do but end up completely boneless and tons more meat ?
+Pastor Peewee Have you ever tried to pluck bones from raw pike fillets? It is nearly impossible. Sure they pull out easily once cooked, but not when raw. It is a lot like trying to get the bone out of a turkey drumstick raw vs well cooked.
+BudderWarriors Good question, I have no experience with saltwater originating fish. I have filleted a lot of pike in the past though, I have never seen the bones come out easily with them? (PS. if my previous comment came across as sarcastic, it was not meant that way)
Well done, thanks. A little different from the way I do it but I am always looking for a better way to skin a cat. Yes some waste, but it is a difficult fish, and one (in my opinion) that should be kept.
Try placing your filet with the rib bones removed inside up. Begin at the front and perpendicular to the filet cut down almost thru filet until you feel your knife not cutting bones anymore. Do this about every quarter inch with your knife at bout a 60 degree angle through the "Y" bone area.. Fry your fish and you tell me where the "y" bones went.
thanks for the video, my lake back home used to be awesome brook trout, brown trout & small mouth bass lake but thegood ol' MNR through in dirty ol' slime gators because they lacked any knowledge of what other species were in there, now i use the second method on this video it's great knowing that i can kill & eat the dirty ol' fish that destroyed our lake!
The first method is the one I have been using. With a little bit of work you can get closer to the y-bones than he did with the knife and waste virtually no meat. There is one other method I have seen that seems to get good results, but I haven't managed to get it right yet. The second method this guy used was just horrifying. More efficient? No way. Faster, yes, but efficiency is more than just speed. That was a BUNCH of meat he left behind in that fish. Has anyone seen any other methods that are worth looking at? I'm always on the lookout for a better, more effective one.
i would just take the guts out and maybe the head and throw the rest of the fish on the grill. eat around the y bones. though im more of a scavenger so i hate wasting delicious meat:)
a true fisherman never waste alot of meat and u can feel where the bones is with a knife and use it to guide u and take the head too slip it in half and cook it on a open fire or boil em its good mmmmmmm fish cheeks
lol learn how to eat Pike! Fry the entire Fillet. When its cooked take your fork and pull off the bottom 2 inches. ALl the Y bones will be sticking out. Pull them out and then you have Boneless Pike..0% wasted meat.
yes. I am eating pike right now. I am fished pikes for all of my life and I still do. I am filleting about 200 pikes for my personal use every year. or much much more if I sell them. I am sorry but that method really is too slow and complicated and there still is too much waste.
I am sorry Sir! But this is just awfull how you work with the knife! So much waste and a terrible knife flow! The filet looks like sh.. also! Please dont show videos like that if you cant handle a knife
the second way is the true way to clean a northern. Good job my man!
Can't wait to give it a try. The damned Y bones have been my bane forever.
4:20 --- awesome technique! Can't wait to go pike fishing and try this second technique!
nice video, love the quality and the close ups.
cool technique too
Paul,
Thank you for making this video!
Hasn't convinced me on the glove, but the second method is awesome. It was my first time fileting a fish of any kind and it worked out perfectly.

Do you gut the pike first with these methods? I like the second one. We ate many pike as kids and we always dreaded the y-bones.

Thank you i think this method works the best i think in the next video you should clean a lake trout.

Did you gut the fish?

Do they taste good

+Pastor Peewee that might work. You should try that and post it on youtube. But the second method would Probably get more meat regardless
+Pastor Peewee Have you ever tried to pluck bones from raw pike fillets? It is nearly impossible. Sure they pull out easily once cooked, but not when raw. It is a lot like trying to get the bone out of a turkey drumstick raw vs well cooked.
+Crystal S how about a salmon I just plucked a few bones out of a raw croaker fillet with the skin on
+BudderWarriors Good question, I have no experience with saltwater originating fish. I have filleted a lot of pike in the past though, I have never seen the bones come out easily with them? (PS. if my previous comment came across as sarcastic, it was not meant that way)
+Crystal S what is the question
When someone tells me i waste to much meat cleaning pike i just point at the scrap bucket and say "help your self!'
What Kind of Knife is that?
Well done, thanks. A little different from the way I do it but I am always looking for a better way to skin a cat. Yes some waste, but it is a difficult fish, and one (in my opinion) that should be kept.
ur probably right great video BTW
So the first technique gets you 2 fillets... The 2nd one gets you more? More is better for me :3
finally! a solution!
Great video; we love pickerel but they usually aren't over 3 pounds down here. #pickerel #fillet
It's strange to see this because in the uk everyone releases everything they catch and pike are good
Great techniques .... would of liked for the camera person to focus more on the close ups of fish and not the far away sections ....thanks

there is videos.
The thumbnail for this video looks like Zoidberg
Wasted Arrow Need a thumbnail? Why not Zoidburg?
also we cannot transport the second way, must be 2 fillets with a skin tag
i live in quebec ..i catch alot of pike every year they taste good fried with salt damn ..
I don't keep fish much but when I do I prefer the leftovers as bait
thanks for the video, my lake back home used to be awesome brook trout, brown trout & small mouth bass lake but thegood ol' MNR through in dirty ol' slime gators because they lacked any knowledge of what other species were in there, now i use the second method on this video it's great knowing that i can kill & eat the dirty ol' fish that destroyed our lake!
Is. That a rapala super flex
Very poor Camara angles, but thanks for sharing
I have been tryimg to cstch a pike for a year now. No luck. I fish a coue times a week too.
Try a Mepps Lure either a mepps black fury or aglia. ive caught hundreds of pike on them
Nice thank you. I got a couple.
I think I have a couple vids on me fishing with a mepps. It doesn't teach much of anything but rather to show that the lures produces.
Use spinner baits in weed beds. If caught thousands using that.
Also they are one of the easiest fish to catch, maybe try another lake.
Nice
once you get these things de-boned, they are the best eating fish there is in my opinion
no more throwing northerns back

Finally we can eat it
Just saying but when u get the fillet with the y bones keep working on it ur wasting a bit of meet there practice makes perfect
that first fish he did looked like it was chewed on by a bear when he was done with it... what a joke if this is the best they have
Those are just babies paul come on release um ;)
The second method seems a bit wasteful
😘😍😻

2nd way was much better imo.
Look at a tutorial video from Finland where a real pro works. RISTO KOSONEN KALANKASITTELY.
man thnx s0 much
filleting is uzully s0 bonerific for me
i would just take the guts out and maybe the head and throw the rest of the fish on the grill. eat around the y bones. though im more of a scavenger so i hate wasting delicious meat:)
I'm getting hungry
have you ever eaten a pike before bud?

Pull the hyde! Don't move you knife when filleting! And don't waste you time with these tiny ones!
Hard job to fillet a pike and to leave it boneless.
Practice, practice, practice

The second technique is way to wasteful. May as well not even keep the fish

So much wasted meat... Keep the leftovers and boil up a fish broth.
From 5pd fish to 1pd fillet.. cook it take the bones out when you eat it simple no waste.

Bul shit 50%fish emisions
No we dont eat it cuz it tastes like shit, also that's a really small pike, shame to kill it.
you fn butchered pretty bad there buddy
and you're only using 75 % of the meat anyway
That seems like a lot of wasted meat on the first method...
Pike meat 's got too many small fishbones and is tasteless.
agree- too much waste !!!
What a waste of fish and the pike looks rotten
what a waste of fish. doesnt seem right to kill the fish just to throw half of it away
DUDE!!!!!! that looks terrible!!way too much waste!!!
What a wasteful way to clean pike. I can clean them in a faster manner and with less waste and no bones
Very wasteful,this guy is amature
you are wasting alot of meat!
Thank you i think this method works the best i think in the next video you should clean a lake trout.
ur probably right great video BTW
