Nonsense, little spotty, total nonsense.Back in the 1840s out of every 20 babies born 16 died.Mass famine all over Europe ....caused by a volcanic eruption in Malaysia.Mass emigration from Europe to the USA.Nowadays you youngsters dont know you are living.
Yes he DOES reunite with Estella! The final clauses of the last paragraph are: "...so, the evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw the shadow of no parting from her."
Fun fact: Charles Dickens actually wanted a different ending in which Pip and Estella never see each other again and in which they were both unhappy but a friend of the author convinced him to change it to a happier ending

I feel like i'm the only one who didn't like the 1946 version of this film, it's not bad, but I didn't imagine Miss Havisham how Miss Havisham was portrayed, Pip looking about 35 from the moment he went to London was a bit jarring, and I didn't like grown up Estella. I thought young Estella and Pip were very good though. Also the ending was way too happy happy tralala, imo
I haven't seen the 1946 version yet but the 2012 was pretty nice! It depicted most of the story accurately and Miss Havisham was played by one my favourite actresses
Indeed some of 2006 stuff is laughable especially when looking back. But if we'd ask people what they wanted they would've said "UGC in HD" so the key was experimenting/producing to get to now. Bear in mind, nestled in there we also did some very good/entertaining stuff. We hit our stride in 2008/09 & by 2010 were one of the better in space. We've focused further since 2011/12 & in 2013 we took off like a rocket-ship. But without those early clips, we wouldn't be here today, kicking ass.
I remember seeing this my freshman year and also reading it. Mrs Have a sham and the rich old geezer who got rich from being in australia and raising cattle such a good book.
Boy, I'm surprised you didn't discuss how Dickens rewrote the ending! It went from being a clunky ending with Estella's abusive husband dying and her remarrying to the rewritten ambiguous ending that's bittersweet.
Well it's more of a generic Dicken's piece of trivia, but Dicken's literally wrote to live. Each chapter of every book he ever wrote, was sold by chapter. Because it was expensive for print and books, it was cheaper. Each time there was a new chapter, people could choose to buy or not buy the next installment. It's part of the reason so many of his books' chapters have cliff hanger endings- to entice readers to buy the next part and continue reading.
As much as I liked Great Expectations, my love for it is not contest to my admiration and adoration for A Tale of Two Cities, which (I know I'm biased in saying this) I think certainly deserves more recognition than it often gets (except for the first line.... most overrated line of the book.... very significant and a wonderful opening, but other quotes from it deserve some praise and recognition too)
great expections quite inspiring and intresting more in 1946 than new version because its the story of that time the old directors knew what the story is
I have read the book and I haven't actually watched any adaptations of it in cinema or TV. But, as far as I remember, Pip does NOT reunite with Estella. Even when Dickens rewrote the ending.
can you make the following videos: top ten foreshadowing moments in movies and television top 10 most obvious plot holes/devices top ten worst plot twists
Great Expectations had been one of my favorite books. I like the way Dickens gave hope to Pip just for the Christmas food he gave to Abel; and of course, the twists and turns of the story. :)
l had it in my memory that the powerful scene where Fin drinks and announces below on the street that he was a huge success that Ethan Hawke yells out, "Here's to us!" and cheers the air, drinking. Guess its my dramatic ass, ad-libbing again! lol
Incorrect: He didn't sell them by chapter, but by groups of chapters. In Barnes and Nobles editions of his books, they note where each installment ends. There were several chapters in each installment that Dickens published.
I absolutely adore this book. It's like an older British version of the The Great Gatsby.

No, it means we have a sense of humor ;)
side note: the actors at 6:43 also starred in :" In Which We Serve". (1942)- one of the most beautiful and fascinateing WWII films :
I absolutely love this book. I've read it at least 100 times.

I agree the 1946 film and the book are charles dickens greatest hit and success. The adaptations from 1998 and 2012 are now rewritten.
As much as I liked Great Expectations, my love for it is not contest to my admiration and adoration for A Tale of Two Cities, which (I know I'm biased in saying this) I think certainly deserves more recognition than it often gets (except for the first line.... most overrated line of the book.... very significant and a wonderful opening, but other quotes from it deserve some praise and recognition too)
great expections quite inspiring and intresting more in 1946 than new version because its the story of that time the old directors knew what the story is
The 1998 was the story re-imagined in our day and age, the 2012 version is more accurate and has a great representation of Miss Havisham
