  • Great Expectations is a 1946 British film directed by David Lean, based on the 1861 novel by Charles Dickens and starring John Mills, Bernard Miles, Finlay Currie, Jean Simmons, Martita Hunt, Alec Guinness and Valerie Hobson. It won two Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography) and was nominated for three others (Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay).
The script, a slimmed-down version of Dickens' novel - inspired after David Lean witnessed an abridged 1939 stage version of the novel,[4] in which Guinness (responsible for the adaptation) had played Herbert Pocket, and Martita Hunt was Miss Havisham - was written by David Lean, Anthony Havelock-Allan, Cecil McGivern, Ronald Neame and Kay Walsh. Guinness and Hunt reprised their roles in the film, but the film was not a strict adaptation of the stage version. The film was produced by Ronald Neame and photographed by Guy Green.[5] It was the first of two films Lean directed based on Dickens' novels, the other being his 1948 adaptation of Oliver Twist.
The film is now regarded as one of Lean's best; in 1999, on the British Film Institute's Top 100 British films list, Great Expectations was named the 5th greatest British film of all time.
    Cast :
John Mills as Pip as an adult
Anthony Wager as Pip as a boy
Valerie Hobson as Estella as an adult, and as Molly
Jean Simmons as Estella as a girl. (Simmons later played Miss Havisham in the 1989 miniseries)
    Martita Hunt as Miss Havisham
    Finlay Currie as Abel Magwitch
Francis L. Sullivan as Mr. Jaggers
    Bernard Miles as Joe Gargery
Alec Guinness as Herbert Pocket as an adult
John Forrest as Herbert Pocket as a boy
Freda Jackson as Mrs. Joe Gargery
    Eileen Erskine as Biddy
    Ivor Barnard as Mr. Wemmick
    Torin Thatcher as Bentley Drummle
    O. B. Clarence as the Aged Parent
    Hay Petrie as Uncle Pumblechook
    Everley Gregg as Sarah Pocket

Joe Gargery is the truest person that ever was. I know he's only a character in a story but I wish I had a friend like Joe Gargery in my life. He never ceased to love Pip even when Pip's attitude towards him changed. He nursed Pip back to health when he was sick and delirious. He was more like a father/best friend to Pip than a brother-in-law. He made me cry when I read that book as a school girl. He made me cry as an adult now watching this. 😭

I don't contest this, but read Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Another great book about character and life in general, friendship, unconditional love, etc. Hugo wanted to write a book to be compared with Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Altgough the books are different in genre and in timeframe, both are excellent.

At 1:30:16, Mr. Wemmick says "I want to offer an apology" about the Aged's idiosyncracy. But the original quote in the book is "I won't offer an apology... for he isn’t capable of many pleasures-are you, Aged P.?" (chapter 37)

Francis Sullivan is nearly a perfect Jaggers, physically and in his voice, way of speaking, gestures. The only noticeable difference is that Dickens' Jaggers is sterner, colder. You can see Francis Sullivan dropping by the pub most nights, to unwind after a long day. Not the Jaggers in the original. But Francis Sullivan is great in this role.

The ending is actually wrong in this movie... The last lines are "As the morning mists had been risen long ago, the evening mists were rising now; and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her." This means that it was just the imagination of Pip that Estella has come again.. When the evening mists were rising, Pip did not see any shadow of Estella and realized that it was nothing but his imagination. Estella had already died along with her husband Bentley Drummle.. at the end Pip walked along the road as he remains lonely... All his going to London and getting educated for Estella just not to be common labouring boy had been in vain... Great Expectations is the story of Pip's coming of age... that is why, this is considered to be one of the most gloomy and sad novels ever written! 🥺💔
