Sound Test Memories # 1

  • When I've spent time with a game and grown to love its sound track, there's nothing I value more than being about to go to the options menu and find a sound test there.
    Now I listen to my favourite songs, and in some cases, sound effects as much as I like. This option has become somewhat of a rarity in the modern era of gaming, but I'll always treasure the times they were readily available.
    But there are times when sound tests offer more than just music, and these stick out in my memory the most. That's why today, I'm taking a look back on my memories with Sound Tests and the highs and lows they have brought me.
    As mentioned in the video, there's an extra, unlisted continuation of these video. If you can't click on the icon at the end, here's a link to it: • Sound Test Memories Extra

    It's very amusing to go into the sound test of Puyo Puyo and put the danger song on, which is a short looping medley that gets a higher pitch each time. In normal gameplay you won't hear it long enough that anything happens, but in the sound test the pitch ends up so high it becomes inaudible.

    10:22 - The japenese Texts reads "Infinite Fun from Sega Enterprises. - Majin" 'Majin' is a childhood nickname of Sonic CD's landscape Designer, Masato Nishimura.
    12:00 - The text above Sonic's head in this picture reads "You are cool" with the bottom text reading "By Sanchanzu". The picture was drawn by Masahiro Sanpei, landscape designer and animation visual director for Sonic CD.

    5:00 This Feature also happens in Miitopia where you have to Hear the Specific Songs In-Game before you can View them in the Sound Test. In Fact, I'm pretty sure ALL RPG's with Sound Tests have this Feature. :3

    Pointless trivia: did you know that the debug mode cheat in spanish countries (well, at least in Argentinian magazines) was called "mil caras" (a thousand faces)?
    Dunno why. Don't ask me why. I could transform in anything but faces (?)

    With the horrifying boss theme and the lack of some awesome themes from the Japanese version, I'd almost say that they shouldn't have bothered changing Sonic CD's soundtrack for the American release.
    Then again, we would've never gotten Sonic Boom, so....

    • @HyperSonic777
      @HyperSonic777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my opinion I think both soundtracks of Sonic CD are the best. Without either soundtrack existing the game just feels half empty with one soundtrack gone. Without the US soundtrack there wouldn't be awesome themes like Sonic Boom, Wacky Workbench Present and Good Future, Stardust Speedway's Futures, and some jingles.
      Without the Japanese soundtrack there wouldn't be awesome themes like Collision Chaos, Tidal Tempest, Quartz Quadrant, Wacky Workbench Present and Bad Future, Stardust Speedway, Metallic Madness, the Boss Themes, and some jingles.
      Songs like Wacky Workbench Present (US and JPN), Wacky Workbench Bad Future JPN, and Wacky Workbench Good Future US are my most favorite songs of all time. I've gotta say WW Bad Future JPN is my favorite Japanese track (and 2nd best song ever) and Good Future US is my most favorite song ever. I always get a daily dose of Sonic CD music. I listen to both soundtracks all day long (Mostly Wacky Workbench).

    • @obotprime339
      @obotprime339 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I like both soundtracks too. I just don't understand why they had to make the US Boss theme so scary.

    • @HyperSonic777
      @HyperSonic777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm one of the few who like the US Boss Theme just as much as the Japanese Boss Theme but the US Sound Test image with the song is so creepy especially in the Batman Sonic one.

    Aaaah Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic 2, i've always tought that song would come out when i got the seven emeralds... And the day i've got them all, the game told me : Nope!!! You'll never know how to hear that song ingame. Later Internet comes and the mystery was finally solved. Also Git there's absolutely no need to hold A button when selecting a stage to get Super Sonic.

    Some people speculate that the BGM35 from SoR3 is actually an early tune from Beyond Oasis, another Ancient game. The song in particular from Beyond Oasis is called Deep Hole, and both songs sound a _little_ bit similar but with a change in instruments and tempo. It's quite a stretch though, so let's just go with the idea that it's a funny version of the ending theme.

    It's a shame that sound tests aren't really a thing anymore. Being able to go into the options menu and listening to the songs that might await me in the game gave me a little bit of extra motivation to play through these games.
    EDIT: Holy shit, opening with Plok music. Creepy Crag, even. Best song of the game right there. You're the man, Git.

    Pulseman's sound test do spoiler with the sfx, you can hear all dialogue in game, basically you can hear the story in the right order by going to the menu, it also is material for your seizure inducing games series, on one specific level though, and he is op, he becomes invulnerable while dealing damage by button mashing (he can't dash or attack during the invulnerability, it isn't necessary though)

    The strangest part of that one Ristar sound test is that the credits song only shows up if you input a cheatcode you learn after beating the game (which incidentally also allows you to use the "Off-key" effect from the vulture boss on any song), but the FINAL BOSS theme is apparently fair game.

    I prefer the U.S. soundtrack of CD overall...though it does depend on the song. The U.S. title theme (Sonic Boom) is awesome, and I wish it would show up in a remixed form in a modern Sonic game (like...if there''s a Mania 2, it could be the title track...just putting that out there on the off chance that Tee Lopes somehow sees this comment)
