    The year is 2022. My PC is reaching its 8 year anniversary and here I am considering overclocking my i7 4770k for the first time. Couldn't have found a better video.

      Amazing this video is still useful after all this time. I am upgrading a side build from i5 4590 to i7 4790 and came across this video just looking around for videos on lga 1150. Don't know but I may go with the best unlocked i can find for the machine. I am just curious how much I can actually feel with the cpu upgrade. I'm not expecting much but overclocking may help it be felt a lil more.

But I figure that when it does eventually start lagging behind I can come back to this great video and squeeze some more performance out of it rather than having to invest in a new CPU, motherboard, and memory.

    At 17:25 Cpu strap is mentioned, It's worth noting as it's good tool for allowing you to overclock CPU's with fixed multipliers, Without the worry of instability due to over components that don't respond well to changes to the base speed.

  • @jbg43
    @jbg43 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I must say - you are excellent. Just built a 4790 pc and finally got almost all components working (except M.2 ssd which apparently doesn't actually work with ASUS Maximus 7). I really like my Intel/ASUS/Corsair components and recommend them. I am running 30C-45C at 4.4G and really see no need to go higher, tho I like to know my options. This video tells me all I can comprehend and has filled in a big info gap between sketchy ASUS documentation and "what's possible". I look forward to tweaking for Hz as I become more comfortable with the technology.

    After sifting through a bunch of less than helpful videos on overclocking, I found this gem. You did an awesome job of producing a highly informative video with great production quality, that wasn't longer than it needed to be. Thanks so much for your efforts!
    BTW, I've got my i7 4790k on an Asus Maximus VII Hero doing 4.8 GH3 at 1.215 V, with each of the cores averaging about 60C, and RAM at 1600 MHz - and this is stable running Aida64 for almost 6 hours! I'm almost wondering if I'm missing something - seems too good to be true.

      @joshnlevinson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to provide an update, although the configuration I mentioned above was stable in most cases (including in benchmarks), I kept getting crashes when playing Far Cry 4. So I ended up raising the Vcore to 1.24 V, resulting in the core temps averaging anywhere from the mid to high 60s (depending on the core), with max core temps of about 81C (but with typical temps at any given moment being in the 60s and 70s, and the temps rarely going higher than about 77C). So the temps are a bit higher than I'd like, but from what I gather, anything below 85C is considered relatively safe (especially when the average/typical temps are much lower). I'm definitely pushing the system to its limits, but hey... I've got it stable at 4.8 GHz with air cooling!
      In any case, things seem to be more stable now (i.e. no more crashes in FC4), but I'm still waiting for more time to pass before coming to a firm conclusion on that.

    I'll outdo this video with this quote:
    "Now, I’ll share a secret imparted by the folks at ASUS who gave several reviewers some tips on overclocking the retail stepping Haswell chips: Set Vcore to 1.20 V. Set all cores to 46x (which would be a 4.6 GHz overclock), save & reboot. If the system boots past the UEFI and either begins to load or, ideally, makes it into the OS and is stable, you have a 50th percentile or greater chip on the Haswell overclocking-ability bell curve. If it won’t at least boot there and make it into the UEFI, you probably have less than a 50th percentile chip. You can expect chips in the lower 50th percentile to top out in the 4.4-4.5 GHz range at 1.25 V."

      Here is a extra tip if you like Asus.
      Very pleased with the Asus 6 Formula.
      If you use a closed water cooling system (H100 etc) connected its motor to CPU as normal, but connect its fans to the Chassi fan connectors. This is because you can control these with Asus AI suit 3 that comes with the board.
      OCing in AI suit 3 is a one click thing and since your fans are connected to the CH1 and 2 connectors you can set them to much lower speed for a silent desktop only experience.
      Of course bios OC will give better overall results, but currently my AI suit stats are 4400mhz at 1,248volt and 2400mhz ram at 1,65volt. If you choose to bios OC you can still use the fan control features of AI suit 3.

      Its a 4 pin fan connector on a motherboard where you can connect a 3 or 4 pin fan to which will power the fan.
      Formula has 3 CH connectors which can be control the fan speeds via software, but also has 3 more optional fan connectors and 2 cpu fan connectors.
      Some of these 4 pin connectors also have 2 pin connector next to them and those are for powering the the extra lights on some fans that come with those.

    • @lucky88shp
      @lucky88shp 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It basically like Lobos222 said, a fan connector than can accept 3 or 4-pin fans. Note, these connectors are there to connect the additional case/tower fans. Also, not that case fans can have a molex connector too which can be connected directly to the PSU(Power Supply Unit). The main benefit of using the chassis fan connectors is that they allow you to control the speed of the fans in your case...

    The year is 2024, I am still limping along this god-like CPU known as the i7-4770k. She's got an NZXT Kraken water cooler keeping her cold, and she clocks high. Paired up with a 1660 Super, somehow my PC is still usable today in most modern applications. Its not amazing, but its usable. 10 years later & this is still totally relevant to me.

    how come a i5 2500k and i7 2600k are so much better overclockers?

    • @veruslupus
      @veruslupus 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      thermal limits are the usual limit on overclocking and sandybridge aka 2500 2600 are soldered, the die and ihs. whereas ivybridge and haswell use epoxy based glue to hold the ihs on, creating a much poorer connection thus poor heat transfer die to ihs, this leading to less effective cooling and lower clocking. However each step up ivy bridge and haswell has an increase in performance clock for clock, so a 4.8ghz sandybridge loses to 4.8 ivy and so on.

    • @dylanhartz8473
      @dylanhartz8473 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      michael h many haswell OC'ers use a razor blade to split the ihs and scrape the glue off and put a higher end thermal paste on the cpu die, i have even seen success in the use of a thin layer of thermal paste on the die, then a thin sheet of copper, then another layer of thermal paste (very thin) then the heat spreader

    • @dangerboy551
      @dangerboy551 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blank ᅚ If you have a better cooling, you will reach better results. If you have a stock cooler, try undervolting instead of overclocking.
      It reduces power dissipation, increases your CPU lifespan and it could possibly even increase performance when under heavy loads since your CPU won't get as hot as it would normally. I currently run 1.024V (under 0.940V I couldn't boot my pc anymore) @ stock speed with a stock fan. There are no drawbacks if you manage to make it run stable.

    • @SauceApple51
      @SauceApple51 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      dangerboy551 I want to see some actual benchmarks before I do something like that. Know any websites or sources of information that provide details?

    • @nigahiga6400
      @nigahiga6400 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blank ᅚ Yes. Stock coolers are only intended for the CPUs stock speeds, and some struggle with just that. There's no point to overclocking if it results in the CPU throttling from heat and killing performance. At the very least, an aftermarket cooler will produce less noise than a stock cooler.

      In order to overclock a GPU you'll want to grab a GPU OCing program such as MSI's Afterburner or EVGA's Precision. I don't believe that there is a way to overclock a GPU from the BIOS.

      Good build overall, would recommend downgrading the CPU to something like an i3 4130 or 6300, but a better option would be upgrading your GPU to something like a 760-770 and keeping the CPU. You don't need 2133 mhz on the memory either, I run 1600 mhz and it is great for gaming, but if you REALLY need it go for the 1866. Power supply is probably fine, but I'd go for something like a 750w Corsair HX series on sale (this is what I run and it is great). Also, get a Good CPU cooler (Corsair h100i, Cooler Master Glacier 240L (better performance same price) both of these options can get kinda loud, get something like a Noctua NH-D15 for literally NO noise.

    • @TheLukey21

      Mike Taylor well the whole point of the i5 4670k is that in the future I will buy another r9 270x and crossfire them but my other option is the fx 8350

    • @miketaylor5390
      @miketaylor5390 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that's a good idea, but mind the crossfire scaling issues that AMD is known for, I'd go with something like a 760. I'd go for the 4670k (I own it, good processor).

    • @TheLukey21
      @TheLukey21 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Taylor well I don't plan on any upgrading for a good 2 to 3 years and at the moment I'm using the home PC which has an integrated and radeon 3000 (not the HD one) and I play at 1280x1024 if I'm lucky at 40fps average on the lowest settings on 99.9% of games and that uses an AMD athlon at 2.9ghz dual core with 4gb of ram and a 180w PSU so this will be an absolute monster compared to what I play at the moment.

    Overclocking these days only means adjusting a frequency or multiplier setting in the bios. People act as if they're genius doing that. Back in the 70ies people where overclocking by soldering caps on their motherboard and changing resistors. It looks oh so interesting (sarcasm intended) all those windowed computer cases and multimeters hooked up to prefab measurement points. But if you compare all the effort the designers of the hardware spend to make a component actually work, to what the "overclockers" these days do, it's to laugh about.

At this point, I was scared I was gonna damage my new CPU so I settled with the OC Genie feature in MSI's boards. Only clocks it to 4.0Ghz, but it was stable. I guess I'm just really, really unlucky. It was the same situation with my last CPU aswell. :(

    • @BenignStatue71
      @BenignStatue71 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Djshrimper I own one as well (H80i), but my FX-9370 can't (couldn't) run at the AMD 4.7GHz boost without overheating at 65-70C (It should be noted though that I have now swapped out one of their fans for my case fans, it's faster and quieter, and my CPU has started to lower on temperature now; I may try again, maybe reach the 5.1GHz I have seen achieved, even if only for a single boot). I would recommend buying an open liquid cooling to someone anyway, the lead for the H80i is too short, and it is 120mm while a fair amount of cases use 140mm top sockets, if you are lucky you have a hybrid 140mm/120mm. I'll need to get my OS off my current HDD though because it is dieing (I can hear it making grinding noises, and it's a 5.5 in the windows experience index. It's S.M.A.R.T says it's fine though)

      So true man...I said this on another post, but my 4670k needs 1.3v just for 4.4ghz. 4.6 with 1.2 is absolutely insane! The highest I ever went was 4.5 and that was just while I was benchmarking. 1.35v is pretty damn high. What do you keep your chip at? Just curious.

      Ivan Šeremet I have to say sry m8, you can't overclock a non K processor - i.e. its not an unlocked CPU

      MrAndyjk15 What?

    • @MrAndyjk15
      @MrAndyjk15 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ivan Šeremet Yeh sry, linus even said it in the video (can't remember where tho) you can only overclock K processors as the are 'unlocked' - meaning they allow for the figures that represent the Ghz - speed of the cpu, to be altered. You could try and overclock as i have heard that some 'locked' cpus have been overclocked, tho only by 0.5 ish, and won't go any higher. If you want you can try to get a smidgen more performance, but there's a 98% chance that it won't allow you to do anything.

      Ivan Šeremet On the other hand you can overclock your graphics card and ram which will give you a boost and the cpu won't limit them.

    Good cpu's but poorly manufactured all run hotter than they should.Due to them using cheap thermal paste to attach the back plate of the cpu.Earlier intel chips was soldered together now they use cheap ass paste and is why they all run hot compared to older intel chips.
    This can easily be fixed by "carefully" removing the back plate off the cpu.Replacing really shitty thermal paste with some good.Boom it runs up to 40% cooler now.Making most of the aftermarket cooling not needed.
    Intel cpu's are awesome but its a shame they are going the cheap route producing them.

    2020, My Maximus Impact just died, I, therefore, got an MSI Z97 PC Mate, and still the i5 4670k is still kicking as the day I got it!

    Awesome video, I've always wondered about how over clocking works in detail. I thought it was pretty funny that I didn't even notice the package of Twinkies on the wall in the back ground until 6:34 x) haha

    Nice work LinusTechTips. Great way for people new to OC to understand. I wish you went into the tools you used to show what the max temps should be with the Apps you used. Also don't use the inbuilt Asus Suit AI as the Max temps are incorrect. I had a 4.6 OC reporting under 80c yet when using other tools it well almost hitting 88-89c .. almost 90!
