1. She didn't say being gay was a lifestyle choice. Engaging in sex, whether gay or straight, is a lifestyle choice. I have no problem saying that my having a girlfriend is a lifestyle choice. It's part of my lifestyle. Having a sexual orientation of any kind was never illegal in England. 2. RinJaganshi Being gay is not a lifestyle choice, but sleeping with someone (may it been a man or a woman) is a lifestyle choice. I know Gay people who chose not to sleep with anyone, in a way, that was his lifestyle and he chose not to sleep with anyone.
Oscar Wilde was jailed for paying to have young men sleep with him. In other words, young (sometimes 14-16 year olds) prostitution. And as prostitution was still very much illegal in Victorian England since it had been made illegal back in 1824 with the Vagrancy Act. He was committing a very real crime by participating. Wilde was a fantastic writer, one of my all-time favourites. But don't fucking pretend he was this "poor repressed homosexual", he was a decadent, hedonist, little shit, who took advantage of less fortunate young men, most of which testified against him and confessed that they did not in fact *want* to sleep with him. But were given no other choice as they would have starved otherwise, many had siblings they were trying to feed. Furthermore the entire time this was going on? He was a *married* man. Yeah, he was that dirty that he married a wealthy woman, had babies with her, then cheated on her with his diehard fan Robert Ross. He then left her to travel the world, and he went to Africa and slept with many many young men there. Then he met Alfred Douglas, and they both smashed each other, and Douglas is the one who got him into the prostitution scene. Eventually Douglas's father learned of their "more than friendly" relationship, he called Wilde a "sodomite" and Wilde attempted to sue him for libel. So Douglas's father then was forced to prove that Wilde actually *was* fucking other men in the butt. Which he did. Douglas proved it, sued him for everything he had, then a new case opened after it was discovered just how deep this rabbit hole ran, and was charged with public indecency, prostitution, and "living off immoral earnings" as it was heavily suspected he earned a portion of money that Douglas made off the prostitutes being introduced to him, so essentially this man was making tax returns from clapping the cheeks of young(sometimes unwilling) men. Pretty fucked up. Once again, I'd like to reiterate... Oscar Wilde was a phenomenal writer. And The Portrait Of Dorian Gray is one of my all time favourites. But Oscar as a person? Absolute scumbag. Zero sympathy for that fuckhead.

I remember being introduced to this story through the 1940s movie when I was about 8, I've always been fascinated by it, such a unique and original way of portraying how inner and outer beauty can contrast and compliment each other, and the story's theme of redemption. The painting scared the hell out of me, especially how it was accented by it being the only thing in color while the rest of the movie was black and white, getting to see it in all its disgusting glory. I liked, when I first read the story, that it does have Dorian's slow slide, but also the effect on how well-liked he is. He's admired for his money and youth, but also talked about because of it and his blackmail. Also, he blackmailed someone into deposing of Basil's body, and it's hinted he's tempted a lot of others into the decadent lifestyle. and his friend's wife in kinda fun to read.
Dope Top 10! The 45 version is awesome, it's on TCM a lot. The book is cool too, but Wilde's prose is so purple it takes some of the fright out of the story.
Everyone relax. Having certain sexual desires may not be a choice but acting on them is a choice. No, I am not speaking against homosexuality. I have no personal issue with it. It's a travesty that there are times and places were folks were expected to deny themselves of the most basic human needs like sex and love or be treated horribly. BUT don't get mad at this video for using "lifestyle choices".... "lifestyle choices" is the accurate way to say it. Cause lets be real here, people don't judge us, imprison us, or persecute us for how we feel...its for what we do.
So you mean to say that only your sexlife determines your whole lifestyle? Lifestyle has nothing to do with how you live, treat your body, how you interact with other people and how you lead your life, but who you fuck does? A lifestyle is how everything in your life looks and how you lead it. Not just who you have sex with. You choose the house you live in, you choose how to treat your body, you choose how to interact with other people, but you do not choose who you are attracted to. So stfu with that bullshit.
***** You misrepresent my point that entirely. I did not say anything that could be taken to mean that our sexlife is the only defining aspect of our lifestyle. I was saying that who we actually have sex with counts as a lifestyle choice. Because it is our choice to act on our desires or to deny them. I also indicated that its terrible when people mistreat others for making those choices. Again, at no point did I say that single choice is all we are. Not even close.
It is still stupid to call only your sexual orientation a lifestyle since it's only about one aspect of a much greater thing which makes up the entirety of one's lifestyle. Does anyone ever call heterosexuality a lifestyle choice? No, because it isn't one.
***** I think its misplaced anger to take issue with watchmojo for using the phrase. It's technically accurate and I don't think there is any way for them to phrase it that wont offend somebody somewhere. In my own life I have been insulted and even physically attacked for CHOOSING to pursue a relationship with someone of another ethnicity than myself. My feelings for her weren't a choice, but spending time, having sex and building a life together was absolutely a choice. It certainly didn't happen by itself. lol. It was a series of choices I have every right to make. Just as everyone else does. That kind of choice is a part of my lifestyle. It can reasonably be classified as a lifestyle choice. A lifestyle choice that, like homosexuality, would have resulted in even more severe persecution (even lynchings) some years ago. I say we should spend our time and energy fighting the persecutors of love not pestering the publications simply for relying on an accurate (though overly technical) phrase when approaching a subject that is, unfortunately, still a mine field to speak about even in our day and age.
"Due to his sexual orientation..." There's another, more accurate, way to phrase it. I understand what you're trying to say, but that phrasing suggests that being gay IS an active choice you make and dumber people than you and I, who already seek to quabble with gays are going to use that phrase as an excuse to send their gay sons to camps where they're taught that they can be cured. Which is complete nonsense and highly damaging to their sense of self and self esteem. Gay people who come from such an upbringing are the ones who end up committing suicide. So that phrase does way more harm even though it is technically correct in the way you described it. But most people don't understand the difference between your explanation of it and simply choosing to be gay. See what I mean?
Well, since I haven't seen the other movie versions nor read the book, I can only say I enjoy Ben's portrayal of Dorian's character, the dynamics of his emotions throughout his entire life.. From the innocence, then eagerness to be approved by Harry, then comes the cynicism and the sense of invincibility, then finally remorse when he ends up falling in love with Emily and realize that he can't drag Emily to hell with him… Although from what little that I know it's quite different from the actual story, I'd say he's done a great job in that movie~
I've seen both the 1945 version and the 2009 version. I love the 2009 version. I love Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray. The guy in the 1945 version wasn't my idea of beautiful. ha ha. I've read the novel too. Very good book!
Tanya LaRose You should have a look at the 1973 film 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. It's brilliant! The actor is well suited to the book's character, and he acts very well. It's on TH-cam.
another great angle to this story and to the character would be that he forces his ideals of amorality and imorality towards desire onto Dorian as he seeks to corrupt the innocence projected through dorian's youth.

+Junkiana yes. really. only cowards(you know sissies) try to disclaim their own choices and attendant responsibilities, by claiming others, society, genes, devil, whatever, made them do this or that action (with support of some unproven theory such as claim that homosexual acts are coded in genes) . be brave! choose what you want freely!

I've only watched the 2009 version of the film so can someone please explain why Lord Henry says, "Who can bare to look at you now?" Just curious! Thanks.
I know this is a year old but anyway. I always assumed it was because of all the scandal and hurt associated with him that his everlasting image was tarnished in people's minds despite him being physically beautiful forever. Meaning that essentially you are judged by your inner beauty in the end no matter how gorgeous you looked all your life.
As of right now, I am being required to read this novel for school and I have started it, but I am sort-of having a hard time understanding it. I was hoping that this TH-cam video would help me better understand the story line and it has, so I'm giving this TH-cam video a thumbs up.
+Holly Elizabeth-Rose Saywell No Thank you. I already read the book and a watched a movie version on TH-cam, on line for free, so I think I understand it now.
During the context of the time, and yes, even today, being gay is a lifestyle choice. The same as being heterosexual is. You don't have to engage in homosexuality. You may be inclined towards a member of the same gender but you still choose to engage in homosexual acts. The same way people inclined to those of a different gender choose to engage in heterosexual acts. So yes, all the politically correct people, complaining about watchmojo's choice of words. Wilde chose to engage in homosexual acts, in a time when it was not looked upon favourably, and whilst he had a family. So yes, it was lifestyle choice. Get over it.
Lord Henry was a total asshat to Dorain and his influences made him destructible. This is why I don’t like Victorian Landlords. They are corrupt and persuasive.

1945 movie is my favorite. The tv movie 1975 was pretty close to the book too.
Some people think having coloured skin is wrong. Or believing in different religions. Doesn't mean we should cater to bigotry.
The lady said "The PITCHER of Dorian Gray"
I love the Ben Barnes version most XD
Could you please do top ten notes on animal farm by George Orwell?
Well, since I haven't seen the other movie versions nor read the book, I can only say I enjoy Ben's portrayal of Dorian's character, the dynamics of his emotions throughout his entire life.. From the innocence, then eagerness to be approved by Harry, then comes the cynicism and the sense of invincibility, then finally remorse when he ends up falling in love with Emily and realize that he can't drag Emily to hell with him… Although from what little that I know it's quite different from the actual story, I'd say he's done a great job in that movie~
He is so often illustrated by actors with brown or even black hair, whereas in the novel he is mere blond, and "looking like an angel".

I've seen both the 1945 version and the 2009 version. I love the 2009 version. I love Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray. The guy in the 1945 version wasn't my idea of beautiful. ha ha. I've read the novel too. Very good book!
Which version is most true to the book?
he's also in penny Dreadful
1945 was really close but i really disliked 'dorians' acting
Tanya LaRose You should have a look at the 1973 film 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. It's brilliant! The actor is well suited to the book's character, and he acts very well. It's on TH-cam.
Hi WatchMojo...Could you please do top 10 on topic for most valuable or important 10 documents in the world?

We already know what's the best scene. The scene with the train of course!
What about the League of Extraordinary Gentleman?! That film was underrated!
The 1973 version scared me when I was a kid. Loved it though.
another great angle to this story and to the character would be that he forces his ideals of amorality and imorality towards desire onto Dorian as he seeks to corrupt the innocence projected through dorian's youth.
That's actually an AWESOME idea...
This was cool Mojo!
Lifestyle choices? Really?
+Junkiana
I came here to make exactly the same comment as you did.
This comment totally killed it for me.
+Junkiana It was a reference to the time during Oscar Wilde's life - at least that's what I got from what they "meant". IDK.. ?
+Junkiana yes. really. only cowards(you know sissies) try to disclaim their own
choices and attendant responsibilities, by claiming others, society,
genes, devil, whatever, made them do this or that action (with support
of some unproven theory such as claim that homosexual acts are coded in
genes) .
be brave! choose what you want freely!
lol

Si me puedes ayudar :D
Lucie Manette thank you! :]
@@Jiffzzy but wasn't the portrait destroyed with Dorian then why did Harry had it? I didn't understand
What's the song in the background?
Penny Dreadful made me read the book. I’m glad I did
This was a great movie
its odd they didn't even mention the character of Dorian gray appearing in the league of extraordinary gentlemen.

Oscar wilde was a genius!
I liked the character in the League of extraordinary gentlemen. I would have liked them to flesh out that character more in that movie.
As of right now, I am being required to read this novel for school and I have started it, but I am sort-of having a hard time understanding it. I was hoping that this TH-cam video would help me better understand the story line and it has, so I'm giving this TH-cam video a thumbs up.
I'm studying it for a university assignment, need a hand?
+Holly Elizabeth-Rose Saywell No Thank you. I already read the book and a watched a movie version on TH-cam, on line for free, so I think I understand it now.
Poor Dorian! I feel sorry for him!
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen......He was a great villain and he had an awesome heroine rival...Dracula's Bride.
Get over it.
sure he could have chosen to stay with his wife and went completely mad with longing for the affection he needed
Top ten songs associated with movies. (Stuck in the middle with you / Reservoir Dogs)
My first name is Dorian!
Lord Henry’s point of view was Awesome
Lord Henry was a total asshat to Dorain and his influences made him destructible. This is why I don’t like Victorian Landlords. They are corrupt and persuasive.
I've always thought it was rather sad that Wilde never published anything else. The 2nd novel syndrome just like Harper Lee.
