Look at any wood finish on any NEW building and it looks absolutely 💩 in 5 years. Ask any guy with a wooden decked yacht how often he has to varnish it..and yacht varnish is the best you can get because a deck is facing the sun every day of its life. If I'd done this job I would have made 2 separate, quick-release frames to varnish front and back every 5 years

Expensive stuff that Cedar £14-20 a piece..but does look very nice.

Yes I see where he is going wrong you don’t apply varnish you need to oil it once a year .
Try that and see how he gets on pal
You don’t have to varnish it especially if you look after it, Osmo oil would do just fine!
