  • making slow and steady progress on our small garden trying to make the most of a small space that the family can enjoy during the summer. decided to make a batten wall with lights to improve the look of the corner area where we have our outdoor sofa.
    I started off painting the awful rough brick wall with black sandtex paint I did this so I wouldn't be able to see the bricks through the spacers in between the battens. this took a long time even with a long pile roller and a large paint brush
    once this was complete I collected 4.8m 2x1 battens from a local timber supplier. these were all cut to length and I attached 3 fence rails vertically to the wall.
    then applied the battens to the rails with 17mm spacing in between and then painted it all with cuprinol silver copse paint.
    fit 2x lights from Amazon and wired into a socket inside my kitchen.
    refit the sofa and an outdoor rug from the-rugs.com and now have a lovely corner area to sit on a summer evening

    Most amazing thing to me is that paint didn't end up all over the decking!

    Great job. Personally I would have sprayed the bricks, then painted the uprights. That way you don’t see any wood behind the slats. What a great idea. Thank you for sharing this.

      Or used a black membrane to keep the original brick colour the same as the house .Now it's painted that can never be removed .Plus I hoped he asked his neighbours because it looked like this was his neighbours extension wall

      @@btet19he could media blast the paint of the brick. But you are right about asking the neighbours. If he didn't get permission then it's criminal damage and I would be fuming if my neighbors drilled into my house!!

      Yes some paint works well to extend the natural life of the timber , but NOT timber preserve as that accelerates deterioration as recent data has shown..

    well done man, i would have painted the frame before putting it up, just as I still haven't learned that yet 😂 but it's like painting trellace if not and that is a nightmare, yeh painting masonry takes forever as you can't just roll it out, also painting decking takes forever also for the same reason. Looking good man

    That won’t last long the weight of the wood will pull those crap screws out of the wall. You need masonry fixings and an impact to get a good tight finish and help carry the weight. Another couple of batons would help

    Does painting the bricks stop them breathing? Is this likely to cause any problems In the future?

    • @Martinsdiy
      @Martinsdiy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I used sandtex paint which is meant for painting external brickwork and from what it says on the tin is permeable so allows the bricks to breathe.
